BONNY LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ENGAGES BUC GENERAL MANAGER AND MANAGEMENT TEAM, CALLS FOR IMPROVED POWER AND WATER SUPPLY

* AS BONNY LOCAL GOVERNMENT 2026 APPROPRIATION SCALES SECOND READING

The Bonny Legislative Council led by Rt. Hon Kingsley Tammy Jumbo engaged the Management of the Bonny Utility Company (BUC) over the persistent poor power supply affecting residents of Bonny Local Government Area. During the engagement, the Council expressed deep concern and dissatisfaction over the unstable electricity/water situation expressing its negative impact on businesses and the general well-being of the people, while calling for improved service delivery and proactiveness.

In response, the BUC Manager Mr. Dominic Dung explaining the cause of the unfortunate situation commended the Executive Chairman of Bonny LGA, Amasenibo Hon. Abinye Blessing Pepple, DSSRS, and the Legislative Council for their relentless efforts, assuring the Legislative Council and the people of Bonny that deliberate frantic steps are being taken to stabilize power supply, noting that Bonny is rapidly growing and the demand for electricity continues to increase daily, a reality the BUC is passionately tackling.

The management further disclosed the erecting of additional Transformers for Abalamabie road and Macauley, highlighting major challenges affecting power distribution, including the vandalization and cutting of protective cables, illegal connections, and the bypassing of meters by some persons.

According to them, these activities make it difficult to distribute power fairly and efficiently across the LGA.

The Leader of the Legislature Rt. Jumbo re-emphasized that the Council remains open to partnership and synergy with BUC and other relevant stakeholders to ensure lasting solutions to the power challenges in Bonny for the overall best interest of the people in the LGA.

BONNY LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL MOVES TO REVIEW TRANSPORTATION BYE-LAW

~As Bill Passes First and Second Reading

The Bonny Legislative Council (10th Assembly) has commenced the process of reviewing and amending the Bonny Local Government Transportation Bye-Law No. 2 of 2002, a strategic move aimed at strengthening the transportation framework within the Local Government Area. The motion, presented during plenary on Thursday, March 5, 2026, by the Chief Whip and Councillor representing Ward 4, Hon. Edwin Uriah Benstowe, underscored the urgent need to update the existing legislation to reflect present-day transportation realities within the LGA.

Presenting the motion, Hon. Benstowe noted that the current bye-law, enacted in 2002, was largely centered on marine transportation and has become outdated in view of the expanding road network and increasing vehicular activities across the LGA. He emphasized that the proposed amendment will broaden the scope of the law to effectively regulate land transportation, enhance safety and security awareness within the sector, strengthen vehicular control mechanisms, and improve revenue generation, particularly the construction of Bonny–Bodo Road and other road infrastructure projects.

Following deliberations, the Leader of the 10th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kingsley Tammy Jumbo, commended the Chief Whip for the timely motion, and proceeded with the First and Second Reading. The proposed amendment was committed to the House Committee on Transportation for further legislative action while scheduling a public hearing, in recognition of the bill’s significant public interest and its role in promoting an efficient, safe, and well-regulated transportation system within Bonny Local Government Area.
