TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE KEBBI STATE HONOURS NAWOJ

The Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG-GBV), Kebbi State, presented an Award of Excellence to the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kebbi State Chapter, in recognition of its outstanding contribution to the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the state. The award was presented as part of efforts to encourage and strengthen the collective fight against GBV in Kebbi State. NAWOJ was specifically recognized for its persistent and unique contributions through the use of journalism to raise awareness, advocate for victims, and promote actions aimed at addressing gender-based violence.

The award was received by Hassana Koko, the State Chairperson of NAWOJ Kebbi State. It was presented on behalf of the TWG-GBV by Abdulmumin Musa Omiya, the Public Relations Officer of Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence, alongside Hajiya Maimuna Abdullahi, the Empowerment officer TWG on GBV.The Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence in Kebbi State is chaired by Her Excellency Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu, with Comrade Nasiru Idris serving as the state Secretary..

The presentation took place at the Kebbi State Television (Kebbi TV) Garden during a Ramadan Iftar gathering organized by NAWOJ Kebbi State on 15/03/2026. The event brought together women representing various organizations, including Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), Sahel Initiative for Gender Equality and Development(SIGED) and MUNA Enterprise, among many others.

COURTESY VISIT OF TWG ON GBV KEBBI TO THE PERMANENT SECRETARY, MINISTRY FOR WOMEN AFFAIRS

The Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG on GBV) paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry for Women Affairs, Kebbi State on Monday, 23rd February 2026.

The visit provided an opportunity to formally brief the Permanent Secretary, Muhammed A. Usman, on the mandate, activities, and ongoing initiatives of the TWG aimed at addressing Gender-Based Violence across Kebbi State.

Key highlights from the meeting:

• Expansion plans for Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC) to improve access to survivor support services.
• Planned capacity-building training for social workers, with support from the Office of Her Excellency, Hajiya Zainab Nasare.
• Strengthening institutional collaboration and coordination between stakeholders.
• Advocacy for dedicated office space for TWG on GBV operations.
• Emphasis on centralizing GBV activities and documentation for effective response.
• Discussion on establishing a shelter to support survivors and their families.

The Permanent Secretary reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the TWG and strengthening collaboration, including engagement with the Ministry of Budget and Planning, Kebbi State to ensure coordinated gender inclusion efforts statewide.

The meeting ended successfully with renewed commitment toward eliminating GBV and protecting vulnerable persons.

Stakeholders’ Engagement on the Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Bunza LGA

On 23rd January 2026, stakeholders gathered at the Palace of the Sarkin Bunza to address the rising cases of Gender-Based Violence in Bunza Local Government Area, Kebbi State.

The engagement featured presentations from the Technical Working Group on GBV, Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), Ministry of Women Affairs, and security agencies.

Key discussions focused on:
• Community responsibility in preventing GBV
• Importance of timely reporting
• Free services provided by SARC
• Legal provisions under the VAPP Law
• Cultural and socio-economic factors contributing to GBV

The Sarkin Bunza, Dr. Aminu Bunza, reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring perpetrators face justice and emphasized zero tolerance for GBV in the LGA.

GBV must be stopped collectively and decisively.

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT FOR COMMUNITY-LED PREVENTION OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: A MEETING BETWEEN TWG-GBV KEBBI STATE AND THE ROYAL HIGHNESS, SARKIN BUNZA.

The visit was undertaken to seek approval and agree on a suitable date and venue for a proposed GBV sensitization programme in Bunza Local Government Area at his palace.The initiative was informed by reports from the Director and Medical consultant SARC Centre kalgo Dr Nuraddeen Kangiwa indicating an alarming increase in cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Bunza town and within the communities.
Comrade Nasiru Idris Secretary TWG on GBV formally presented the objective of the visit to Distract Head, the Sarkin Bunza. He emphasized the urgency of community sensitization in response to the rising GBV cases and work out possible solutions to the alarming cases.
In his response, the Sarkin Bunza welcomed the initiative and expressed strong support for the proposed sensitization programme. He noted that there is usually a regular meeting involving all traditional rulers on Fridays, which he identified as an appropriate platform and timing for engaging men and women during the sensitization exercise.
Regarding women focused awareness, the Sarkin Bunza stated that his wife, Hajiya Nafisa ED and Founder of ZakiGems Organisation
has greater access to women within the community and can play a key role in mobilization and outreach. He suggested a gender segregated approach, where:
Women would be sensitized within households and women’s gatherings, and Men would be sensitized at the palace and traditional institutions.

WRAPA, FIDA, and partners have marked the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) with a community engagement in Kawara Village, Kebbi State.

The programme began with a community sanitation exercise, followed by an interactive dialogue and storytelling forum aimed at preventing GBV and increasing awareness of protection laws.

Organized by WRAPA in partnership with FIDA, H-SARNA, TWG on GBV, and other stakeholders, the event brought together community leaders, CSOs, security agencies, medical professionals, and the media.

Speaking at the event, WRAPA Kebbi Executive Director Comrade Nasiru Idris stressed the need for sustained community involvement to address GBV and child abuse. Medical Consultant Dr. Nuraddeen Kangiwa also emphasized community-driven solutions to reduce GBV cases.

The Kebbi State Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting women and children through Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakar Jambali, Special Adviser on Public Enlightenment and Orientation.

A powerful storytelling session featured real-life experiences shared by young girls, while Barr. Hauwa Usara educated participants on the VAPP Act and Child Protection Laws, highlighting reporting mechanisms and penalties for offenders.

Key issues identified included girl-child hawking, out-of-school children, sexual abuse, and weak parental supervision. The Kawara community pledged to discourage child hawking, strengthen parental oversight, promote girl-child education, and promptly report GBV cases.

The Village Development Committee (VDC) will lead implementation with support from WRAPA, TWG, and partner organizations.

Ending GBV begins at the community level.

MSI & TWG ON GBV COMMEMORATE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GBV IN KEBBI STATE

On 17th December 2025, Marie Stopes International (MSI), in collaboration with the Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG on GBV), commemorated the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence at the Emir of Kalgo Palace, Kalgo.

The engagement, which commenced at 10:05am, was attended by traditional leaders, government officials, civil society organizations, women and youth groups. The Emir of Kalgo welcomed participants and was later represented by Dan Galadiman Kalgo, who urged the community to take GBV issues seriously.

Comrade Nasiru Idris, Secretary TWG on GBV Kebbi State, highlighted the objectives of the meeting and emphasized the importance of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law, encouraging stakeholders to spread awareness at the grassroots.

MSI representatives Samira Bello Shinko and Janet presented MSI’s GBV interventions, including referrals to hospitals, TWG-GBV, and the distribution of toll-free contact cards for reporting GBV cases.

Other contributions came from Kabiru Musa, Dr. Nuraddeen Kangiwa of Maitalle Tara SARC Kalgo, Bashar Musa from the Ministry for Women Affairs, and Rtd CSP Ladi Haruna, who shared professional insights on GBV.

The session ended with questions, religious perspectives, and a strong call for collective action by the Women Leader of Kalgo LGA to combat GBV in the community.

NEWLY BORN BABY GIRL RESCUED AND CARED FOR BY TWG ON GBV, KEBBI STATE

Following a distress call received from a security personnel of the Gwandu Emirate, Commander Ahmed Waziri, under the leadership of Ibrahim Tafida at 4:30pm on Monday 15/12/2025, the Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG ON GBV), Kebbi State, promptly intervened.

The Secretary of TWG ON GBV, Comrade Nasiru Idris, alongside the Public Relations Officer, Abdulmumin Musa Omiya, accompanied the baby’s mother, a 17-year-old girl from Gwadangaji who has been living independently in Badariya. In such situation, she became pregnant and gave birth outside medical facility or attention resulting in serious concern for the baby and the mother, the newborn baby girl ,the girl’s ( survivor) mother, and two operatives of the Gwandu Council Security swiftly headed to the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC).

At the SARC, the case was referred to the Paediatrics Unit, where the newborn was examined and confirmed to be in good health. Necessary medications were prescribed, and the mother(survivor )was counseled and advised to commence exclusive breastfeeding.

Further medical examination of the mother (survivor)revealed birth-related tears, which were promptly treated and repaired by medical personnel out of the funds usually available at the SARC Centre.It should be noted that services at the SARC centre are always free of charge. All prescribed medications were handed over to the mother of the survivor.

The intervention was concluded at Kalgo Medical Centre. The team departed at 7:32 pm on Monday, 15th December 2025. The mother, survivor, and baby girl were later dropped at their residence safely at about 7:50 pm.

Arrangements are underway for the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, and the case will be formally handed over to the Security Agent for further investigation and prosecution.

THE TECHNICAL WORKING GBV GROUP EXPRESSES ITS SINCERE APPRECIATION TO ALL PARTICIPANTS AND CONTRIBUTORS FOR THEIR INVALUABLE SUPPORT AND COMMITMENT TOWARD THE SUCCESSFUL COMMEMORATION OF THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM 2025 IN KEBBI STATE.

On behalf of the Technical Working Group on Gender Based Violence (TWG on GBV) Kebbi State, I extend my deepest gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to all Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for the courage, sacrifice, and passion you invested to ensure a successful and impactful 2025 16 Days of Activism, despite the many challenges and obstacles encountered.
Your film commitment, resilience, and determination made it possible to sensitize and meaningfully engage communities across the state through diverse media, platforms, and approaches. These collective efforts have not only raised awareness but have also strengthened community understanding and action toward preventing and reporting gender based violence.

WOMEN IN DA’AWAH IN COLLABORATION WITH MEDICAID FOUNDATION RAISE AWARENESS ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN KEBBI STATE

As part of activities marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 2025, Women in Da’awah in collaboration with Medicaid Foundation conducted an awareness outreach at Rugar Fulani to sensitize women on the dangers and consequences of GBV on women and children.

During the sensitization, the State Coordinator of Women in Da'awah Hajiya Hauwa’u Zaki, educated participants on the various forms of gender-based violence and emphasized the need for women to remain vigilant, prevent abuse, and promptly report any suspected or confirmed GBV cases to relevant authorities. She encouraged the women not to tolerate any form of violence and to speak out to safeguard themselves and their children.

The outreach also highlighted available GBV response channels and reinforced the importance of community participation in ending violence against women and girls.

NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION (NHRC), KEBBI STATE CHAPTER OBSERVES THE 2025 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE WITH A PUBLIC RALLY

Marking the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Kebbi State Chapter on 10th December 2025 at 9:00 a.m. organised a one-day public rally in Birnin Kebbi to raise awareness on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and to commemorate the 2025 International Human Rights Day.

The procession, led by Bar. Hamza, commenced from the NHRC State Headquarters and moved through the State Secretariat Roundabout to the Gwadangaji U-turn, passed through the Gwadangaji community, and finally returned to the Headquarters.

The rally featured the participation of several Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) including WRAPA, TWG-GBV, Sahel Initiative for Gender Equality and Development (SIGED), Women in Da’wah, International Human Rights Group, among others. The movement was well-coordinated with traffic control provided by officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

PENALTY FOR R**E IS LIFE IMPRISONMENT WITHOUT OPTION OF FINE, SIGED INFORMED ZAURO WOMEN.

Sahel Initiative for Gender Equality and Development shared copies of the VAPP Law document as part of the activities marking the 16 Days of Activism in Zauro, Kebbi State. The materials were distributed during an event organized by FOMWAN in Zauro. The Executive Director of the organisation, Abdulmumin Musa Omiya, briefly highlighted key offences under the VAPP Law and explained their corresponding penalties to the women in attendance urging the women to avoid, prevent and report GBV cases, stating clearly there is an existing law in Kebbi state guiding GBV issues.
