Maiduguri: How Shettima's efforts deliver 40 million liters of water daily.

One of the basic necessities of life is water, that is why every serious minded government will make sure its citizens gets portable drinking water. Provision of clean water is one of the factors that determine the level of development of a society, that is why Gov Shettima gives much priority to the provision Water to the good people of Borno. Borno state government maintains one of the best water treatment plant in the northeast. Below are some of the activities of Ministry of water resources under the able leadership of Hon Zainab Gimba as she carries out the instructions of Gov Kashim Shettima.
* Procurement of Chemicals for the smooth operation of the Water treatment plant. It is important to note here that as at today, Borno state government has procured enough of the chemicals that can sustain the plant for one year in its store.
* Ministry of water resources recently procured two 1250kw capacity generators to burst power supply to the treatment plant. This is in addition to prompt payment of electricity bills to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company.
* 12 trucks of AGO or desiel is procured every quarter for the running of the Water treatment plant and the pump station at Allou Dam.
* 8 drums of engine oil or lubricant, filters and other servicing materials are also provided quarterly for the prompt maintenance of the plant as well as the pump station at Allou.
* In order to provide quality drinking water to the populace, the laboratory section of the water treatment plant was recently renovated and upgraded with the latest test equipments.
* The water treatment plant along Bama road, opposite University of Maiduguri has the capacity of treatment and making available between 30 - 35 million liters of water daily to the city of Maiduguri.
* For distribution purposes, the plant is divided into two sections or systems
* System one supplies places which include, University of Maiduguri, Teaching hospital, GRA both old and new, Damboa road, Polo, and terminate at Moduganari right infront of Maiduguri international hotel.
* System two or Wulari tour, supplies areas which include, Shehuri north and south, Wulari, Fizan, up to old Maiduguri.
* Some places in Jere, Mafa and Konduga local government areas also gets their water supply from the water treatment plant.
BOREHOLES
* Within the city of Maiduguri alone there are about 300 boreholes which both existing ones and the ones drilled by Shettima's government
* Quarterly these boreholes consumes six trucks of diesel for the smooth operation of these boreholes
* The boreholes collectively produces between 3 - 5 million liters of water daily
* About 250 motorized boreholes are operated and maintained
* About 150 solar powered boreholes are operated and maintained
* About 100 hand pumps are also in operation
* laying and maintainance of pipes that conveys water supply to the city is also regularly done by the Ministry
* The ministry of water resources is responsible for daily running and maintenance of the boreholes
