AGUIYI INSPECTS EVACUATION OF 14-YEAR-OLD DUMPSITE IN OBOSI

The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Clem Aguiyi Esq, has inspected the ongoing evacuation of a refuse dumpsite that had existed for about fourteen years at Owelle Aja, Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area.

The evacuation exercise, carried out by the Idemili North Local Government Council under the leadership of the Mayor, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka, involved the deployment of an excavator and four tipper trucks to clear the massive accumulation of solid waste that had blocked MC King Lane and posed serious environmental and health hazards to residents.

Speaking during the inspection, Dr Clem Aguiyi Esq commended the Idemili North Local Government Chairman for responding promptly to the environmental challenge, describing the exercise as a demonstration of the Soludo administration's commitment to ensuring a cleaner, healthier and more livable Anambra State.

The Commissioner urged residents to support government efforts by maintaining proper sanitation, avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal and patronising only accredited waste management contractors for refuse collection. He warned that environmental offenders would be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the state.

Earlier, the Mayor of Idemili North Local Government Area, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka, disclosed that six major illegal dumpsites had been identified in Owelle Aja for evacuation. He explained that the exercise was previously delayed by the absence of access roads as well as low-hanging electricity poles and overhead cables, but noted that collaboration with landlords made the operation possible.

Hon. Nkwoka assured residents that all identified dumpsites would be cleared while plans were underway to introduce a sustainable waste disposal system to prevent the re-emergence of illegal refuse dumps.

He also warned that anyone caught dumping refuse indiscriminately would face appropriate sanctions, including bearing the cost of evacuating the waste or possible prosecution.

Residents of the area expressed gratitude to the Anambra State Government and the Idemili North Local Government Council for restoring cleanliness and accessibility to the community. They appealed for continuous monitoring to ensure the dumpsite does not return.

You Must Get Ministry Approval Before Cutting Any Tree, Anambra Govt Warns Residents

AWKA — The Anambra State Government has directed residents to secure permission from the Ministry of Environment before cutting down any tree across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, Esq., gave the directive during a radio programme on ABS 88.5 FM in Awka. He warned that anyone who fells trees without approval will face the full weight of the state’s environmental laws.

Dr. Aguiyi said the directive aligns with Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s agenda to tackle climate change and build a more livable and sustainable Anambra.

He expressed concern over the rising rate of indiscriminate tree felling, which he described as a key driver of climate change and environmental degradation in the state.

To address flooding and erosion, the Commissioner urged households and communities to create green areas and dig catchment pits to control stormwater runoff during the rainy season.

He added that tree planting and afforestation remain central to conserving biodiversity and protecting forests and game reserves for future generations.

According to him, the Soludo administration has planted more than 2 million trees since assuming office, a move he described as a major step toward ecosystem restoration.

Dr. Aguiyi called on Ndi Anambra to take ownership of their environment by protecting existing trees and supporting government conservation policies.

"Our environment is our collective responsibility. We must protect nature so that nature will not turn against us," he stated.

ANAMBRA STATE COMMISSIONER FOR ENVIRONMENT ORDERS IMMEDIATE SEALING OF ILLEGAL DUMPSITE DURING ASSESSMENT OF ABAGANA GULLY EROSION

The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, Esq., has ordered the immediate sealing of an illegal dumpsite at Amaenye Ene, Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area, following an on-the-spot assessment of a high-magnitude gully erosion site in the area.

The assessment, conducted alongside the Managing Director of the Anambra State Watershed, Erosion and Climate Change Agency (ANSWECCA), Engr. Ifeanyi Nwasinoke, and the Head of the Ecology Department of the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Ijeoma Onyekwelu, revealed an expanding gully exceeding 10 metres in depth, with extensive damage to adjoining drainage infrastructure.

Expressing concern over the situation, Dr. Clem Aguiyi observed that while the fragile terrain contributed to the erosion, indiscriminate human activities had aggravated the menace. He described the operation of a dumpsite at the location as illegal, noting that indiscriminate waste disposal had obstructed drainage channels, accelerated erosion, and posed serious environmental and public health risks.

The Commissioner immediately ordered the closure of the dumpsite and summoned its operator to explain why the facility was established contrary to the State's waste management framework. He noted that the State Government has designated waste disposal facilities across the various zones for accessibility and proper environmental management, questioning the rationale behind operating an unauthorized dumpsite that not only defaced the environment but also occupied part of a major road and worsened the erosion.

Addressing residents, Dr. Clem Aguiyi stressed that environmental negligence transforms manageable challenges into major ecological disasters. He urged communities to take ownership of their environment by reporting erosion at its early stages, discouraging indiscriminate waste disposal, and protecting drainage channels from encroachment.

The Commissioner reiterated that environmental protection remains a key priority under the Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR's fifth pillar of development; Environment and Urban Regeneration, assuring residents that the State Government would continue to implement proactive measures to address erosion while strengthening environmental awareness and enforcement.

Speaking on behalf of the community, the Vice President-General - Comrade Atu Okechukwu acknowledged that inadequate drainage design and human activities contributed to the erosion and appealed for sustained government intervention to safeguard lives and property.

ANAMBRA STATE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT SIGNS MoU WITH NIGERIA FOREST SECURITY SERVICE TO STRENGTHEN FOREST PROTECTION

The Anambra State Ministry of Environment has taken a significant step towards strengthening forest conservation and environmental security with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS).

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the office of the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, Esq., in the presence of the State Commandant of the Nigeria Forest Security Service, Mazi Destiny E. Jonas, and the Head of the Forestry Department, Mrs. Achugamonye Onyinye, alongside other officials.

The partnership establishes a framework for collaboration in protecting Anambra State's forest resources through joint forest patrols, intelligence gathering, enforcement of forestry laws, prevention of illegal logging and encroachment, wildfire prevention, community engagement, and capacity building.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Dr. Clem Aguiyi described the agreement as a strategic milestone in advancing Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR's vision of building a clean, green, secure, and environmentally sustainable Anambra State. He emphasized that safeguarding the State's forests is critical to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

The State Commandant of the Nigeria Forest Security Service, Mazi Destiny E. Jonas, reaffirmed the Service's commitment to working closely with the Ministry to protect forest reserves and combat environmental crimes.

The MoU marks a renewed commitment by both institutions to strengthen inter-agency cooperation in preserving Anambra State's natural heritage for present and future generations.

ANAMBRA STATE COMMISSIONER FOR ENVIRONMENT ASSESSES ACTIVE EROSION SITE IN OKPUNO, CALLS FOR COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP ON ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, Esq., has conducted an on-the-spot assessment of an active erosion site in Ezinifite Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area, following concerns over the growing threat to lives, residential buildings, and public infrastructure.

The inspection was facilitated by the Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area Hon. Chinedu Okafor and the Parish Priest of St. Raphael Catholic Church, Okpuno, Rev. Fr. George Anthony, whose church is among the facilities threatened by the advancing gully erosion.

During the assessment, the community leaders explained that the church and residents had earlier constructed drainage channels in an effort to control the erosion before it deteriorated. However, the Commissioner observed that the drainage system terminated abruptly without a proper discharge outlet, resulting in severe scouring that developed into a deep and expanding gully.

Dr. Clem Aguiyi emphasized the need for communities to engage the Ministry of Environment before embarking on drainage and other infrastructure projects requiring Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). He reiterated the State Government's Environmental Emergency agenda, urging residents to take ownership of their environment through responsible environmental practices.

The Commissioner also encouraged the Parish Priest to use the church's platform to promote environmental awareness and sustainability, noting that faith-based institutions have a critical role in shaping positive environmental attitudes. He assured the community that the State Government would carefully review the situation and take appropriate steps toward addressing the erosion challenge.

The Chairman of Awka South Local Government acknowledged that human activities had contributed to the erosion, stressing that environmental enforcement would be strengthened in line with the Ministry's vision for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Anambra.

WE WILL SANITIZE ALL ABATTOIRS IN ANAMBRA — AGUIYI

The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sanitizing all abattoirs across the state to safeguard public health and ensure a cleaner environment.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, Esq., made this known during an unscheduled inspection of the Kwata Abattoir in Awka South Local Government Area ahead of the statewide environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, July 4, 2026.
Accompanied by officers of the Ocha Brigade and Environmental Health Officers from the Ministry of Environment, the Commissioner expressed dissatisfaction over the deplorable sanitary conditions at the facility, including indiscriminate disposal of animal waste, poor waste management, offensive odours, and blocked drainage channels.
Dr. Aguiyi described the situation as unacceptable for a facility that processes meat for public consumption, warning that the government would not tolerate practices that threaten public health and the environment.
He directed the operators to immediately improve sanitation at the abattoir, warning that failure to comply with environmental standards would leave the government with no option but to seal the facility and commence plans to redesign and upgrade it into a modern, hygienic slaughterhouse.
The Commissioner also urged the operators to participate fully in the July 4 statewide environmental sanitation exercise, noting that the current sensitisation campaign would soon give way to strict enforcement across the state.
Responding on behalf of the abattoir management, the Vice Chairman acknowledged the poor state of the facility and appreciated the Commissioner's visit. He assured the Ministry that members had been mobilised for the sanitation exercise and pledged to improve hygiene and environmental standards within the abattoir.
Dr. Aguiyi reiterated the commitment of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, to building a clean, green, healthy, and livable Anambra State, stressing that maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility and that the government will continue to enforce environmental laws without compromise.
