Social protection is every well meaning Government's agenda for its people.

The National Coordinator of the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), Dr. Funmi Olotu, has stated that social protection is now an imperative for Nigeria following recent economic adjustments.

Speaking on the Renewed Hope Agenda, Dr. Olotu noted that a mandate has been made to ensure every social intervention passes through the National Social Register (NSR). This move is designed to guarantee that transparency, accountability, and fairness are the hallmarks of support for Nigerians.

Linking the NIN to the NSR helps the system:
• Target the right people and stop double-counting.
• Build more trust in the national database.
• Make sure every naira reaches the verified, poor, and vulnerable households who actually need it.

Nigeria’s social protection framework continues to expand, with the National Social Register (NSR) now covering over 77 million individuals and more than 20 million households nationwide. The Register serves as the foundation for targeted and transparent social interventions across the country.

Dr. Funmi Olotu, National Coordinator of NASSCO, said the Register strengthens coordination, reduces duplication, and ensures that social investments reach poor and vulnerable households more effectively.

In Gombe the State Operations Coordinating Unit is responsible for identifying, updating, expanding the database of the NSR. Read the infographic below to learn what and why the National Social Register is important.

The National Social Register is Nigeria’s trusted database for identifying poor and vulnerable households and supporting fair, transparent social protection delivery nationwide.

Coordinated by NASSCO and built through community based targeting, the NSR strengthens accountability, improves accuracy through NIN integration, and ensures interventions reach the right people at the right time.

The Social Register is a database of all the poor and vulnerable individuals and households in each state, so that social interventions can be directed equitably and urgently to those most in need.

The register, which is mined and updated regularly by each State Operations Coordinating Unit - SOCU, has so far covered 19 million households in Nigeria.
