🚨 RECOGNIZING ELDER ABUSE AND NEGLECT
Elder abuse is a serious issue that can happen anywhere — at home, in care facilities, within communities, and sometimes even in healthcare settings.
It may be physical, emotional, sexual, financial, or neglectful.
Some warning signs include:
🩹 Unexplained bruises, injuries or frequent accidents
😔 Sudden fear, withdrawal, anxiety or changes in behaviour
💰 Unusual financial transactions or missing money
🍽️ Poor nutrition, dehydration or inadequate personal hygiene
💊 Missed medications or untreated health problems
🏠 Unsafe or poorly maintained living conditions
🚪 Being isolated from family, friends or other people
🗣️ A caregiver speaking for the older person or preventing private conversations
One important point: neglect is also abuse. An older person who depends on others for food, medication, hygiene, safety or emotional support deserves consistent and respectful care.
❤️ What can we do?
Listen. Believe. Observe. Document concerns. Speak up.
Older adults deserve to live with dignity, safety, independence and respect — not fear or exploitation.
Recognizing the signs early can help protect an older person from further harm.
