JIGAWA STATE CONDUCTS 6-DAY MIDTERM JOINT EXTERNAL EVALUATION (JEE) OF STATE HEALTH SECURITY

The Jigawa State Government, through the State Ministry of Health (lead agency), successfully conducted a 6-day Midterm Joint External Evaluation (JEE) of State Health Security from 17th to 22nd November 2025 at Bizarre Luxury Apartment, Kano.

The evaluation brought together key MDAs and stakeholders, including the:

State Ministry of Livestock & Fisheries Development
State Ministry of Justice
State Ministry of Environment & Climate Change
Jigawa State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA)
National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)

The exercise was facilitated by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) with strong technical and financial support from Lafiya UK–FCDO and the World Health Organization (WHO).

This midterm JEE marks a significant milestone in strengthening Jigawa State’s health security architecture, ensuring better preparedness, detection, and response to public health emergencies.

Together, we are building a safer and healthier Jigawa State.

📰 BREAKING: Jigawa State Activates Event-Based Surveillance (EBS) System
12th November 2025 – Dutse, Jigawa State

In a decisive move to strengthen health security, the Jigawa State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Lafiya UK–FCDO, has officially launched and activated the Event-Based Surveillance (EBS) system across the state.

EBS is an innovative disease surveillance approach that enables real-time detection and verification of early warning signals from communities, media, health facilities, and other informal sources.

This milestone marks a major advancement in Jigawa’s health security architecture reinforcing the State’s commitment to early detection, rapid response, and prevention of public health threats before they escalate.

With EBS now operational, Jigawa State stands better prepared to protect lives and strengthen health resilience across all communities.

Jigawa State Ministry of Health Responds to Suspected Scabies and Rumoured Diphtheria Outbreaks in Buji and Guri LGAs

The Jigawa State Ministry of Health today, 6th November 2025, responded to suspected cases of scabies in Buji Local Government Area (LGA) and a rumoured outbreak of diphtheria in Galdimara community of Guri LGA.

A state surveillance team, led by the State Epidemiologist, in collaboration with the LGA Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers (DSNOs) and other local health officials, conducted field investigations and community response activities.

While the Buji investigation confirmed suspected cases of scabies, the rumoured diphtheria outbreak in Galdimara was found to be false after thorough verification and community assessment.

The team provided response drugs, delivered health talks, and engaged community leaders and other influential persons to strengthen awareness and promote preventive health practices.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to timely disease detection, rapid response, and continuous community sensitization to protect the health and well-being of all Jigawa residents.

🩺 Jigawa State Ministry of Health Responds to Outbreak of Scabies at Government Junior Science Secondary School (GJSSS) Miga

Date: 1st November 2025

The Epidemiology and Disease Control Unit, Department of Public Health, Jigawa State Ministry of Health, with technical support from the World Health Organization (WHO), responded to a suspected outbreak of scabies at Government Junior Science Secondary School (GJSSS), Miga.

The response team conducted an engaging health education session for all students, covering key topics such as:
1️⃣ What scabies is
2️⃣ How it spreads
3️⃣ Prevention and control measures
4️⃣ A lively question-and-answer session

A total of 111 affected students were sensitized on the proper use of the medications provided by the State Government, which included:
💊 Scabicide (Benzyl Benzoate Lotion)
🧼 Antiseptic Soap
💉 Antibiotics for secondary infection

The joint team from the Ministry of Health and WHO carried out the response to contain the outbreak and promote improved hygiene practices among students.

📢 Jigawa State Monthly Surveillance Meeting & SORMAS Tablet Distribution

The Jigawa State Ministry of Health, Epidemiology and Disease control unit of the Department of Public successfully hosted its September 2025 Monthly Surveillance Feedback Meeting, bringing together key stakeholders to review surveillance activities across the state from January to September 2025.

Major Highlight:
The meeting featured the official distribution of SORMAS Android tablets to all DSNOs and ADSNOs across Jigawa’s LGAs — a strategic move powered by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) to enhance real-time disease surveillance and reporting.

- LGA Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers (DSNOs) & Assistant DSNOs (ADSNOs)
