GWER WEST CHAIRMAN,FLAGS OFF 2026 SEASONAL MALARIA CHEMOPREVENTION (SMC) CAMPAIGN

The health sector remains one of the key priority areas receiving significant attention under the administration of the Executive Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area, Hon. Ormin Torsar Victor . Since assuming office, the Chairman has consistently demonstrated his commitment to improving healthcare delivery and promoting the wellbeing of the people of Gwer West.

In line with this commitment, Hon. Ormin yesterday officially flagged off the 2026 Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) Campaign in Naka, the headquarters of Gwer West LGA, marking the commencement of this year's exercise across the local government area.

Represented by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Stephen Orya, the Chairman called on all parents and caregivers to fully embrace the programme by ensuring that children between the ages of 3 months and 59 months receive the preventive malaria medication.

He assured the State and Local Government implementation teams, including supervisors and trained Community Drug Distributors (CDDs), of the council's full support throughout the exercise. He noted that through efforts by his administration to facilitate the return of displaced persons from IDP camps to their communities, health workers would have unhindered access to eligible children across the various villages in the LGA.

The Chairman also urged all stakeholders involved in the campaign to remain vigilant, adding that information regarding the few security-challenged areas would be communicated to the implementation team to ensure effective planning and coverage.

Speaking during the event, the Deputy Director of the Primary Health Care Authority (PHCA), Naka, Mr. Yongo, expressed appreciation to the Chairman for honouring the invitation and demonstrating strong support for the campaign. He appealed to all Gwer West residents to cooperate with health workers and ensure that eligible children receive the SPAQ drugs.

Also speaking, the State Supervisor, Mrs. Dzever Sharon, commended the people of Gwer West for their hospitality and support towards the programme and called for sustained cooperation throughout the implementation period.

In his remarks, the Lead Training Technical Assistant, Comr. Lanshima Steve Igbaugende, highlighted the technological innovations introduced for this year's SMC campaign by the lead malaria intervention partner in Benue State, PATH. He encouraged residents to embrace the innovations and cooperate fully with field workers to ensure the success of the exercise.

He further clarified that the SPAQ drugs are preventive medications and not treatment for malaria. According to him, the drugs are intended only for healthy and eligible children within the target age bracket. Children found to be unwell during the exercise will be referred to the nearest health facility for proper diagnosis and treatment before receiving the medication.

The Chairman used the opportunity to appreciate the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for his administration's unwavering commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and improving human services across the state. He noted that the Governor's people-oriented policies and support for critical health interventions continue to make a positive impact on the lives of Benue citizens.

The SMC campaign commenced yesterday and will run for four days, with a possible two-day mop-up exercise for Cycle One. Members of the public are also informed that subsequent cycles of the campaign will take place in July (Cycle 2), August (Cycle 3), and September (Cycle 4) respectively.

Residents are encouraged to support the exercise and take advantage of this important intervention aimed at protecting children from malaria and promoting a healthier Gwer West.

PRESS STATEMENT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WHEN GRIEF MUST NOT BREED FALSEHOOD
........ a call for responsible voices from Gwer-East youths

The recent wave of reactions across social media following the tragic and unprovoked killings of our brothers in Mbalom has been both emotional and, in many cases, dangerously misleading.

First and foremost, I pray for the repose of the souls of our departed brethren. May God grant them eternal rest and comfort the families they left behind.

Grief is powerful. It clouds judgment, stirs anger, and sometimes pushes people toward conclusions that are neither logical nor factual. History and human behavior have shown that in moments of pain, individuals may misdirect blame, even toward innocent neighbours or relatives. This is exactly why the emerging narrative accusing the Ihyarev people, particularly those from Gwer-West, of complicity in the Mbalom attack is not only false but deeply unfortunate.

Let us reason together.

Do Fulani herdsmen share territorial borders with Gwer-West? No.

Do they share bloodlines or kinship with the people of Gwer-West? No.

Are Gwer-West communities cohabiting or collaborating with these attackers? Absolutely not.

Has Gwer-West been spared from these atrocities? Far from it.

In truth, Gwer-West has endured years of relentless violence, villages sacked, ancestral lands forcefully occupied, innocent lives cut short, women violated, and families displaced. The only federal highway linking the area to the state capital has been intermittently cut off for years, suffocating economic and social life. These are not distant stories, they are lived realities spanning over a decade.

Yet, despite these shared pains, Gwer-West has not turned against its neighbours. Instead, there has been resilience, restraint, and a continued call for unity in the face of a common threat.

To our brothers and sisters, especially the young people of Gwer-East, this is a moment that demands responsibility, not recklessness. Social media is a powerful tool, but when used without verification or critical thinking, it becomes a weapon of division. Publishing unverified claims, driven by emotion rather than evidence, only deepens wounds and fractures the unity we desperately need.

Let us be clear, our enemy is not one another.
The real threat is the persistent violence that has plagued our communities for years.

We must reject narratives that divide us and instead strengthen collective resolve. Unity, truth, and informed voices are our strongest tools in confronting this menace.

As we mourn with the people of Gwer, let us also stand together, firm, focused, and united, against those who seek to destroy our land and our future.
