This week, the Ministry welcomed the Nigeria Institution of Agricultural Engineers, NIAE Edo State Chapter, to our conference hall for a meeting that covered the full length of what mechanized agriculture in Edo State can become.

Here is where we stand today: tractors and bulldozers deployed, cluster farming active, three storage facilities functional across all three senatorial districts, and a budget that has moved from ₦6.9 billion to ₦57 billion under Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Here is where we are going: irrigation systems that free Edo farmers from seasonal dependency, modern silos that protect every gram of what they grow, mechanized commercial farming at prices that work for small-scale farmers, and engineers working inside every agricultural programme this state delivers.

The NIAE chairman described what is happening in Edo’s agricultural sector as remarkable. We intend to make that word feel like an understatement by the time this administration is done.

Edo State Government Remains Committed to Supporting Farmers, Youths and Women

Edo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Jerry Uwangue, has reaffirmed the State Government's commitment to supporting farmers across the State.

He gave the assurance when he played host to members of the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND Foundation), in conjunction with Edo Jobs, in his office at the Agriculture Hub, Benin City.

Dr. Uwangue emphasized that the State Government is focused on mechanised farming and encouraging farmers to embrace cluster farming and trenching as measures to curb insecurity and prevent herders from encroaching on farm settlements.

He charged the leadership of the Foundation to ensure that their farmers are properly profiled to enable them benefit from any support coming from the Federal or State Government.

"We are willing and ready to support our youths and women in agriculture," he said. He encouraged them to always visit the Ministry whenever the need arises, noting that experts are available to provide assistance on agricultural matters.

Earlier, the Advocacy Manager, Mr. Chuks Ofulue, gave an overview of the Foundation and thanked the Commissioner for receiving them.
He stated that PIND Foundation is a Nigerian non-profit organisation committed to promoting peace and equitable economic growth in the Niger Delta.

The Foundation supports a portfolio of market-driven, community-based programmes that strengthen livelihoods and expand economic opportunities for local businesses and communities across the region.
He further disclosed that the purpose of their visit was to introduce the Women in Sourcing and Enterprise (WISE) Programme, share progress achieved to date, and secure State support in resolving critical constraints currently limiting the programme's ability to scale and deliver its full social and economic impact for Edo State's young people, particularly women.

Mr. Ofulue said the WISE Programme has already recorded significant results in Edo State, with more than 3,000 young women successfully onboarded as commercial out-grower farmers in pilot clusters across communities including Warrake, Igbanke, Isiako and Auchi.
He appealed for government support in the areas of access to land, security in farming communities, and transportation and mobility for farmers.

The EdoJobs Cluster Coordinator, Mr. Bernard Olusegun Siwoku, thanked the Commissioner for the Ministry's support and appealed for greater synergy between the Ministry and the programme.

The onboarding exercise provided the officers with a clear understanding of the Ministry’s mandate, values, and expectations, while equipping them with the knowledge needed to contribute effectively to our programmes.

As we continue to reposition agriculture for productivity, food security, and economic growth, these new additions will play a vital role in driving our vision forward.

MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY FLAGS OFF 2026 BACK TO FARM EXPEDITION

The Edo State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has officially flagged off the 2026 Back to Farm Expedition with visits to farmers in Esan North East and Esan South East Local Government Areas, marking the start of a statewide tour across all 18 LGAs.

Led by the Honourable Commissioner, Hon. Dr. Jerry Uwangue, DFCISM, the team engaged directly with farmers in Uzea, Ubiaja, and Ugboha to identify challenges, assess opportunities, and strengthen agricultural productivity in line with the SHINE Agenda of Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo.

Dr. Uwangue emphasized that government support will now be directed to genuine farmers, with access to fertilizers, seedlings, farm implements, loans, and grants. He also encouraged participation in the Edo Farmers Profiling Exercise to enable direct engagement and support.

Farmers were introduced to the cluster farming system, which includes land clearing, security, inputs, mechanization, and market access. The Commissioner also unveiled a new farm hub at Oria, equipped with security, water supply, and machinery to support large-scale farming.

The expedition reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive, secure, and modern agriculture, positioning the sector as a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and food security in Edo State.

EDSG FLAGS OFF 2026 FARMING SEASON

The Edo State Government has distributed farm equipment and inputs to farmers across the state as part of activities marking the official flag-off of the 2026 farming season.

Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, who represented Governor Monday Okpebholo at the ceremony, said the administration remains committed to supporting farmers and strengthening agriculture to boost food production and ensure food security.

"The event marks the second phase of the Edo State farming season flag-off, signalling the beginning of the planting season across the state.

Food is a necessity for our survival, the government of Monday Senator Okpebholo has made agriculture one of the cardinal pillar of the Shine Agenda.

He said upon Governor, Senator, Monday Okpebholo, assumption of office in 2024, the first budget allocated to Agriculture was the sum 70 billion, that shows that he is passionate and committed to ensuring food security in the State.

According to him, it is important we deal with the real farmers and not political farmers, he urged the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security to ensure that government support and the distribution of farm implements gets to the real farmers.

He reaffirmed the administration's resolve to continue supporting farmers through increased funding for agriculture and the implementation of various agricultural programmes across the State.

Welcoming guests to the event, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Jerry Uwangue, described the programme as another step in the state government’s commitment to purposeful leadership and sustainable agricultural development.

He noted that the initiative reflects the government’s determination to drive economic growth, strengthen food security, and promote shared prosperity for the people of Edo State.

Farmers and agricultural stakeholders from the eighteen Local Government Areas were present showcasing various farm produce in a display that highlighted the State's Agricultural potential.

Some of the farmers who spoke at the event commended the state government for the intervention but appealed for additional support, including more farm inputs and subsidies to help improve productivity.

Earlier, a guest lecturer, Mr. Sunday Erhunmwonsere, delivered a lecture titled “Strengthening Agricultural Systems for Food Security in Edo State,” where he examined the evolution of agriculture in the state and outlined strategies for improving productivity and sustainability.

There were goodwill messages from key Partners/Farmers association and Cooperative.

Farm inputs distributed to farmers at the event included spray machines, fertilizers, knapsack mist dusters, boots, and other agricultural implements.

Agric Ministry Set to Collaborate with College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Iguoriakhi

The Edo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Jerry Uwangue, has assured of the Ministry’s synergy to restore the instructional pride of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Iguoriakhi.

Dr. Uwangue gave the assurance during a meeting with the management of the college in his office at the Agric Hub.
As the supervising ministry to the college, the Commissioner urged the management to always make their requests and challenges known through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security so as to enable the institution get quick responses and resolutions to any issues affecting the college from the State Government.

He reiterated that his office is accessible and that they should feel free to visit whenever the need arises.

Earlier, the Provost of the college, Dr. Andrew Omosefe, said the ministry should nominate a staff member from the ministry to serve as a representative on the governing council of the college.

He also appealed to the ministry to assist the college in erecting a perimeter fence around the institution for safety and to prevent encroachers from trespassing on the college land.

Dr. Omosefe further solicited for equipment for the Agricultural Engineering Department to enable students gain more practical knowledge in that area.

He stated that resource verification is important for the accreditation of some departments in the college, as instructed by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
He added that there is also a need to rename the institution to College of Agricultural Science and Technology, noting that the college currently does not have access to Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
