THE 5TH ASSEMBLY: A CALL TO ACTION

Fellow Youth Leaders, Good morning.

Let me be clear: The 5th Assembly is not "play-play" 😄
This is serious business. This is where decisions that will affect Ikot Ekpene youth
for the next 2 years will be made.

And because it is serious, we must take it seriously.

One thing I want to charge us on today is INCLUSION.
Especially WOMEN INCLUSION.

My people, you know the truth... if you want to reach a man, sometimes you go through a woman 😂
That’s how powerful, influential and strategic our women are.

So why will we joke with 50% of our population?
Governance without women is like soup without salt. It won’t be complete.

That is why I am calling on all our female members:
Don’t wait. Don’t be shy. Step up. Contest. Lead.
The Assembly needs your voice, your wisdom, and your energy.

And to our male members: Support them. Mentor them. Work with them.
Because the future is not for men alone. The future is for BOTH men and women.

I also charge all youth to get involved in leadership training and governance now.
Don’t wait till tomorrow. Start building capacity today.

The 5th Assembly will be remembered as the Assembly that opened doors.
Let’s build together.

ELECTORAL COMMITTEE — 5TH ASSEMBLY
ELECTION GUIDELINES, CODE OF CONDUCT & REQUIREMENTS
For the Conduct of the YAN 5th Assembly Elections
PART I — GENERAL ELECTION GUIDELINES
1. Purpose
These guidelines are issued by the Electoral Committee to ensure that the election into the 5th Assembly of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, is conducted in a transparent, credible, peaceful, orderly and fair manner.
2. Electoral Authority
The Electoral Committee shall be responsible for coordinating and supervising the electoral process, including:
Sale and processing of nomination forms.
Receipt and verification of nomination documents.
Screening of aspirants.
Publication of qualified candidates.
Accreditation of eligible voters and delegates.
Conduct of the election.
Counting and declaration of results.
Handling of electoral complaints in accordance with these guidelines.
3. Levels of Election
Elections shall be conducted at the following levels:
A. State Level
State Speaker
Deputy State Speaker
Other Principal State Officers
B. Local Government Level
Local Government Speaker
Deputy Speaker
Other Principal Officers
C. Ward Level
Ward level election shall be conducted by Local Government election committee and supervised by the State Electoral Committee..
4. Nomination Forms
Every person seeking to contest an elective position shall obtain the appropriate nomination form from the Electoral Committee.
Payment for a nomination form does not automatically qualify an aspirant to contest.
Every aspirant must satisfy the eligibility requirements and successfully complete the screening process.
5. Submission of Forms
All completed nomination forms and supporting documents must be submitted to the Electoral Committee on or before the officially announced deadline.
Late submission shall not be accepted, except where the Electoral Committee officially approves and announces an extension.
6. Screening
All aspirants shall be subject to screening after the close of submission.
The screening process may include:
Verification of information supplied.
Verification of membership status.
Verification of required documents.
Confirmation of eligibility for the position sought.
Review of compliance with YAN rules and electoral guidelines.
Only aspirants who satisfy the screening requirements shall be cleared to contest.
7. Publication of Candidates
The Electoral Committee shall publish or officially communicate the list of screened and qualified candidates before the election.
Any candidate who is not cleared shall be informed of the reason where appropriate.
8. Campaign
Candidates may campaign peacefully after the Electoral Committee announces the commencement of campaign activities.
Campaigns must be based on:
Leadership vision.
Service.
Competence.
Character.
Programmes and policies.
Campaigning must not involve intimidation, harassment, threats, violence, defamation or inducement of voters.
9. Voting
Only persons duly accredited and recognized as eligible voters/delegates under the approved electoral arrangements shall participate in voting.
Each eligible voter shall vote only once for each applicable position.
10. Counting and Declaration
Votes shall be counted transparently in the presence of authorized electoral officials and accredited observers/candidates where applicable.
The candidate who obtains the required highest valid vote shall be declared elected, subject to the applicable electoral rules.
11. Electoral Complaints
Any complaint concerning the election shall be submitted to the Electoral Committee through the prescribed procedure and within the stipulated period.
Complaints should be supported with relevant facts or evidence.
PART II — ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
An aspirant must:
Be a recognized member of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria.
Be eligible to contest the particular office under YAN's applicable rules.
Obtain the appropriate nomination form.
Complete and submit the nomination form correctly.
Provide all required supporting documents.
Pay the approved nomination fee.
Submit the completed form before the deadline.
Attend the screening exercise when invited.
Satisfy the Electoral Committee's screening requirements.
Demonstrate good character and willingness to serve.
Agree to abide by the YAN Constitution, electoral guidelines and Code of Conduct.
Not submit false or misleading information.
PART III — NOMINATION DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS
Each aspirant shall submit the documents specified by the Electoral Committee, which may include:
Completed nomination form.
Recent passport photograph(s).
Proof of payment of nomination fee.
Evidence of YAN membership/participation where required.
Valid means of identification where required.
Letter of acceptance/undertaking to abide by the electoral rules.
Any other document specifically requested by the Electoral Committee.
The Electoral Committee reserves the right to request clarification or additional documentation where necessary for verification.
PART IV — CODE OF CONDUCT FOR ASPIRANTS
Every aspirant shall:
1. Respect Other Aspirants
Aspirants shall respect the dignity, reputation and personal integrity of fellow contestants.
2. Avoid Defamation
No aspirant shall circulate false, malicious or defamatory information about another candidate, electoral officer or YAN official.
3. No Intimidation
No candidate or supporter shall threaten, intimidate, harass or coerce any voter, candidate or electoral official.
4. No Violence
Violence, physical confrontation and threats of violence are strictly prohibited before, during and after the election.
5. No Vote Buying or Inducement
Candidates shall not offer money, gifts, favors or other benefits to influence voters.
6. No Hate Speech
Candidates shall not campaign using language that promotes hatred, discrimination, hostility or division.
7. No Misuse of YAN Property
YAN's official resources, logos, offices or platforms shall not be misused for unauthorized campaign purposes.
8. Responsible Campaigning
All campaign materials must be truthful, decent and respectful.
9. Respect Electoral Officials
Candidates and their supporters shall cooperate with the Electoral Committee and comply with lawful electoral instructions.
10. Acceptance of Results
Candidates are expected to respect the official outcome of the election and use the approved complaint/appeal procedure where they have legitimate concerns.
PART V — PROHIBITED ELECTORAL PRACTICES
The following shall constitute electoral offences:
Submission of forged or false documents.
Impersonation.
Double voting.
Vote buying or voter inducement.
Intimidation of voters.
Threats against candidates or electoral officials.
Disruption of electoral activities.
Fighting or violent conduct.
Deliberate destruction of electoral materials.
Unauthorized alteration or manipulation of electoral materials.
Spreading deliberate false information about the election.
Campaigning outside the period approved by the Electoral Committee.
Unauthorized use of YAN's name, logo or official resources.
Any attempt to compromise the integrity of the electoral process.
PART VI — DISCIPLINARY MEASURES
Depending on the seriousness of an offence, the Electoral Committee may recommend or impose applicable disciplinary measures in accordance with YAN's governing rules, including:
Warning or caution.
Disqualification from a particular electoral activity.
Withdrawal of clearance where eligibility requirements are subsequently found not to have been met.
Referral of serious misconduct to the appropriate YAN authority.
Cancellation or review of an affected electoral process where credible evidence establishes a serious breach.
No disciplinary action should be taken arbitrarily; affected persons should be given an opportunity to respond where appropriate.
PART VII — ELECTORAL TIMELINE
The Electoral Committee shall officially publish the following dates:
Commencement of sale of nomination forms: _25th , August 2026_
Deadline for purchase of forms: 20th, September 2026.
Deadline for submission of completed forms: 23rd September,2026.
Screening exercise: 25th, September 2026
Campaign period: 11 August
24th, September 2026
Ward Election 14th - 17th September 2026.Note Ward elections to be conducted by local government election Committee with full supervision of the State Election Committee,The State committee can only conduct if the local government does not have Electoral committee...
Election date: 25th of September 2026..
Declaration of results: AFTER COMPILATION OF THE RESULTS..
IMPORTANT: The deadline for purchase of nomination forms and the deadline for submission of completed nomination forms should be clearly stated as separate deadlines where applicable.
PART VIII — DECLARATION BY ASPIRANTS
By obtaining and submitting a nomination form, every aspirant shall be deemed to have agreed to:
Abide by the YAN Constitution and applicable rules.
Comply with these Electoral Guidelines.
Observe the Code of Conduct.
Respect the Electoral Committee.
Conduct a peaceful and responsible campaign.
Accept the authority of the Electoral Committee to conduct the election.
Submit genuine and verifiable information.
Respect the final outcome or use the approved complaint/appeal procedure where necessary.
FINAL NOTICE
The Electoral Committee calls upon all aspirants, members, stakeholders and supporters to place the interest of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, above personal interests.
The success of the 5th Assembly election depends on the collective commitment of all participants to peace, fairness, transparency, accountability and responsible leadership.

FEEDBACK: INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2026 - YOUNG CHANGEMAKERS SUMMIT

I am grateful to have represented Akwa Ibom Youth at the Young Changemakers Summit 2026
held today in Abuja, organized by International Alert Nigeria with support from Irish Aid.

Theme: Youth Leadership for Peace, Climate Resilience and Democratic Participation.

The event was insightful and timely. Key takeaways:
1. PEACE: Youth must lead dialogue and conflict prevention in our communities.
2. CLIMATE: Young people are already driving climate action and deserve more tools to scale it.
3. GOVERNANCE: There is an urgent need to include youth in decision-making spaces at all levels.

It was also a great opportunity to:
- Engage the Country Director of International Alert Nigeria, Dr. Kingsley Udo
- Connect with fellow YAN leaders from Bauchi and Cross River
- Interact with representatives from the Federal Ministry of Youth Development
and Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs

As YAN Akwa Ibom, we are bringing these lessons home.
We remain committed to building bridges for peace and creating opportunities for our youths.

Special thanks to International Alert Nigeria and Irish Aid for creating this platform.
We look forward to deeper partnership as we prepare for our YAN Ikot Ekpene Peace Dialogue & Awards this September.

YAN AKWA IBOM PARTICIPATES IN INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2026 SUMMIT IN ABUJA

Abuja, 14th August 2026 - The Speaker of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Ikot Ekpene Chapter,
Hon. Ineme Dianabasi Jeremiah, today represented Akwa Ibom Youth at the International Youth Day 2026
“Young Changemakers Summit” organized by International Alert Nigeria in partnership with Irish Aid.

The event, held at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja, had the theme:
“Youth Leadership for Peace, Climate Resilience and Democratic Participation”

YAN Akwa Ibom was in attendance following our ongoing partnership with International Alert Nigeria
towards our upcoming “Peace Dialogue & Awards 2026” scheduled for September in Ikot Ekpene.

Highlights of the Summit:
1. Engagement with the Country Director of International Alert Nigeria, Dr. Kingsley Udo,
and technical team on youth-led peacebuilding and climate action.
2. Networking with fellow YAN leaders from Bauchi and Cross River State Chapters.
3. Interactions with representatives from the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and
the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction on opportunities
for youth empowerment and inclusion.
4. Dialogue on moving from training to tools, and from dialogue to action for Nigerian youth.

Speaking at the event, the Speaker reaffirmed YAN Akwa Ibom’s commitment to building bridges
for peace, climate resilience and inclusive governance in our communities.
He also used the opportunity to advocate for increased support and inclusion of young people
in decision-making at all levels.

The Youth Assembly of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Chapter appreciates International Alert Nigeria
for the invitation and for creating platforms that amplify youth voices.

IKOT EKPENE & IBESIKPO ASUTAN CHAPTERS.

The VSTP Training has successfully ended today.
We sincerely appreciate His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,
the Federal Government, N-SIPA, and especially Dr. Kingsley Udo,
Country Director, International Alert, for facilitating this opportunity.

YAN Ikot Ekpene and YAN Ibesikpo were direct beneficiaries and our youths
have been equipped with practical vocational skills.

We hereby apply for the next phase of support - tools, starter packs, and
linkage to markets/empowerment grants so our beneficiaries can start work immediately.

We are ready to partner with Government to monitor, mentor and ensure
these skills translate to jobs and businesses in our communities.
