Bauchi ACReSAL Commences Training and Empowerment of Five Hundred (500) Women on Backyard Farming and Improved Cookstove Utilization.

As part of efforts to promote nutrition and improve livelihoods in both urban and rural communities, the Bauchi State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project has commenced the
Training of three hundred 300 women on backyard farming and distribution of starter packs across the (20) local government areas of the state.

Another set of 200 women, ten from each LGA, will also be trained on the utilization of improved cookstoves. These stoves are designed to protect women from smoke-related health illnesses, improve their livelihoods, and minimize cooking costs. Ultimately, this will reduce the cutting down of trees for firewood and charcoal, thereby mitigating the effects of deforestation and climate change.

The initiative is being implementing in collaboration with Bauchi ACReSAL's focal non-governmental organisation, the Savannah Institute for Sustainable Development (SISDev), alongside the project's Desk Officers and the local government agric extension agents and other stakeholders at various local government areas.

The initiative is aimed to equip beneficiaries with the requisite knowledge on backyard farming and climate smart agricultural practices with the view to strengthened their economic growth and the provision of homebased food needs such as tomato, okra spinach, pepper among others.

During the trainings, the women will received hands-on guidance on the precise measurement and application of seeds, organic fertilizers, and agrochemicals. This, to minimize waste, ensure maximum efficiency, improve soil fertility, and boost crop yields.

Some of the beneficiaries who shared their experiences during the training said the event is impactful and expressed their gratitude for being included in the project. They commended Bauchi ACReSAL’s inclusive implementation strategy and pledged to fully utilize the knowledge and materials received to better their families and communities.

So far the training was conducted in eight LGAs of Alkaleri, Dass, Dambam, Darazo, Gamawa, Ganjuwa, Jama'are and Katagum respectively.

Recalled that Bauchi ACReSAL Trains and empower four hundred smallholder farmers on climate-smart and regenerative agricultural practices at the Project's plant nursery development units across the twenty local government areas of the state.

Stakeholder Engagement for the Accelerated Implementation of Hadejia-Jama’are Strategic Catchment Management Plan

The primary goal of the engagement is to translate the recommendations of the Hadejia-Jama’are strategic catchment management plan into tangible and implementable outcomes through collaborative action across multiple sectors.

The event brought together experts from federal and state MDAs within the River Basin, members of academia, traditional institutions and development partners.

The stakeholders are expected to establish a validated list of interventions, draft an implementation roadmap, reach a consensus on coordination structures and define clear funding mechanisms.

Bauchi ACReSAL's Project Coordinator Dr Ibrahim Kabir, alongside the permanent secretary, inistry of water esources, Bauchi state, Engr Samaila Tela, Director General BASEPA, Mahmud Muhammad Bose, the project's Engineer and GIS Officers, Muktar Yerima Giade and Muazu Aminu Aliyu, are attending the event.

ACReSAL Intensifies CRF Sensitisation in Itas and Busuri Communities: Urges Responsible Loan Management when Accessed.

The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project has continued its sensitisation campaign on the Community Revolving Fund (CRF) with engagements in Itas and Busuri communities of Itas/Gadau and Katagum Local Government Areas of Bauchi State, stating the benefit to embrace the initiative, adhere to its guiding principles and ensure that the fund revolves within their communities for sustainable agricultural development when accessed.

The sensitisation exercise, which was aimed at deepening community understanding of the CRF initiative, was attended by community leaders, farmers, associations and other stakeholders.

Representing the Project Coordinator, Nasiru Audu Umar explained that the initiative was designed to strengthen community-based agricultural activities and improve the livelihoods of beneficiaries, particularly through support to farmers associations, informing the beneficiaries to understand that the CRF is a loan and not a grant, and therefore must be repaid to enable other members of the community to benefit.

Also speaking, Mahmood Bala Umar took the communities through the objectives and modalities of the Community Revolving Fund, stressing the importance of collective responsibility, accountability and sustainability in the management of the fund. He called on the communities to see the CRF as a collective opportunity to improve their agricultural activities and create lasting benefits for present and future members.

On her part, the Executive Director of Savannah Institute for Sustainable Development (SISDev), Madam T**i Yakubu, said ACReSAL, through the Focal NGO, would continue to provide capacity building, sensitisation and community engagement to ensure the success and sustainability of the CRF initiative, explaining that such engagements would help communities understand new initiatives, address emerging challenges and strengthen sustainability measures.

While outlining the criteria for accessing the Community Revolving Fund, Madam T**i urged the participating associations to abide by the guiding principles of the initiative, stressing that transparency, accountability, proper utilisation of funds and timely repayment were essential to sustaining the revolving nature of the

The District head of Itas and the Community leader of Bulkachuwa both assured ACReSAL of their supports for the successful implementation of the initiative. They said the communities would take responsibility for ensuring that the fund benefits the people and continues to revolve within the community,

The traditional leaders expressed confidence that the initiative would succeed in the area, noting that the communities had previously benefited from similar interventions and had demonstrated its commitment to responsible management of such programmes.

Similar activities took place in Dass, Tafawa-Balewa and Bogoro LGAs.

Bauchi_Acresal Attends a Workshop on Integrated Soil Fertility Management, CSA, and SWC Technologies.

The workshop, organized by the Savannah Institute for Sustainable Development (SISDev) in partnership with ACReSAL, LPRES, and SOIL Values, focused on integrated soil fertility management, climate-smart agriculture, and soil and water conservation. The workshop brought together extension agents and lead farmers from six local government areas of Toro, Ningi, Jama'are, Shira, Itas-Gadau, and Zaki.

Held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Farm, the training combined theoretical and practical sessions led by three agricultural experts from the institution: Dr Shuaibu Yunusa, Dr Rashida Abdulmumini Bala and Dr Babaji Aliyu.

The workshop provided participants with vital insights into agroforestry, crop rotation, cover cropping, and sole, mixed, and inter-cropping systems. It also emphasized the importance of contour bunding as a water conservation technique that protects farmlands from erosion and allows for the gradual infiltration of water into the soil.

During the practical sessions, the experts demonstrated the procedures for making compost manure and liquid Bokashi. Participants were exposed to all the required technical steps, processes, and ingredients, which included kitchen waste, rice bran, water, and cow milk, among others.

Bauchi SPMU was represented at the workshop by the Gender and Social Livelihood Officers, Maimuna G Aliyu and Khadija Abdulwahab Katagum.
