AMINU ATIKU EMERGES 21ST EMIR OF ZURMI

Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal, has approved the appointment of Alhaji Aminu Atiku as the new Emir of Zurmi.

Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada who announced this, said the approval followed due consultation and the recommendation of the Kingmakers of the Zurmi Emirate Council, in accordance with the established traditions, customs and relevant laws of the State.

The 21st Sarkin Zamfaran Zurmi, succeeded , Alhaji Bello Suleiman, who died on August 31, 2026.

Alhaji Aminu Atiku, who until his appointment was the Dangaladiman Zurmi, is the eldest son of the 19th Emir of Zurmi, late Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. He also previously served as the Sole Administrator of Zurmi Local Government Council.

Governor Lawal congratulated the new Emir and urged him to uphold the proud legacy of his predecessors by providing leadership anchored on peace, justice, unity and the welfare of his people.

The Governor noted that the Zurmi Emirate, founded centuries ago by the Alibawa clan, occupies an important place in the history of Zamfara, with a rich heritage rooted in scholarship, justice and service to the people.

He further charged the new Emir, Alhaji Aminu Atiku, to foster unity and peaceful coexistence among the diverse communities within the Emirate and work closely with the government and security agencies in strengthening peace and security.

According to a press release issued by the Senior Special Assistant ( Media ) Office of Secretary to Zamfara State Government, Suleiman Ahmad Tudu, Governor Lawal has assured the new Emir of the state government’s support and expressed confidence that his reign would contribute meaningfully to the peace, stability and development of Zurmi Emirate and Zamfara State at large.

RUWATSAN VOWS BETTER WATER, HYGIENE SERVICES FOR PEOPLE IN KAURA NAMODA LGA

The Zamfara State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSAN) has intensified efforts to improve water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area through technical supervision visits and stakeholder engagement activities aimed at achieving an Open Defecation Free (ODF) community.

A technical team, led by the Programme Manager of RUWATSAN, Dr. Abubakar Nasir Galadima has conducted a comprehensive WASH technical visit to the LGA to supervise ongoing construction and rehabilitation of WASH facilities across several locations.

The facilities visited included projects in Maguru, Bunuja, Kungurki, Kuzuttu Shiyar Magaji in Kasuwar Daji, and General Hospital Kaura Namoda.

The visit provided an opportunity for the agency to assess the progress and quality of the ongoing works, identify areas requiring attention, and ensure that the interventions meet the required standards and contribute effectively to improving access to safe water and sanitation services.

In the same vein,as part of efforts to accelerate the Open Defecation Free campaign, RUWATSAN, with support from UNICEF Sokoto Field Office (SFO) has also conducted a LGA wide stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Kaura Namoda.

During the meeting, Dr. Galadima emphasized the importance of collective responsibility, strong community leadership and multi sectoral collaboration in achieving sustainable WASH outcomes and ending open defecation in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.

He noted that the active participation of traditional, religious, political and community leaders was critical to changing sanitation behaviours, promoting household latrine ownership and ensuring that communities sustain ODF status.

A press statement issued by the Information Officer, RUWATSAN, Shamsu Aliyu indicates that the engagement also provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss practical strategies for accelerating sanitation improvements and strengthening community ownership of WASH interventions across the LGA.

Dr. Galadima reaffirmed RUWATSAN’s commitment to working with communities and partners to accelerate progress towards improved sanitation, healthier communities and making Zamfara State Open Defecation Free.

ZAMFARA INFORMATION COMMISSIONER GRIEVES DEATH OF CIGARI.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Zamfara State, Alhaji Muhammad Mahmud Dantawasa has described the death of an APC chieftain in Zamfara State, Alhaji Yusuf Cigarin Tsafe as a monumental loss.

In a statement, the Commissioner said late Cigari had led a simple life defined by kindness, humility and compassion.

Alhaji Muhammad also said, late Cigari would be remembered for his goodness to the people.
He prayed Allah to forgive the deceased and grant him the most exalted Paradise.

Alhaji Yusuf Cigarin Tsafe died in the early hours of today leaving behind 2 wives and children.
Among his brothers is Alhaji Bello Mazawaje, House Leader, Zamfara State House of Assembly.
Cigari was an aspirant for Chairmanship of Tsafe Local Government Council in the last Local Government Council Elections conducted in Zamfara State.

UPHOLD ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE IN YOUR COMMUNITY -Zangina Advises Gusau Residents

Environmental sanitation has been described as an effective strategy of improving health well being of the people.
Executive Chairman, Zamfara State Environmental Protection and Enforcement Agency, Alhaji Muhammad Zangina Abdullahi made the assertion recently, noting that the three-hour movement restriction imposed by the state government during the monthly environmental sanitation being observed in Gusau was meant to enable people concentrate on cleaning their environment.
A press statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Zamfara State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Abubakar Aliyu indicates that the Yarin Gusau maintained that the exercise was also aimed at promoting public health and reducing the risks of diseases associated with poor environmental sanitation.

He also said, during the exercise personnel of his agency usually sweep roads and other public places to make Gusau clean.

The Executive Chairman, who spoke through the Permanent Commissioner I of the Agency, Mal. Sani Muhammad Mayanci, stressed the importance of residents’ cooperation and compliance with the movement restriction, noting that their participation remained essential to the success of the sanitation exercise.

He then called on the people to properly dispose of waste, emphasising that the primary purpose of the exercise was not to penalise offenders but to promote a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility among the people.

Zangina appreciated the continued support Governor Dauda Lawal was giving to his agency, noting that the administration’s timely support had contributed significantly to the effective implementation of its environmental sanitation and enforcement activities.

GOV. DAUDA APPOINTS BARAYA AS ZAMFARA HEAD OF SERVICE.

The Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal, has approved the appointment of Alhaji Shehu Baraya as the new Head of Zamfara State Civil Service.

Secretary to the State Government, Zamfara State, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada who announced this, said the appointment was with immediate effect.

A press statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant (Media) Office of the Secretary to Zamfara State Government, Mallam Suleima Ahmad Tudu explained that; Alhaji Baraya succeeded Alhaji Yakubu Sani Haidara, who recently retired from the State Civil Service after years of meritorious service.

The new Head of Service is a seasoned career civil servant with extensive institutional experience and a deep understanding of public administration. He has served as Permanent Secretary in several ministries and, until his appointment, was the Permanent Secretary, Zamfara State Civil Service Commission.

Governor Lawal expressed appreciation to the outgoing Head of Service, Alhaji Yakubu Sani Haidara, for his dedicated service and contributions to the development of the State Civil Service, wishing him a fulfilling and rewarding post-service life.

RUWATSAN, UNICEF Strengthen Partnership to Advance WASH Services in Zamfara.*

The Zamfara State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSAN) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to improve Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services across the state.

The Programme Manager of RUWATSAN, Dr. Abubakar Nasiru Galadima, announced this after receiving the Chief of the UNICEF Sokoto Field Office, Dr. Michael Juma, who was accompanied by the UNICEF WASH Officer, Dr. Ebri Etang, and other members of the UNICEF team.

Dr. Galadima said the meeting has provided an opportunity for both organisations to have a fruitful and insightful discussion on ways to advance the WASH agenda across Zamfara State.

According to him, discussions focused on strengthening sustainable WASH systems, developing resilient infrastructure, improving operation and maintenance of WASH facilities, enhancing faecal sludge management, and strengthening water quality monitoring and surveillance.

He emphasized that the interventions were critical to accelerating progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 6 SDG , which seeks to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Dr. Galadima expressed appreciation to Dr. Michael Juma, Dr. Ebri Etang, and the entire UNICEF team for their continued partnership, technical support, and commitment to improving WASH outcomes across Zamfara State.

Dr Galadima reaffirmed RUWATSAN’s readiness to work closely with UNICEF and other development partners to promote sustainable and resilient WASH systems that will contribute to achieving improved public health and the well being of communities across the state.

RUWATSAN ENGAGES MARU STAKEHOLDERS TO ACCELERATE OPEN DEFECATION CAMPAIGN.

The Zamfara State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSAN), with support from the UNICEF Sokoto Field Office (SFO), has convened an LGA wide stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Maru Local Government Area as part of efforts to accelerate the state’s Open Defecation Free (ODF) campaign.

The engagement, led by the RUWATSAN Programme Manager, Dr. Abubakar Nasir Galadima, PhD, brought together stakeholders from all 10 wards of Maru LGA to strengthen collective efforts towards ending open defecation in the area.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Galadima stressed the importance of strong collaboration and community ownership in achieving and sustaining ODF status.

He commended the stakeholders for their commitment and support, reaffirming RUWATSAN’s determination, in partnership with UNICEF, to improve access to clean water, adequate sanitation and a healthier environment for communities across Zamfara State.

DR. Galadima urged participants to intensify community mobilisation and advocacy, encouraging households to embrace the use of sanitary toilets and abandon the practice of open defecation.

He noted that achieving ODF status requires sustained commitment from government institutions, traditional and community leaders, security agencies, development partners and residents.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by stakeholders to work collectively towards ensuring that Maru LGA achieves and sustains Open Defecation Free status, contributing to improved sanitation, public health and the overall wellbeing of communities in the area.

GOV. LAWAL RECEIVES OUTSTANDING GOVERNOR AWARD AT DAILY TIMES CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, received the Outstanding Governor Award from the Daily Times in the North–West region during its centenary anniversary in Abuja.

The governor accepted the award today at the DTN@100 Times Heroes Awards, organised by Nigeria’s oldest newspaper to commemorate its 100th anniversary.

Governor Lawal was recognised for his leadership, public service, and contribution to national development.

The award was part of activities celebrating the centenary of the newspaper, which was first published in 1926 and has chronicled Nigeria’s political, economic, social, and cultural progress over the past century.

Chairman of the DTN@100 Heroes Awards Council, Bolaji Okusaga, stated that Governor Lawal was chosen because he received the highest nominations in the North-West.

“Following an extensive nomination and public voting process, you received the highest number of votes in this award category.

“The Times Heroes Award Council and other key stakeholders subsequently confirmed your selection in recognition of your leadership, public service, and contribution to national development,” Mr. Okusaga said.

Governor Lawal expressed his gratitude to the Board, Management, and Organising Committee of the Daily Times Nigeria @100 Celebration, the Times Heroes Award Council, and all Nigerians who supported his nomination.

He stated that the honour reflects his commitment to promoting good governance and effective public service in Zamfara State.

Other notable Nigerians honoured include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume; and former President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr Akinwumi Adesina.

The newspaper announced that recipients of the DTN@100 Times Heroes Awards will be featured among the most outstanding individuals and institutions in the 700-page Nigerian Grand Book.

"This publication will serve as a national commemorative volume and a lasting record of the people, institutions, and achievements shaping Nigeria’s development."

The foreword of the Nigerian Grand Book has been written by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
