ABOUT - State Secondary Education Board

Established in 1988, the Edo State Secondary Education Board, formally the Post Primary Education Board, operates under the Edo State Education Law of 1980, the Bendel State Post Primary Education Edict of 1988, and the Unified Teaching Service (Staff) Regulations of 1973. For the first time in over 30 years, the state government under the leadership of Hi

s Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki, embarked on ‘Comprehensive Secondary Education Reforms’ which commenced in September 2022. The overarching reform areas include; Governance, Innovative Teaching, Learning for Skills, School Environment, and Values. The Ministry of Education led by Dr Joan Osa Oviawe, spearheads the EdoBEST2.0 reforms, the Secondary Education Board is streamlined to function as a professional Board that provides technical expertise for the administration of secondary schools. To provide exceptional secondary education that empowers student leaders to harness their abilities in a dynamic learning environment, promoting academic excellence, character development, and a spirit of innovation. The first Phase of the Reform focuses on Human Capital Development:

• Improved School Leadership: We recognize that no organisation can perform above its leadership capacity, Consequently, Executive Principals are appointed through a merit-based process. This process is anchored on a stakeholder-led interactive session.

• Routine training of teachers: We are transitioning to school and cluster-based teacher training as a cost-effective option for routine teacher training.
– We identify top-performing teachers and deploy them as teacher mentors.
– We leverage technology by sourcing and distributing contents that align with our needs.

• Getting Teachers into Our Classrooms:
– Successful recruitment of 1500 teachers through the Edo Supporting Teachers to Achieve Results (EdoSTAR) fellowship program, marking the first teacher recruitment since 2011.

• Our Classrooms:
– Learner-centred teaching methods.
– Improved lesson delivery.
– Standardized instruction through scripted lessons.
– STEAM learning approaches. Project-based learning.

• Safeguarding
– Promoting safe schools.

The Edo State Senior Secondary Education Board, SSEB, has inaugurated a 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 for senior secondary schools to promote discipline, professionalism, and accountability.

Speaking at the event, SSEB Executive Chairman, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐎𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐡𝐨 𝐄𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐞, said the Council was not set up to victimize teachers but to protect committed educators, students, and the integrity of the profession.

She noted the move aligns with 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐎𝐤𝐩𝐞𝐛𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨’𝐬 education reforms and the "𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐃𝐀" to ensure quality learning in Senior Secondary Schools.

Education stakeholders commended the initiative. 𝐌𝐫. 𝐄𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐛𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐮𝐬 𝐎𝐬𝐚𝐡𝐨𝐧, ANCOPSS President, described it as a fair and impartial platform for handling disciplinary issues.

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐀𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐡𝐢 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐈𝐝𝐮𝐛𝐨𝐫, ASUSS Chairman, called it the first of its kind by SSEB and said it will ensure fairness for all teachers.

The Board urged Council members to discharge their duties with fairness, transparency, and integrity to improve teaching and learning outcomes in the state.

The Executive Chairman, Edo State Senior Secondary Education Board, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐎𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐡𝐨 𝐄𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐞, today paid an unscheduled inspection visit to 𝐈𝐫𝐫𝐮𝐚 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥, 𝐈𝐫𝐫𝐮𝐚, 𝐄𝐝𝐨 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥.

The visit is part of the Board’s ongoing assessment of schools captured for renovation under the intervention plan of
𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲, 𝐒𝐞𝐧. 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐎𝐩𝐤𝐞𝐛𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐝𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞.

Dr. Erewele, who was conducted round the school by the Principal and staff, expressed concern over the state of some facilities but commended the teachers and students for their resilience.

She assured the school community that Irrua Girls has been captured for renovation in the current phase of the Governor’s school rehabilitation program.

"The Governor is committed to ensuring that every Edo child, including the girls of Irrua, learn in a safe and conducive environment. "𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐍𝐞𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧" we are rebuilding our schools one at a time, she said.

The Chairman urged the students to remain focused and promised that work will commence soon to give the school a new look.

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Senior Secondary Education Board, SSEB, Dr. Rita Otibho Erewele, has commended Hon. Sunny Ojiezele Osezua, house of assembly member representing Esan South-East Constituency in Edo State House of Assembly, for his significant investment in educational infrastructure across his constituency.

Hon. Ojiezele, popularly known as “Ikpenomen”, was accompanied by His Royal Majesty, Sidney Oiyahumhen II, during a courtesy visit to the SSEB Chairman’s office in Benin City. He briefed the Board on key constituency projects aimed at improving learning conditions in senior secondary schools.

According to the lawmaker, his interventions include the 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝟔 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐬, the building of examination halls, the supply of over 120 classroom chairs and desks, and other basic infrastructure to enhace senior secondary schools in his community/host communities. He stated that the projects are designed to remove infrastructure barriers that hinder effective teaching and learning.

Dr. Erewele applauded Hon. Ojiezele’s commitment, describing his efforts as a direct complement to the Board’s mandate under Governor Monday Okpebholo’s 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚.

To sustain the infrastructure gains, she assured the lawmaker that SSEB would prioritize the deployment of teachers and principals to schools in Esan South-East facing personnel shortages.

She further disclosed that Governor Monday Okpebholo remains a strong advocate for quality education and has pledged to recruit more teachers into the state’s secondary school system to close staffing gaps and improve academic performance.

In attendance were Hon. Vincelin Itama Udaze, member representing Edo Central Senatorial District at SSEB, and other dignitaries.

The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to deepen synergy for the development of public secondary education in Edo State.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL) Edo State Chapter, has recognised the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Senior Secondary Education Board (SSEB), Dr. Rita Otibho Erewele, for her outstanding performance and commitment to educational development in the state.

The award was presented by the Co-Chairman of the Scholarship Programme Committee, Engr. Shegun Wilkie, on behalf of the Chairman of the Section, Engr. Ademola Adebalogun.

Speaking during the presentation, Engr. Wilkie appreciated Dr. Rita Erewele for granting public secondary school students the opportunity to participate in the Society's recently concluded Science quitz and inter school science competition. He also called for stronger collaboration between the SSEB and the Society of Petroleum Engineers to enable both organisations to achieve greater impact in the education sector.

In her response, the Chairman of SSEB, Dr. Rita Otibho Erewele, expressed appreciation for the award and pledged to strengthen collaboration with the Society of Petroleum Engineers. She dedicated the award to all science students in all public senior secondary schools in Edo State, reaffirming her commitment to improving the quality of education and creating more opportunities for students.
