GOV OKPEBHOLO DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY ON EDO PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has declared a State of Emergency on public schools across the State. He said the schools are in very bad shapes.

The Governor, who was accompanied on an inspection tour of some schools in Ikpoba-Okha and Egor Local Governments area of Edo South Senatorial District, lamented the sorry state of facilities in the schools located in urban areas.

Governor Okpebholo expressed displeasure over the state of the schools visited and said “Edo children deserve a better schooling environment that will bring out the best in them.”

He noted that while campaigning for the votes of the electorate in the State, he promised to declare a State of Emergency on schools across Edo State that lack modern facilities and conducive environment for learning.

Governor Okpebholo added that visiting Army Day Secondary School in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area and Evbareke Secondary School in Egor Local Governments Area, he is not pleased with what he saw and has no choice but to begin his action from the schools.

“I feel very bad about the situation of the schools I inspected today. Look at the type of school that our children are attending; it is not acceptable at all.

“When I was campaigning, I told Edo people that I would declare a State of Emergency in our schools across the State. I will start from this school Evbareke secondary School in Egor Local Governments area and the previous one we inspected today, Army Day Secondary School in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, both in Edo South.

“We stopped on the road on our way to the school because erosion has cut off the road. This is not good for our children as we want the best for them.

“From tomorrow, work will commence here as the school visited has no fence, and the road leading to Army Day Secondary School has been washed off by erosion. We must give Edo children quality education to set them for the future.

“The road leading to Army Day Secondary School is known as Boundary Road, off Lucky Way. The road leads to Temboga,” Governor Okpebholo noted.

Edo State Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, said information got to the Ministry on the harsh conditions facing students of the school.

Iyamu said the Governor is visiting schools to see things for himself because he wants to feel the plight of the students and ensure that every Edo child has access to good structure and teachers in their schools.

“The Governor is here this morning to see for himself because he wants to feel the plight of the students of the average Edo child so that together we can all proffer solutions to the problem facing Edo schools. The Governor is here on practical governance to show Edo people they deserve the best.

“The Governor has given us the order to ensure that everybody in Edo State must have access to quality education whether they are able or physically challenged. The challenges are very obvious; dilapidated structures, with no chairs, in schools in urban areas. With the kind of governor Edo has, things will change,” Iyamu said.

Chairman, State Secondary Education Board (SSEB), Omonzane Ebanehita, said Evbareke secondary School does not have a conducive environment for learning.

She noted that the management of the school wrote several letters, which she earlier forwarded to the Governor and appreciated him for visiting the school to find lasting solutions to the problems.

Vice Principal, Students’ Affairs, Evbareke Secondary School, Mrs. Mary Izewingie, said that since 2022, the situation of the school has remained the same. “We have cried out several times, nobody listened to us, and learning has been difficult for our students.

“We even did palliative ourselves, but the rains destroyed our efforts. We approached the Obaseki-led administration. They never responded,” she said.

Governor Okpebholo was taken on an inspection tour of the farm settlement by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Osagie Peter.

Okpebholo, after inspecting the farm, noted that his administration will replicate the farm settlement in Edo Central and Edo North to ensure food sufficiency in the State.

The Governor assured the farmers of support to ensure adequate food production during this year’s farming season.

“We have embarked on our drive to embrace agriculture, which we will use to grow and develop Edo economy. This is the second time I have entered the bush for the purpose of ensuring we produce food for our people. We have cleared large numbers of hectares of land as we are ready to clear more. We will clear about 3,000 hectares as we have embarked on the first stage. We will still have similar farm settlements in Edo Central and Edo North.

This place will be able to accommodate 250 active farm heads, and it will guarantee food security in Edo South and beyond.

“I welcome you to the farm for you to see how far we have gone as there is still some work left in the tractorization before our farmers can come here and we will give them seeds as promised so that they will be able to produce food for the people of Nigeria. PRESIDENT TINUBU FLAGS-OFF BENIN-ASABA HIGHWAY, AS UMAHI HAILS GOV OKPEBHOLO

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Sunday, flagged-off the 125km Benin-Asaba Highway, expected to be completed within 30 months. President Tinubu was represented at the flag-off by the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

At the flag-off, Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi commended the visionary leadership of Governor Okpebholo who he said has turned the State into a construction site in less than 150 days in office.

The Minister used the opportunity to thank President Tinubu for his love for the people of Edo State, saying as a Minister, he has visited the State about three times for action projects.

He also commended Governor Okpebholo who he said has demonstrated love and commitment for his people by embarking on people-oriented projects like the flyover at Ramat Park in Benin City, the state capital.

“In less than 150 days in office, you have turned the entire capital city into a construction site. I commend you very highly for this foresight.

“I am an infrastructure person and when I see good infrastructure going on like the ones going on in Edo State, I feel very happy and commend you for the hardwork.

“We need good infrastructure in this country. Infrastructure is the most important foundation upon which every other programme of the State or country thrives.

“Thank you so much for what you are doing for Edo people. I saw the flyover you are constructing for your people. It is great wisdom. You are not saying this should be done by the Federal Government because we don’t have federal people here in Edo State but you are doing this for the welfare of Edo people.

“You took an oath for the welfare of Edo people and you are doing justice to that, embarking on people-oriented projects that will benefit the people of Edo State.

“The government of Senator Monday Okpebholo is a government of divine inspiration and a government ordained by God. When I see people taking you to court, I say it is because they don’t hear from God because if they do they will know that you are a divine governor.

“Under you, miracles are happening and under you, the road tagged federal roads are now fixed.

“The Federal Ministry of Works has come to Edo State for the third time in less than 100 days not by choice as Mr President directed all these visits. We thank the president for his love.

“This construction is like a cashless programme. We will not see the money but the work will keep going on. We will not be begging for money or quarreling over money issues but checking the projects and there will be results. The credit will always go to Mr president.

“The President is working on several sections of roads across the nation ensuring that the country has good roads and people enjoy and benefit from the dividends of democracy.

“We were here about three weeks ago, appealing to you to intervene on some sections and you did intervene by taking out 23 Km of the road going to Warri for a total contract sum of not less than N40 billion and that work has commenced.

“The President is doing the second section and third section. There are 20 other projects between Delta and Edo States that the president is doing.

“This project is 125 Kilometres by 2, that is 250 kilometres. It is going to have solar lights and the Federal Government is not putting in any money. Private Public Partnership is the way to go,” said Engr. Umahi.

The Minister of finance and coordinating Minister of the economy Wale Edun thanked the president for his foresight in ensuring that the people of Nigeria enjoy good roads across the country assuring the people that the finances for the project is available as such the projects from start to finish is sure.

Governor Okpebholo who represented President Tinubu at the occasion, said the road is a legacy project and Edo State is now becoming like Lagos in terms of infrastructural development.

He thanked the president for the love shown to Edo State under his watch as governor of Edo State, saying the people are now benefiting from the dividends of democracy.

He said: “The President loves Edo State so much so that whenever he sees me, he always asks me about the welfare of Edo people and also that of the Oba of Benin.

“The good things happening in Lagos are now also happening here in Edo State and we have made progress under my watch as governor.”

He assured President Tinubu that Edo people will take his re-election in 2027 as a big deal.

“All the local governments will be delivered for Mr President come 2027 because he has shown the difference. We once had president from this region that never remembered us. Edo is a gateway to the nation and when the roads are bad, the economy of the State will be bad as well.

“What Mr President did in Rivers State is a welcome development to ensure peace in the region. The decision he took is for the best interest of the economy of this nation as the State needed to be protected. The President was proactive and his decision has saved the economy of the nation,” he added.

Okpebholo thanked the president for his vision for the nation, saying the people are enjoying the dividends of democracy following the good initiatives his administration have embarked on.

Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori thanked the president for what he is doing for the people of Edo and Delta States appealing to him to extend the road to Onitsha bridge.

Oborevwori represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme said the road is a critical infrastructure that connects the Eastern and Western regions of Nigeria.

He noted that the road will improve the standard of living of the people urging all to work together to ensure successful completion.

Managing Director, African Plus Partners, Mr Adeniran Ajakaye said from the King square to bypass it will be like a 10-lane carriage way comprising of 5-carriage ways on each side to allow movement faster.

Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Works, Olufunso Adebiyi said the Benin-Asaba Highway corridor is under phase one of highway development initiative.

He noted that the event marks a significant milestone in the president’s renewed hope agenda to improving the road infrastructure and fostering sustainable development.

Adebiyi said the Benin-Asaba Highway is a crucial link between the Southern and Northern region of Nigeria which is vital to trade and other economic activities recognizing that the highway is an essential part of the nation’s economic back bone and has long being in need of urgent rehabilitation and upgrade.

GOV OKPEBHOLO EXCITED, AS WORK ON FIRST FLYOVER BRIDGE IN EDO STATE REACHES ADVANCED STAGE

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed joy over the pace of work at the construction site of the first flyover bridge in Edo State, located at Ramat Park, in Benin City.

The project expected to be completed in 18 months is being executed by the administration of Governor Okpebholo. The project was flagged off in November, 2024, barely one week after Okpebholo assumed office as Governor of Edo State.

The contractor handling the project, Mr. Andy Duan of CCECC told Governor Okpebholo during an unscheduled visit to the site that 20 percent of the project had been done so far.

Duan noted that the construction, which started last year, has reached 20 percent of stage of completion, assuring the people that the company will work according to specifications.

“For this work which commenced in December 2024, we have done seven pillars, underground cross beams and other works are ongoing as we are doing our best to meet up with the construction period,” he stated.

Governor Okpebholo, on his part, said he is not sleeping, as he continues to monitor projects cross the State to ensure the jobs are done according to agreed specifications.

The Governor threatened to revoke contracts whose handlers were not working according to specifications and assured Edo people that under his administration, Edo people would benefit from quality infrastructural development.

“We are not sleeping. We go around the State to monitor all our ongoing projects to ensure quality job delivery. Also, to ensure contractors meet specifications.

“For the Ramat Park flyover, the contractor is doing well, and I am impressed with the speed of the job done so far. If they continue with this kind of speed and pace, I believe they will complete the construction at the stipulated time. The materials like the iron being used and other materials are of high quality and standard.

“Inspecting projects across the State is a way for us to know those who are working and those playing with the projects they were given.

“We have gone to some sites, and we are not happy with what we met as some of these contractors are not meeting our targets and not doing the jobs according to specifications. Such contracts will be revoked.

“As an administration, we want to leave a legacy for our people, and we must ensure that we fulfil all our promises made to Edo people. We will continue to inspect and monitor every project to put contractors on their toes to deliver quality jobs according to specifications for the benefit of Edo people.

“I am not happy with the job of one of the contractors working for us and we will invite him on Monday for a discussion and you may hear bad news because the way they are going is not the way a contract should be executed,” he added.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, John Obanor, who accompanied the Governor on the inspection of the flyover, said the project is on track.

He noted that the job is not being appreciated now by people because it is in its early stage, but sooner than later, as the work progresses, it will be appreciated better. He noted that the company handling the project is doing a good job.

Other road projects inspected by Governor Okpebholo included Uteh Temboga road, open drainage at upper Ekenhua road opposite Nigerian Army cantonment Benin City, Upper Ekenhua road and Catholic Charismatic Renewal road Ugbiyoko.

GOV OKPEBHOLO PREDICTS LANDSLIDE VICTORY FOR TINUBU IN 2027, AS 17 LG CHAIRMEN DUMP PDP FOR APC IN EDO

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has predicted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election with a landslide.

The Governor disclosed this at the New Festival Hall of Government House, Benin City, while addressing chairmen of the 17 local government councils who dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Okpebholo who praised the leadership style of President Tinubu said steps that previous administration were afraid to take that would have put the nation on sound footing for development and growth is what he took by removing the contentious fuel subsidy.

He said his administration is in to develop the State and make the lives of the people better.

The Governor said his administration is ready to work to change the lives of the people for the better, adding that in just four months in office, he and his team have changed the narrative of Edo State.

He said: “I welcome you all our Chairmen who have come to join us, and I praise you for the courage and bravery to leave your party to join the APC. It takes a grounded politician to take this step you have taken today.

“Let me draw your minds back to where we are coming from as an administration. We practically met that Edo was not working when we came into office. What we met in Edo were insecurity, killings, looting Edo treasury using consultants to deceive Edo people and other backward policies implemented by the Obaseki led administration, but we came and changed the narrative.”

The Governor used the occasion to thank a former governor of Edo State and Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; the State chairman of APC, Jarret Tenebe and all members of the APC for their continued support and sacrifices.

He also thanked the councillors who spoke for their various communities through the impeachment exercises in the councils and subsequent election of these new chairmen across the 17 local government areas of Edo State.

“2027 is a reality in Edo State as President Bola Amed Tinubu will continue in office. I charge the 17 of you today that the campaign for the election of President Bola Tinubu has started here today. Go back to your various local governments and erect his bill boards to draw home the message of re-electing President Tinubu.

“There is no vacancy in 2027 in Abuja. Those forming a political party now can’t rule us. They ruled their States and the people suffered from kidnapping, but since they left offices, their States are now free. Such people can’t rule Nigeria,” he declared.

Governor Okpebholo assured the President that Edo is right behind him, predicting a landslide victory in the election as the APC will continue to lead the country.

He said he and his deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa are both committed to the development of Edo State, and his administration has come to rescue the State.

The Governor expressed optimism that leaders of the opposition parties in the State will join the APC fold following his infrastructural development strides in the State.

The party secretary who received the decampees on behalf of the APC, Lawrence Okah thanked the new members, urging them to unite with other members of the party as the administration of Governor Okpebholo has come to rescue the State from retrogression.

“The desire of the governor is to unite the State and ensure the people enjoy the dividends of democracy through his developmental strides,” he said.

Responding on behalf of the Chairmen, the ALGON chairman and chairman of Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State, Hon. Kelvin Iyere thanked the Governor and all APC party faithfuls for accepting them into the fold of the APC.

He noted that they decided to decamp from PDP because of the crisis in their party and their love for the development that Governor Okpebholo has brought to Edo State.

Dignitaries at the event included the Deputy Governor, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Gani Adams, Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, Members of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), serving commissioners, other top government officials and APC party faithful among others.

GOV OKPEBHOLO COMPLETES REMEDIAL WORKS ON 55km BENIN-IRUEKPEN FEDERAL ROAD

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has completed remedial works on the Benin-Iruekpen federal road to make movement easier for motorists.

Okpebholo, who undertook a tour of the expressway from Aduwawa, Obadan junction, Ugha, Okhuo, and Obagie to other areas, expressed satisfaction with the specifications and job done by the contractor who handled the project.

The Governor who spoke to newsmen after the inspection, said his administration acknowledges that federal roads are also used by Edo people and as such his administration will continue to collaborate with the federal government to fix the roads for the benefit of the people of the State.

He said: “You can see what my administration has done in terms of fixing federal roads in the State. Initially, the road was not passable as several accidents were recorded on this road, both small and big vehicles, and lives were lost as well.

“Once upon a time, we had a government in Edo State that used to place signboards across all federal roads with the inscription ‘this is federal road, bear with us’. But today, we know Edo people ply these roads and it is now Edo roads and by the grace of God, we will continue to move forward to see that our people enjoy good roads across the State.

“For me, working for my people is the only thing that can give Edo people happiness and joy. Reducing the time of travel along this road is our achievement. A journey that will take up to four hours is now 45 minutes.

“We have keyed into Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which has given Edo people hope. Hope of progress. With this road, prices of products will go down as the good road will reduce traveling time and positively affect the cost of transporting goods and services.”

The Governor also inspected Ekiuwa University of Benin road (Temboga road extension) Oba Erediuwa road, off upper mission road; Ekiuwa Uteh, Orior-Ozolua, new Uteh road Ekiuwa Quarters.

Gov Okpebholo took time to inspect a massive drainage at Uteh Temboga constructed to channel flood around the area into the Ikpoba River.

Speaking on the strength to continue infrastructural development in Edo State, the Governor said he is not working just for working sake, but working because he wants to improve the lives of Edo people who entrusted him with their mandate to lead them.

“I work because I love my people and want to give them the best. I work because I have a working President who at every point in time asks me about Edo people. I need to show him proof of what I am doing for my people. I want Edo people to know that their votes were worth it, and the only way to pay them back is to work for them and ensure their lives get better,” he stated.

The Governor and his entourage also inspected a gully site at Temboga, which had claimed several houses turning landlords to tenants.

“Looking at this gully here which my administration is trying to address, a lot of work has been done, letting Edo people know especially those living in this area that we love them, appreciate them and will use their resources to better their live,” he said.

The site engineer, Obuh Ugochukwu, said the job of reclaiming land already taken by gully erosion is a difficult one but the Okpebholo administration has addressed it as the gully has been filled making it possible for vehicles to pass through.

“This is Temboga Road by Ekiuwa, Oba Erediuwa road, it’s about 3.9 km, which will get to the back of the University of Benin (UNIBEN). From Ekiuwa, this road will get to Oba Erediuwa, which is 1.2KM. We also have a 3.9 km and another 1.2KM road around this axis.

“This gully erosion site before now was terrible and very scary because of the depth of about 20 metres and was also threatening as people had almost ran away from this area which has been checked through reclaiming of the areas taken by erosion. Those who ran away are all coming back.

“We will soon be done with the filling which is the bulk of the work and we thank you for the opportunity given to us to be part of the success story of saving the people of this area” he said.

The contractor, Engr. Mohld Bajuwa, who spoke on the level of work done on the Benin-Iruekpen road, said work started at Obadan junction, which was experiencing lots of gridlock.

He noted that work was completed at Obadan junction

“The road is of good quality and will stand the test of time, and with His Excellency’s supervision, we have delivered a quality job on time as well.”

PDP’S MISDIRECTION AND IGNORANCE: A CASE OF SPEAKING BEFORE THINKING

It is astonishing how the factional chapter of the caretaker committee of the Peoples Democratic Party and the appointed publicity secretary, Chris Nehikhare, rush to issue statements without first understanding the subject at hand.

Nehikhare’s latest press release is another embarrassing display of ignorance, completely missing the point Governor Monday Okpebholo raised.

The Governor was referring to the $10 million that Godwin Obaseki budgeted for The Observer Newspaper shortly before the 2024 governorship elections in Edo State, not the refurbished equipment bought from ‘Ogbete Market’ in Enugu State.

Obaseki, a portfolio scam artist, who presided over the looting of Edo’s commonwealth, hurriedly siphoned $10 million, using The Observer Newspaper as a conduit, barely a few days to the governorship election in Edo State in late 2024.

Nehikhare’s desperate attempt to twist the conversation is not just misleading but exposes the habitual dishonesty of the PDP.

On the issue of the so-called “sophisticated machines,” Nehikhare conveniently ignores the real concern—these overused and inefficient machines now require billions of naira to function properly. Obaseki may have procured them at a roadside market, but he left behind a financial burden that the present administration must now clean up.

More troubling is Nehikhare’s confused outrage about the sacking of Observer staff. How does he expect those no longer employed to be available at the premises? His logic is as flawed as the policies of the administration he blindly defends.

Instead of this laughable attempt at deflection, Nehikhare should explain why, in his final days, Obaseki found it necessary to allocate a staggering $10 million to a State-owned newspaper that is practically invisible on newspaper stands across the State and country—at a time when critical sectors like education and healthcare remained underfunded.

If Nehikhare wishes to debate the facts, he should do so with accuracy, not fiction. But then again, fiction seems to be the PDP’s favourite tool.
