Rural Water Supply: Locating where Shettima drilled over 250 boreholes

In our morning engagement, we discussed how the Borno State Government sustain the supply of 40 million liters of water daily to the State's most populated area, Maiduguri and its environs. T‎onight, we are looking at water supply in rural areas, specifically places outside the populated State capital.

As I wrote in the morning, water is life, and one of the ways through which development of an area is measured is the availability and quality of water in the area. Water is one of the critical aspect of human development and advancement, as such provision of portable drinking water is very essential part of the work that any serious government will undertake, especially in the rural areas. It is inline with the above submission that Gov Kashim Shettima is giving much attention to the provision of portable drinking water for both human consumption and Agricultural purposes in the rural communities.

* For effective provision of water supply, Borno state government, through Rural Water Supply Agency procured 10 Dando Rigs, which has the capacity to drill up to 1000m in either Sedimentary basin or basement complex environments.

* The government also procured Super Rocks Rigs

* Cs 400 Korean Rig has also been procured

* Three Air compressors has also been procured

* three crane lorries has also been procured

* twelve water tankers has also been procured

BOREHOLES

* In Kaga local government area, about 15 boreholes has been drilled in different locations within the local government area

* Gubio local government area, five boreholes have been drilled in different places in the council

* Mgumeri local government area, about 7 boreholes has been drilled

* In Konduga local government area, about 32 boreholes has been drilled in the area

* About 25 boreholes has been drilled in different locations in Jere local government area

* About 6 boreholes has been drilled in Dikwa local government area

* Ngala local government area, has gotten about 5 boreholes

* Mafa local govt also has gotten about 8 boreholes

* Nganzai, about 3 boreholes has been drilled

* Mobar has gotten about 3 boreholes

* Bama has gotten about 6 boreholes

* MMC has gotten about 32 new boreholes across different locations

* Kukawa local government has gotten two new boreholes

* The southern Borno Senatorial zone has gotten up to 113 boreholes across the 9 local government areas in the zone.

* RUWASA also carry out maintenance, rehabilitation and upgrading of both new and existing boreholes in the rural communities.

It is important to note that different communities require different quantity of water in their areas. That's why the number of boreholes drilled in different locations varries. The RUWASA management under the leadership of Engr Muhammad Kachala are doing a good job. The Hon Commissioner of water resources Hon Dr Zainab Gimba is also doing a good job in carrying out the Mandate given to her by Gov Kashim Shetima. ‎

Maiduguri: How Shettima's efforts deliver 40 million liters of water daily.

One of the basic necessities of life is water, that is why every serious minded government will make sure its citizens gets portable drinking water. Provision of clean water is one of the factors that determine the level of development of a society, that is why Gov Shettima gives much priority to the provision Water to the good people of Borno. Borno state government maintains one of the best water treatment plant in the northeast. Below are some of the activities of Ministry of water resources under the able leadership of Hon Zainab Gimba as she carries out the instructions of Gov Kashim Shettima.

* Procurement of Chemicals for the smooth operation of the Water treatment plant. It is important to note here that as at today, Borno state government has procured enough of the chemicals that can sustain the plant for one year in its store.

* Ministry of water resources recently procured two 1250kw capacity generators to burst power supply to the treatment plant. This is in addition to prompt payment of electricity bills to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company.

* 12 trucks of AGO or desiel is procured every quarter for the running of the Water treatment plant and the pump station at Allou Dam.

* 8 drums of engine oil or lubricant, filters and other servicing materials are also provided quarterly for the prompt maintenance of the plant as well as the pump station at Allou.

* In order to provide quality drinking water to the populace, the laboratory section of the water treatment plant was recently renovated and upgraded with the latest test equipments.

* The water treatment plant along Bama road, opposite University of Maiduguri has the capacity of treatment and making available between 30 - 35 million liters of water daily to the city of Maiduguri.

* For distribution purposes, the plant is divided into two sections or systems

* System one supplies places which include, University of Maiduguri, Teaching hospital, GRA both old and new, Damboa road, Polo, and terminate at Moduganari right infront of Maiduguri international hotel.

* System two or Wulari tour, supplies areas which include, Shehuri north and south, Wulari, Fizan, up to old Maiduguri.

* Some places in Jere, Mafa and Konduga local government areas also gets their water supply from the water treatment plant.

BOREHOLES

* Within the city of Maiduguri alone there are about 300 boreholes which both existing ones and the ones drilled by Shettima's government

* Quarterly these boreholes consumes six trucks of diesel for the smooth operation of these boreholes

* The boreholes collectively produces between 3 - 5 million liters of water daily

* About 250 motorized boreholes are operated and maintained

* About 150 solar powered boreholes are operated and maintained

* About 100 hand pumps are also in operation

* laying and maintainance of pipes that conveys water supply to the city is also regularly done by the Ministry

* The ministry of water resources is responsible for daily running and maintenance of the boreholes

Enough has been done and is on going. We therefore request that you continue giving us your maximum cooperation at all time by reporting to us any problem militating against the sufficient supply of water in your area through your area managers. Our technical team are always ready to rise up to the tasking challenges by ameliorating them successfully.
Let me here thank you all for your continuous cooperation and understanding. We hope we will get more of it this year.
It is the wish of his Excellency Governor Kashim Shettima to keep increasing the water supply capacity which he has been achieving since he came on board.
This is not unconnected with the purchased of generators equipments tools, training and retraining of our technical team to put in their best. Certainly our supply had now tremendously improved and we will do more insha Allah.

Let me here thank his Excellency Hon. Kashim Shettima for his focus determination and political will which is the driving force of his achievement. He has never turn down all our request aimed at improving water supply in the state. We must also appreciate the good citizens who at all time report to our office cases relating to shortages of supply or mechanical problems requiring attention. We know we have done well in 2017 but that does not mean we cannot improve. We are looking into improving all our services to achieved water supply sufficiency in the year 2018. From all of us at the ministry for water resources we wish all happy new year in the Gregorian Calendar. Long may you live in good health and prosperity. Water Supply Projects & Interventions

The Borno state ministry of water resources under the abled leadership of Hon Dr Zainab Gimba is working day and night to insure steady water supply within Maiduguri Metropolitan and Jere. The ministry is currently undertaking major repairs on water supply pipelines within the city to boost water supply.

In addition, all broken down boreholes within the city are currently undergoing repairs and upgrading for smooth and steady water supply. The Hon Commissioner is assuring residents of Maiduguri that those that the current efforts has not reach their area to exercise patience as the work will reach every nooks and crannies of Maiduguri and beyond.

The ministry as well as its Agency, RUWASA are undertaking several projects in different locations across the state. Right now, work has reached almost 90% completion at Dangote estate opposite Dalori IDP camp in Konduga local government area of Borno state. The projects include, drilling of an industrial capacity borehole, construction of overhead water tank and house to house piping so that every house within the estate will have a steady clean water supply.

The ministry is also making sure that all liberated communities gets water supply as part the efforts of Gov Kashim Shettima's promise to return all IDPs back to their Communities.

Global Hand washing day celebration was yesterday organized by Borno state ministry of water resources in collaboration with UNICEF and other development partners to commemorate the global event. The event took place at Brgd Maimalari Command Day Secondary and Primary schools, as well as Bakasi IDP camp here is Maiduguri. The event was Chaired by Hon Commissioner for Water resources Hon Dr Zainab Gimba. His Excellency Gov Kashim Shettima who was the special guest of honor was represented by SSG Alh Usman Jidda Shuwa.

ADDRESSING THE SUPPLY OF CLEAN PORTABLE HYGIENIC AND CLEAN DRINKING WATER IN BORNO STATE.
Water is life. The African growing population demand for portable hygienic and clean water is a burden most government is battling with. According to the world health organization report in 2016. More 1.4 million lost their lives annually due to water borne diseases. There is truly an important need to address the issues related to water supply. Most areas especially the Ruralite are at the receiving end. The supply is one thing and it is quite another to maintain the supply which demand substantial amount of money and manpower.
Borno state under the able leadership of Hon. Governor Kashim Shettima is doing the best in addressing the water supply issues. The Hon. Commissioner Dr. Zainab Gimba and her team are leaving no stone unturned with regard to the task of achieving the millennium development goals in water supply. More than one thousand boreholes had been drilled in Borno under governor Kashim Shettima and some of them are solar powered. The pumping capacity and supply of the water treatment plant had been increased from 25/27 million litres per day in 2012 to 30/35 million litres per day from 2015 to date.
Recently the government had procured new twin generator to increase the supply.
Therefore, it is important that all borehole are properly check by the community with a view to reporting any problem identified at the right time.

I wish to convey our profound gratitude to Almighty Allah for everything through the year 2016. Special appreciation goes to his excellency Hon. Kashim Shettima for his support and cooperation at all time toward providing the necessary fund for provision of clean and portable drinking water to Borno citizens. I also thanks all those who have in one way or another given contributions to our success in providing water to people. Before we come on board, our water treatment plant was only supplying. 25 000 000 litres per day maximum. Today we ara generating 33 000 000 litres a day and a new twin generators were procured by governor Kashim Shettima to provide more and more clean and portable drinking water in accordance to the millennium development and sustainable goals. Our success in providing water is great despite inability of people to pay for their consumption levy. We are looking in to increasing the water supply by 2017 insha Allah. I urge our people to report all problems appropriately and on time as our technical crew are always ready to help.
