This Tuesday, we examine the outcome of the just-concluded Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, a political exercise that has once again tested the strength of grassroots democracy in Nigeria’s capital.

The election, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), covered the six Area Councils of Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali.

The results reflected a mix of political dominance in some councils and strong opposition performance in others. While the ruling APC maintained its hold in certain strongholds, opposition parties made strategic gains in some areas.

Turnout was low, raising questions about voter apathy, political trust, and the effectiveness of civic education.

But, here is the bigger question, will the winners translate electoral victory into visible development at the grassroots level?

Because democracy is not just about ballots, but about service delivery, transparency, and accountability.
