‎Police Recover Fabricated Beretta Pistol, Live Ammunition in Nnewi

‎Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the Nnewi Central Police Station have recovered a fabricated Beretta pistol and one live round of ammunition during a routine patrol in Nnewi South Local Government Area.
‎
‎The recovery was made on the morning of Sept. 3, along Ukpor Road, Umudim, Nnewi, when the police operatives reportedly spotted two suspected motorcycle snatchers riding on a motorcycle.
‎
‎According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the operatives immediately pursued the suspects, who, in an attempt to escape, abandoned a bag that fell from their possession.
‎
‎SP Ikenga said the police searched the abandoned bag and discovered the fabricated Beretta pistol and one live round of ammunition. He added that efforts were ongoing to locate and arrest the fleeing suspects and ensure that they were brought to justice.

‎The command assured Ndi Anambra of its continued commitment to preventing crime and combating all forms of criminality across the state.

Onyekesi seeks stronger legislative support for women,children,vulnerable persons

‎The Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, has called for stronger collaboration between the ministry and the State House of Assembly to deepen government interventions for women, children and vulnerable persons across the state. Hon. Onyekesi made the call when the House of Assembly Committee on Women Affairs, led by its Chairman, Hon. Mimi Azikiwe, paid a working visit to the ministry at Women Development Center Awka on Sept.1

‎The vommissioner said the ministry required the continued support of the legislature, particularly through effective legislation, oversight and advocacy, to strengthen programmes designed to empower women, protect children and improve the welfare of vulnerable members of society. She described the visit as an important opportunity for both arms of government to exchange ideas, identify areas of challenge and develop practical strategies for improving service delivery.

‎According to her, the ministry could achieve greater impact when there was sustained synergy between the executive and legislative arms, adding that issues affecting women, children and vulnerable persons required collective responsibility and coordinated action. The commissioner assured the lawmakers of the ministry’s readiness to work closely with the committee, stressing that the partnership would help strengthen existing programmes and create new opportunities for the people of Anambra State.

‎Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Mimi Azikiwe, said the lawmakers were at the ministry to familiarise themselves with its activities, identify areas of challenge and explore ways the house could support the commissioner in delivering on her mandate. Hon. Azikiwe said there were numerous areas where the legislature and ministry could work together, stressing that the committee was interested in finding practical solutions to challenges confronting the sector.

‎Also speaking, Hon. Jude Akpua commended the commissioner for her efforts in advancing the welfare and empowerment of women and other vulnerable groups. He said the visit was intended to strengthen the relationship between the House and the ministry, noting that regular engagement would enable the lawmakers to better understand the challenges on the ground and provide appropriate legislative support.

Nwora Promises Federal Intervention to Tackle Erosion Menace in Onitsha North/South

The Mayor of Onitsha North and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) House of Representatives candidate for Onitsha North/Onitsha South Federal Constituency, Hon. Nweze Tony Nwora, has pledged to pursue urgent Federal Government intervention to address the growing erosion menace threatening several communities across the constituency.

Nwora, who made the commitment while outlining his agenda for the constituency, said erosion had become one of the critical environmental challenges confronting the people, with several communities witnessing the destruction of land, buildings, roads and other infrastructure.

He identified a number of erosion-prone areas, including the erosion site at Nkisi Aroli, Inland Town; Omagba Phase 2, behind Hello Gas Filling Station; Mgbemene Street by Vinee Oil, beside the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway between Green Seeds Market and MCC, as well as areas within the Nigeria Army Cantonment, Onitsha, particularly around Mammy Market and Block 17 in Ward 9, Onitsha North Local Government Area.

According to him, other areas affected by erosion include Trans-Nkisi, Akpaka and Federal Housing/Odonjisi in Ward 12, Onitsha North LGA, among other locations across the constituency.

Nwora expressed concern that the erosion sites were expanding rapidly, threatening homes, businesses, roads, livelihoods and human lives, stressing that the situation could no longer be ignored.

He said that if elected to the National Assembly, he would bring the issue before the Federal Government through a Motion of Urgent National Importance on the floor of the National Assembly and sustain legislative engagement and advocacy until concrete intervention was secured.

The APGA candidate further pledged to work towards attracting relevant Federal Government agencies and intervention programmes, including the Federal Ministry of Environment, Ecological Project Office and other agencies responsible for erosion control and watershed management, to the affected communities.

He described erosion as more than an environmental challenge, saying that it had become an existential threat to communities in the constituency.

“Erosion is not merely an environmental issue. It is an existential threat to our communities,” Nwora stated, stressing the need for deliberate legislative action to protect lives, properties and the future of the people.

He said that the effective representation should go beyond electoral campaigns, noting that a representative must understand the problems confronting the people, present such challenges before the appropriate authorities and follow through until solutions were delivered.

Nwora urged the people of Onitsha North and Onitsha South Federal Constituency to support his aspiration to represent them in the House of Representatives, promising to use the position to attract federal attention, intervention and resources to the constituency.

He described his political aspiration as a commitment to grassroots representation and urged voters to support the APGA candidate in the January 16, 2027 House of Representatives election.

“The Game Changer is here,” Nwora declared.

CP Oji Ama Advocates Culture-Based Approach to People-Centred Policing

‎The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has called for greater understanding and respect for the culture, traditions and values of the people as a key requirement for effective and people-oriented policing.

‎CP Oji Ama made the call on Sept. 3, when he received the Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Dr. Law Mefor, and the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Mr. Udoji Amedu, during their courtesy visit to the Command Headquarters in Awka.
‎
‎The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists. According to the CP, policing should not be limited to enforcing laws, stressing that a sound knowledge of the cultural heritage, traditions, values and peculiarities of the people would enable the police to serve and protect them more effectively.

‎He also advocated stronger and sustained cooperation among the Police, relevant government ministries, traditional institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders. Such collaboration, he said, would help build public confidence, improve community engagement and promote lasting peace and security across Anambra State.

‎The CP further reaffirmed the command’s commitment to its open-door policy and strategic partnerships aimed at deepening trust, cooperation and understanding between the Police and residents of the state.

Idemili South Mayor Elect, Others Receive Certificates of Return from ANSIEC

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has presented Certificates of Return to newly elected mayors, deputy mayors and councillors in the 21 Local Government Areas of the state.

The presentation followed the Aug. 29 local government elections, with the Idemili South Mayor Elect, Hon. Oluchukwu Ilogbenu, and other elected officials receiving their certificates at a ceremony in Awka on Sept. 1.

According to results announced by ANSIEC, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won all 21 chairmanship seats and 364 councillorship positions in the election.

The certificates were presented by the ANSIEC Chairman, Mrs Chinelo Genevieve Osakwe.

Osakwe commended the conduct of the election and assured that the commission would continue to improve the electoral process in subsequent elections.

She urged the newly elected officials to prioritise development, accountability and good governance in their respective local government areas.

The ceremony was attended by election observers, security agencies and media representatives.

Speaking after receiving his certificate, Ilogbenu thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo for what he described as the leadership that facilitated the conduct of the election across the state.

He described the Certificate of Return as a confirmation of the mandate entrusted to him by the people of Idemili South.

“Beyond being a formal document, the Certificate of Return represents the mandate, confidence and trust that the good people of Idemili South Local Government Area have placed in us to serve them,” he said.

Ilogbenu also commended ANSIEC for conducting the election and formally validating its outcome.

He thanked the people of Idemili South for their support, describing the mandate as a responsibility he would discharge with humility and commitment to the development of the area.

“As we prepare to begin this new chapter, our focus remains to continue and consolidate upon the progress already made in Idemili South,” IIogbenu said.

‎The foundation stone of St. Nicholas Anglican Church, Oduke, in the Ugwuagba Archdeaconry, has been laid and dedicated, marking a significant milestone in the church’s development and the strengthening of Christian worship in the community.

‎The foundation-laying ceremony was officiated by the Chief Shepherd of the Diocese, Rt. Rev. Owen Chiedozie Nwokolo, who led clergy, members of the church, traditional rulers, stakeholders and faithful in the historic ceremony.
‎
‎Addressing the congregation, the Bishop urged members to remain committed to the work of God and challenged them to “attempt great things for God.” He called on the church community to approach the project with faith, dedication and determination, emphasising the importance of collective effort in advancing the work of God and establishing a lasting legacy for future generations.

‎The Diocesan also prayed for divine favour, prosperity and success upon the project, asking God to bless the works of the hands of those contributing to the development of the church. ASUWAHC Repairs Faulty Water Points, Tackles Leakages in Onitsha

‎The Anambra State Urban Water Assets Holding Corporation (ASUWAHC), Onitsha Zone, has embarked on a major maintenance exercise to restore faulty public water fetching points and address leakages and structural defects across the zone.
‎
‎The exercise, which was conducted on Sept. 2, was led by the Onitsha Zonal Head, Engr. Francis Udoh, alongside the zone’s technical team, under the supervision of the Officer-in-Charge of ASUWAHC, Mrs. Emmanuella Okafor.
‎
‎The maintenance team visited several public water fetching points and their surrounding areas, carrying out on-the-spot assessments to identify faults affecting the functionality of the facilities.
‎
‎During the exercise, the team identified and repaired several defects, including leaking water points and structural faults. The intervention was aimed at restoring the affected facilities, reducing water wastage and ensuring continued access to functional public water points for residents. According to the corporation, the exercise forms part of its ongoing efforts to protect and sustain existing water infrastructure through regular inspection, preventive maintenance and prompt repairs.

‎The initiative is also in line with the Anambra State Government’s broader water sector reforms under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, which focus on rehabilitating critical water infrastructure, improving service delivery and ensuring that public water facilities remain functional and accessible.
‎
‎Speaking during the exercise, Engr. Udoh appealed to Community Watch Monitors and residents to protect the water facilities against vandalism, misuse and deliberate damage. He urged members of the public to promptly report leaking pipes, damaged fittings, vandalised facilities and other faults to the ASUWAHC Onitsha Zonal Office to enable the Corporation to intervene before such defects worsen.

‎Udoh explained that early reporting of faults would facilitate quicker repairs, reduce water losses and help keep the facilities operational for the benefit of the communities. He stressed that while regular maintenance was essential to extending the lifespan of the facilities, responsible use and community vigilance were equally important.
‎
‎The Zonal Head therefore encouraged residents to treat the public water fetching points as community assets and work with the corporation to protect them. The maintenance exercise underscores ASUWAHC’s preventive approach to water infrastructure management, with emphasis on early detection of faults, timely repairs and stronger community participation in sustaining public water facilities.

ANSACA Moves to Revive Grassroots HIV Response, Establishes 1,693 Ward Brigaders

The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has commenced steps to revitalise the HIV response at the grassroots through stronger Local Action Committee on AIDS (LACA) structures and closer coordination with the HIV/AIDS Awareness Brigade (HAB) across the State’s 21 Local Government Areas(LGA).

The Executive Director/Project Manager of ANSACA, Dr. Nkem Okeke, disclosed this on Sept. 2 in Awka during a strategic engagement with LACA Managers and HAB Coordinators.

A major outcome of the meeting was the planned establishment of a 1,693 member Ward HIV/AIDS Brigade, aimed at taking HIV awareness, prevention, testing, referrals and linkage to care closer to communities across Anambra.

Okeke said the initiative would strengthen the connection between State, LGA, ward and community level structures while improving coordination between LACA and HAB.

He described LACA as an important platform for coordinating HIV interventions at the local government level, stressing the need to revitalise the structures to deliver measurable results.

“Our goal is to revive LACA and build a functional synergy between LACA and HAB. We want a coordinated structure from the state to the LGA, wards and communities, with people who understand their responsibilities and can deliver measurable results,” he said.

The ANSACA boss said the agency would increasingly assess grassroots structures by their performance and impact rather than titles or positions.

“We reward value; we don’t reward titles and positions. Every responsibility must translate to results for the people and communities we serve,” he said.

Okeke explained that while ANSACA provides strategic direction and coordination at the state level, the effectiveness of HIV interventions depends largely on what happens within LGAs, wards and communities.

He stressed the importance of linking community based HIV awareness and testing to the health system, noting that identifying people living with HIV must be followed by prompt referral, linkage to treatment and continued support.

“When you discover someone who is HIV positive, your responsibility does not end there. You must ensure that the person is linked to care, followed up and supported to remain in care,” he said.

During the interactive session, LACA Managers and HAB Coordinators identified operational challenges affecting their activities, while Okeke assured them that ANSACA would work towards addressing the issues and strengthening implementation at the grassroots.

He said the 1,693 Ward Brigaders would work alongside LACA, HAB and other community structures to expand access to accurate HIV information, promote testing and strengthen referrals and linkage to appropriate services.

Okeke reaffirmed ANSACA’s commitment to building a sustainable, community-driven HIV response in line with the vision of the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and the state’s goal of achieving zero new HIV infections by 2030.

He said the true measure of progress would be seen at the community level in the number of people reached with accurate information, those who know their HIV status and the effectiveness of systems linking people who test positive to treatment and helping them remain in care.
