STATEMENT FROM THE LABOUR PARTY

Labour Party mourns Buhari's passage, says former President wanted a Nigeria where democracy works

It is with profound sadness that I, Barrister Julius Abure and the entire leadership of the Labour Party received the news of the passing of Muhammadu Buhari. I am deeply pained that he died when his wealth of experience and wise counsels are needed most in this country.

When in December 1983, General Buhari as a young military officer assumed leadership as the military Head of State, he worked so hard to restore sanity and return Nigeria into a path of integrity, discipline and incorruption. He fought against decay and moral impunity in the political system. His return into power between 2015 and 2023 also brought much relief and sanity to millions of Nigeria as exemplified by his humane approach to governance.

President Buhari was a patriot and a statesman who wished that the flawed system in Nigeria worked. He wanted a democracy that worked. It was under his government that the Electoral Act was passed, an Act that was to ensure that democracy is deep rooted.

He was a committed, courageous, disciplined, and honest leader. He left a legacy of service and our prayers is that he would be remembered for those laudable and courageous policies he saw through.

Muhammadu Buhari died on Sunday in a London hospital after battling an undisclosed illness. He was 82.

We in the Labour Party join millions of Nigeria and other world leaders across the globe to mourn the passing of this great man.

I extend my deepest condolences to his immediate family, loved ones and Nigeria, and I pray that Allah (SWT), in His infinite mercy, forgive his shortcomings, accept his deeds, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. Amen.

PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE LABOUR PARTY

Coalition party needs you more, Abure urges Gov Otti
.. Labour Party recalibrating ahead 2027

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barrister Julius Abure has asked the Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti to stop deceiving members of the public that he has not joined his illegal and unconstitutional Caretaker Committee in the coalition party.

Barrister Abure said that the leadership of the Labour Party is in a hurry to recalibrate the party ahead of 2027.

The Abia State governor had recently said that he is still a member of the Labour Party and will not join the coalition party even when all the members of his political camp, including the chairman of the illegal caretaker committee, Nenadi Usman and Peter Obi had joined the coalition.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Friday, Labour Party chairman, Barrister Abure said, "Our attention has been drawn to Otti's interview where he said that he is still a member of the Labour Party. We are not going to fall for his deception again. How can he be in Labour Party when recently he conducted the local government election in Abia State with Zenith Labour Party as his party?

"He should not think that every Nigerian is bereft of knowledge. He formed and he is funding the illegal caretaker committee that had formally joined the ADC. The icing on the cake was the Wednesday unveiling of the coalition where every member of the caretaker committee formally joined the ADC.

"We are shocked that Otti is paradoxically trying to mislead members of the Labour Party to say that he is still a member of the Labour Party. In any event, we had earlier suspended him indefinitely from the party because of his anti party activities.

Labour Party is on the move again, we have the best brand in Nigeria and we are eager to engage young Nigerians who have the interest of the nation at heart. We are therefore willing to let go everyone, no matter how high, whose interest in Nigeria is self driven, opportunistic politicians who are not principled.

Labour Party is not and cannot be in any coalition because coalition of political parties are ideologically bereft. It is a marriage of political strange fellows whose only agenda is power grabbing. It is selfish in nature and no true Democrat will agree to such amalgam. Labour Party is therefore in a hurry to sanitize itself of people without character.

It is on this note that I call on Dr. Alex Otti to move on because he cannot be in Labour Party and be working against the party.

PRESS RELEASE FROM LABOUR PARTY

Coalition: Labour Party gives Obi 48 hours to resign from party
.. Desperate politicians can't birth new Nigeria

Former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Gregory Obi has received a 48 hour ultimatum to formally resign his membership of the Labour Party having formally joined the coalition party.

Labour Party while reiterating its disinterestedness in joining the coalition said that the members of the coalition are power mongers whose only interest was self and not the people.

The party warned Nigerians that the often mouthed 'new Nigeria is Possible' is a ruse and cannot be achieved with the assemblage of old, recycled, desperate and frustrated politicians in the coalition.

In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, the party says that all those who mismanaged Nigeria over the years are the ones that gathered themselves in the coalition while noting that desperate politicians can't birth new Nigeria.

We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We're also aware that a number of them has refused to defect with him.

Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition and therefore, any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party.

Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona. The party will not avail itself to individuals who have one leg in one Party and another leg elsewhere. People that in the morning, they will claim to be in the Labour Party and in the evening they are in coalition.

Nearly 70 percent of Nigerian population are youths who are tired of the old order, tired of gerontocrats deciding their fate. The new Nigeria that the youths are dreaming of, is not what can be realized from what we are seeing in the coalition.

These people are opportunistic politicians who are only interested in relaunching themselves into circle of power, people who are desperate to continue holding on to power.

The new Nigeria of our dream can only be realized through Labour Party and the party is willing to lead Nigerians along that trajectory.

I therefore urge all members of the party to remain loyal and keep the party structure intact ahead of future elections.

STATEMENT FROM THE LABOUR PARTY

Stop blackmailng Labour Party leadership, Abure warns Obi:

* Crisis in LP created, sustained by Obi and Gov Otti

The attention of the leadership of the Labour Party was called to an interview on Monday granted by the party's candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi wherein he alleged that the APC led Federal Government has infiltrated the leadership of the Labour Party and by so doing, fomenting crisis in the party. But when asked to produce the evidence, Obi could not produce any tangible evidence. He however said that the national chairman, Barrister Julius Abure referred to the Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti as a dwarf.

As a member of our party, we sincerely do not wish to join issues with Mr. Obi but for his penchant to constantly misinform Nigerians on the real reasons for the crisis in the party, knowing that virtually most other parties are in one form of crisis or the other. We sincerely hope that he should introspect and move away from this ill-conceived narratives.

It is therefore pertinent to put on record that the problem with the Labour Party was not created by the ruling party, (APC), rather the problem in the Labour Party was created and sustained by Peter Obi and Dr. Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State who is presently serving suspension for anti-party activities. We dare Obi to produce any tangible or intangible evidence which suggests remotely or otherwise that the Abure leadership of the Labour Party is on the bed with the APC led government.

Nobody is infallible and it behoves on anyone who makes mistakes to be bold enough to own it. When good leaders fail, they should own up to their responsibilities. Obi failed in providing leadership for the party. He should own up to his mistakes. It is therefore shameful for Peter Obi and Dr. Alex Otti to continue to accuse the government of infiltrating Labour Party and by so doing demarketing the party.

This same government was in existence in 2022 when the party made six aspirants, including Prof. Pat Utomi to step down for Peter Obi as the party's candidate. The government was in existence when the party crisscrossed all the nooks and crannies of the country including the insecurity prone areas campaigning for Peter Obi in 2022 and 2023.

The government was in existence when the national chairman, Julius Abure travelled across Europe and United States to galvanized support for Peter Obi. The government was also in existence when the party leadership mobilised its members across the state leading to over six million votes won during the election.

It was the same leadership that you claimed has been infiltrated that stood with Peter Obi throughout the tribunal and up to the Supreme Court. The same Abure appeared in court more that Obi refusing to be cowed when a splinter group wanted to hijack the process. The government was in existence when Peter Obi and Dr. Alex Otti were given sole tickets for the 2027 even against the status book.

For the records, there was no problem in the Labour Party until Peter Obi and Dr. Alex Otti went to Umuahia, Abia State to create an illegal and unconstitutional Caretaker Committee that polarized the party. And may I ask, is it the ruling party that sent Obi and Otti to Umuahia to create a division in the party?

They were also aware that the courts; from the lower court up to the Supreme Court clearly affirmed the leadership of the party, but Peter Obi and Alex Otti surreptitiously plotted to hijack the leadership of the party by instigating the division. Again, is it the government in power that created the division or forced them to march to INEC headquarters to exhibit their ignorance?

For Peter Obi to be responding to the comment where the National Chairman referred to the governor as being dwarfy in knowledge, we want to say clearly that there is no action without a reaction. The National Chairman was only responding to a pejorative comment made by the governor wherein he referred to the National Chairman as 'ma********ng'.

The governor neither retracted nor apologized for that reckless statement. He showed utter disrespect to the constituted authority of the party; to the man who went out of his way to help him achieve his ambition to be a governor.

If the governor is not limited or dwarfy in knowledge, he would have appreciated the import of the Supreme Court judgement which practically resolved the crisis in the party but these men were only blinded by their inordinate desire to wrestle the party from the present leadership.

The party leadership has moved on since the Supreme Court judgement and we are working hard to reposition the party, to restore confidence in our members, and prevent further membership hemorrhage being witnessed across virtually all opposition parties in Nigeria today. We therefore think that it is improper for any member of the party, who means well for the party, to continue to make such unguided statements.

Labour Party will never go into any alliance with any other party to betray our candidates. We had every opportunity in 2023 to do so, but we chose to stand by Peter Obi and even Alex Otti before and even after the general election, when their matters were in court, but we were very consistent because of the bigger picture. And now that they have failed in their plot to dislodge a lawful leadership, they have simply resorted to blackmail instead of showing gratitude.

One takeaway from the Obi's interview is that he has acknowledged that Abure is the National Chairman of the Labour Party as he clearly stated. We are therefore calling on Peter Obi and other aggrieved members of the party to understand and digest the fact that Barrister Julius Abure leadership has come to stay and nothing can change that.

2025 CHILDRENS DAY CELEBRATION - LABOUR PARTY FELICITATES WITH ALL THE CHILDREN

-“Stand Up, Speak Up; Building a Bully-Free Generation”

Today, we join millions of people across the world to celebrate our children. We celebrate the boundless potential and creativeness of every Nigerian child. The curiosity and determination of our children are the light that brightens our paths to a brighter future as a nation.

The Labour Party remains one political party that recognizes the importance of children in nation-building, practically reflective in our slogan of papa, mama, and pikin. We believe that our children are the leaders of tomorrow, and hence, stable political institutions must be handed over to them to enjoy democracy.

Our children deserve to grow in an environment that is free from bully, where their voices are heard and their rights protected.

Our children deserve good and quality education that will place them on a platform to compete with their counterparts across the world.

Our children deserve good healthcare, good learning environments, and effective educational curricula that will encourage innovativeness in our schools.

The Labour Party remains committed to creating opportunities and promoting policies that nurture the talents of a Nigerian child and support their aspirations.

Together, we are building a society where every child can thrive safely and not afraid to dream big.

On this special day of International Children's Day 2025, we urge every Nigeria parent (papa and mama) to help our children shine, grow, and explore to become whatever they wish to become.

Our children are the leaders, innovators, and changemakers of tomorrow, and we are incredibly proud of them.

Happy Children’s Day 2025

STATEMENT FROM THE LABOUR PARTY

2027: Labour Party Not Celebrating Obi's Declaration, Declares Presidential Ticket Open
.. Obi's coalition project an affront to Party leadership

The attention of the leadership of the Labour Party has been drawn to the news trending in the media that the party is "celebrating" that its candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi has declared his intention to run on the platform of the party in 2027. I want to state emphatically that I was quoted out of context and therefore, the impression conveyed by the news was erroneous, inaccurate and does not in any way reflect the position and mood in the party.

First, while we are not opposed to anybody running under the platform of the Labour Party in the 2027 general election, we need to make it categorically clear that the party has a long standing rule on how its candidates shall emerge and automatic ticket is not one of the routes.

Recall that at the party's National Convention in 2024, the party had erroneously granted automatic tickets to our former Presidential candidate and the only governor of the party, however, that decision has since been rescinded and reversed after consulting the statute books.

Second, His Excellency, Peter Obi, hours after he spoke of his intention to run under the Labour Party, was on Sunday (yesterday) seen in a meeting of a pro-coalition group in Abuja without the permission and consent of the Labour Party leadership. This to us is really confusing and we think that Peter Obi has not come to terms with his intentions for the 2027 presidential race.

We have consistently said that Labour Party will not go into any coalition or merger of any sort ahead of 2027 general election, therefore Obi's continued association with the coalition is not only distasteful but unacceptable to the party. It is also an affront to the party leadership and we view his position as a total disregard to the party's right to make decision bidding its affairs.

We are therefore by this statement letting Nigerians know that the presidency for 2027 is open to anyone who wants to run under the platform of the party.
