AE-FUNAI VC READS RIOT ACT TO DEANS OVER EXTORTION, SEXUAL HARASSMENT, INDECENT DRESSING, OTHERS

The Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, has warned the newly elected Deans of Faculties against extortion (“sorting”), sexual harassment, indecent dressing, indiscipline and other forms of unethical behaviours capable of undermining the integrity of the university.

Prof. Nwachukwu gave the stern warning during the first meeting of the Committee of Deans held on Wednesday, 19th August, 2026, at the Council chamber where he congratulated the Deans on their election, charging them to uphold the laws guiding the university to promote excellence, integrity and inclusivity in the institution.

He expressed concern over the high rate of indiscipline among some members of staff and students, decrying the alleged incidences of extortion (sorting) and sexual harassment of students by some corrupt academic staff.

He urged the Deans to take responsibility for maintaining discipline in their faculties and ensure that members of staff operate within the ambit of the rules and regulations guiding the university, stressing that any staff caught taking undue advantage of students or found wanting in the discharge of their official responsibility will face the full weight of the law.

Prof. Nwachukwu described the election of the Deans as a new beginning meant to promote institutional growth, democratic culture and ideals in the university, and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them through effective leadership and commitment to their responsibilities, adding that his vision for the university is anchored on integrity, excellence and inclusivity.

"As Deans, you are the Vice-Chancellor's representatives at the faculties, so you have to act with a high level of integrity. Your actions must be guided by the extant rules and regulations of the university

"Lead with dignity, integrity, and instill the culture of excellence in your respective faculties in order to enhance the standard of the university. The era of indiscipline, extortion, sexual harassment, indecent dressing, and other unethical and exploitative behaviours is over", he said.

He charged the Deans to ensure that the departments, staff and students under their faculties imbibe and abide by the new culture, as his administration will not tolerate deviant behaviour among staff and students.

The Vice-Chancellor finally noted that universities are run through committees, describing the Committee of Deans as a vital instrument through which the institution carries out its functions, while urging them to work collaboratively with his administration to promote discipline, excellence, integrity among staff and students for the overall development of AE-FUNAI.

AE-FUNAI Academic Traces Modern Metabolic Diseases to Biafran War-Era Starvation

A Professor of Medical Biochemistry at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Prof. Chukwunonso E.C.C. Ejike, has identified starvation experienced during the Biafran War as a major factor contributing to the increasing burden of metabolic diseases among survivors and their descendants.

Speaking during the University's 9th Inaugural Lecture titled, Legacies of the Biafran Famine: Is the Metabolic Syndrome the Canary in the Coal Mine?, Prof. Ejike said prolonged famine during the Nigerian Civil War left permanent biological changes, which he described as "metabolic scars," predisposing affected individuals to obesity, diabetes, hypertension and other metabolic disorders later in life.

He noted that starvation forces the human body to adapt to severe nutritional deprivation, especially during pregnancy and early childhood, adding that although such adaptations enable survival during famine, they become harmful when individuals later live in environments where food is abundant, increasing their risk of chronic diseases.

Drawing on the Barker Hypothesis and the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease theory, Prof. Ejike explained that malnutrition in the womb and during childhood programmes the body's metabolism, with the effects extending beyond one generation. He said that a pregnant woman exposed to starvation could simultaneously affect herself, her unborn daughter and her future grandchildren because the unborn female child already carries the cells that will produce her own offspring.

The inaugual lecturer traced the historical events that culminated in the Nigerian Civil War, recalling the January 1966 military coup, the July counter-coup, the killings that followed and the declaration of the Republic of Biafra on May 30, 1967. He noted that the blockade imposed during the 30-month war resulted in widespread food shortages, lack of medicines and severe malnutrition across the former Eastern Region.

Prof. Ejike observed that while images of children suffering from kwashiorkor and malnutrition remain powerful reminders of the humanitarian crisis, the long-term biological consequences of famine have received far less attention. He argued that these hidden effects continue to manifest through increasing cases of metabolic syndrome decades after the war.

Describing metabolic syndrome as a cluster of related health conditions, he identified its major components as abdominal obesity, abnormal blood lipids, elevated blood pressure and high blood glucose, noting that the presence of multiple risk factors significantly increases the likelihood of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Presenting findings from his research, the Professor of Medical Biochemistry disclosed that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among adults in the local population ranges between 7.5 and 30.7 per cent. He said his research team has continued to investigate the syndrome and its individual components to better understand its causes and implications for public health.

He described biochemistry as the science that investigates the chemical basis of life and highlights its contributions to medicine and agriculture, including vaccine development and the production of disease-resistant crops.

In his recommendation, Prof. Ejike advised individuals who suffered from the Biafran famine or the descendants of that famished population should be aware of their heightened Metabolic health risks and take proactive steps towards having a handle on the modifiable risk factors. Encouraging such individuals to eat healthy diets exercise regularly avoid to***co use and alcohol abuse, among others, to live a healthy life.

He further urged Universities to prioritize funding research that responds to national challenges noting that institutions reluctant to do so should reassess their mandate.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Vice- Chancellor of the university, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu who was represented by the University Librarian, Prof. Julianna Akidi said that Inaugural lecture is one of the highest academic traditions in the University system, noting that it provides professors the opportunity to showcase the results of years of research, contribute to knowledge and inspire both scholars and students.

He promised to accelerate the pace of inaugural lectures in the university, decrying that valuable research findings cannot remain within our classrooms and offices.

AE-FUNAI ALUMNI RETURN TO VARSITY, INVEST IN NEXT GENERATION

Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi state on Friday received a powerful homecoming as some members of the AE-FUNAI Alumni Association returned to campus not just to reminisce, but to reinvest in the future of the institution that shaped them.

Led by Dr. Chukwuemeka Oko-Otu, a graduate of History and Strategic Studies, the delegation of accomplished graduates, donated books, engaged final-year students in a high-impact mentorship and pledged long-term support to their alma mater aimed at raising academic standards, instilling discipline, and reinforcing the culture of giving back.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Oko-Otu challenged students to see their university years as the foundation for national impact.
“Hard work, discipline, and integrity are not optional. They are the currency with which you will buy your future.

Today, AE-FUNAI graduates are excelling in medicine, engineering, law, business, public service, and academia across Nigeria and beyond. That same path is open to you”, he stated.

Beyond the donation, the Dr. Oko-Otu who is a Visiting Research Fellow, Oxford University, United Kingdom unveiled a roadmap for sustained engagement: structured mentorship programmes, career guidance and industry linkages to bridge the gap between classroom and workplace, and yearly endowment of N200, 000 to support the graduating student with the best thesis in History & Strategic Studies, while Kelechi Agwu Azuanya, a Partnership Advisor at NNPC Energy Services (EnServ) and Francis Egede, an Energy Management, Contracts and Procurement Expert, pledged a yearly
endowment of N200, 000 each to support the graduating student with the best thesis in Computer Science.

“We are not just giving books today. We are making a covenant to build AE-FUNAI into a university whose graduates define excellence. Our endowments start with time, talent, and treasure. We call on every AE-FUNAI graduate, home and abroad, to join this movement”, he concluded.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Dr. Celestine Afiukwa commended the alumni for their vision. He urged students to remain focused, uphold good character, and seize every opportunity the university provides.

“This gesture proves that AE-FUNAI is producing graduates who are not only doing well, but are also willing to lift others as they rise,” Dr. Afiukwa said.

NUC, TETFUND DRIVE ENTRPRENURSHIP EDUCATION REFORM AS AE-FUNAI TRAINS ACADEMIC STAFF ON EFFECTUATION

In line with its commitment to fostering innovation, employability, and entrepreneurial capacity among graduates, The National Universities Commission (NUC), with the support of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, (TETFUND) and Garthee Enterprise Trust Limited, (GETrust), has organized a 3-day intensive training programme on “Teaching Entrepreneurship Using Effectuation” for academic staff of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AEFUNAI), Ebonyi State.

The programme explores contemporary pedagogical approaches to entrepreneurship education, with emphasis on teaching non-business students and integrating the globally acclaimed “Effectuation” methodology into classroom practice, geared towards equipping lecturers with innovative pedagogical approaches for developing entrepreneurial mindsets among students.

The training held at the University's E-Library from July 13 to 15, 2026, forms part of ongoing efforts by the National Universities Commission to reposition entrepreneurship education in Nigerian universities from a predominantly theoretical discipline to a practical, innovation-driven and solution-oriented field capable of producing job creators rather than job seekers.

Declaring the training open, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, represented by the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Amobi Ekwe said the training comes at a critical time when universities are expected not only to impart knowledge but also to equip students with the skills, mindset, and competences required to thrive in an increasingly dynamic and competitive world, stressing that entrepreneurship education has become a vital tool for fostering innovation, creativity, resilience, and self-reliance.

He described the programme as timely and strategic in addressing Nigeria's growing unemployment challenge and the need for universities to produce graduates equipped with entrepreneurial competencies.
He noted that entrepreneurship education has become an indispensable component of higher education globally; stressing that university must go beyond traditional classroom instructions to cultivate creativity, innovation, resilience and problem-solving skills among students.

While commending the NUC, TETFund and GETrust for initiating the programme, the Vice-Chancellor urged participants to take full advantage of the training by actively engaging with facilitators and adopting innovative teaching methodologies that would inspire students to identify opportunities, create value and contribute meaningfully to national development.

He also recognized the strategic importance of the programme in advancing the University’s commitment to quality teaching, and successful implementation of the entrepreneurship components of the CCMAS, noting that the introduction of entrepreneurship studies across disciplines represents a deliberate effort to ensure that graduates possess not only academic knowledge but also practical competencies required in a dynamic global economy.

He added that the programme would help lecturers understand modern approaches to entrepreneurship instruction and assessment, particularly for students whose primary disciplines are outside business and management studies.

Speaking during the programme, the Director Centre for Entrepreneurship and Employability, Prof. Emmanuel Nweze stressed the need for a paradigm shift in the teaching of entrepreneurship, noting that entrepreneurship should be viewed as a process of developing attitudes, behaviors and competencies that enable individuals to recognize opportunities and create solutions to societal problems.

The training sessions featured, Professor, Nasir Abdullahi and Dr. M. I Aminu, who explained that students from disciplines such as engineering, agriculture, medicine, education, humanities and the natural sciences often possess technical expertise but may lack entrepreneurial awareness but, the training affords lecturers the opportunity to design learning experiences that connect entrepreneurial concepts to students' respective disciplines.

Highlighting the Key pedagogical strategies to include: Experiential learning; project-based instruction; case studies and simulations; problem-solving exercises; industry engagement; mentorship programmes; reflective learning practices; and collaborative innovation projects.

He maintained that effective entrepreneurship teaching requires lecturers to serve as facilitators of learning rather than mere transmitters of knowledge.

Professor Aminu further pointed out the Core Effectuation Principles to include; Bird-in-Hand, Affordable Loss, Crazy Quilt, Lemonade and Plot in the Plane Principles as principles when integrated into classroom would help students develop entrepreneurial confidence, adaptability and resilience.

The training concluded with an interactive quiz session that encouraged active participation, reinforced key concepts of entrepreneurship and effectuation, and provided participants with an opportunity to assess their understanding of the lessons learned.

PRO-CHANCELLOR INAUGURATES AE-FUNAI COLLEGE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES BOARD IN LANDMARK MOVE

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, AE-FUNAI, Engr. Dr. Anthony Nebo, has inaugurated the maiden Governing Board of the University’s College of Medical Sciences.

The inauguration marks a historic milestone, being the first time the College, established about 9 years ago, will operate with a dedicated Board to provide strategic oversight.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Nebo commended the Vice-Chancellor for his foresight in initiating the process. He reaffirmed Council’s commitment to providing full support to ensure the College attains its mandate of excellence in medical training, research, and service delivery.

“The Board is expected to work assiduously to elevate the College of Medical Sciences to enviable heights and position it as a center of excellence,” the Pro-Chancellor stated.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, described the inauguration as “historic and long overdue.”

He noted that upon assumption of office, he observed an over-centralization of administrative powers in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, which slowed decision-making.

“To build a more proactive, resilient, and efficient university, we have begun the deliberate process of decentralization. The inauguration of this Board is a key part of that reform,” Professor Nwachukwu said.

The Vice-Chancellor further explained that granting the College a measure of semi-autonomy will enable the Board to directly oversee its academic, administrative, and financial activities, and ensure the College meets its academic goals without unnecessary recourse to Central Administration.

“With this Board in place, the College can now stand on its own and address its challenges more effectively,” he added.

The College of Medical Sciences Board is composed of the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of Governing Council as the Chairman. Other Members include Vice-Chancellor, Provost, Deputy Provost, Chief Medical Director of the Teaching Hospital, All Deans of College Faculties, Nominee of Governing Council, Nominee of College Academic Board, Financial Controller (not below the rank of Deputy Bursar) and College Secretary (who will serve as secretary).

AE-FUNAI STRENGTHENS STUDENTS, PROPERTY RISKS MANAGEMENT WITH DUAL INSURANCE AGREEMENTS

Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State has taken a major step towards safeguarding the welfare of its students and protecting its infrastructure by signing two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Laudable Insurance Brokers Limited on a Students' Personal Accident Insurance Scheme and a Combined Risk Insurance Policy.

The agreements, signed at the Vice-Chancellor’s conference room, were designed to provide financial compensation to students and their families in the event of an accident involving any student leading to injuries, permanent disability and death, and covering burial expenses while also protecting the institution's buildings and other assets against losses arising from fire, windstorms and other unforeseen disasters.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, said the initiative underscores the university's commitment to prioritizing students' safety and welfare, and also complying with the Federal Government's directive on insuring strategic public assets. He noted that the decision became imperative following a series of fatal road accidents involving students, particularly around the university's first gate.

"Just recently, many of us are aware that many of our students were involved in accidents. Some of them were killed while others were seriously injured. A few weeks ago, two or three students lost their lives. If this insurance arrangement had already been in place, their families would have started receiving compensation," the Vice-Chancellor said, describing the recurring accidents around the university entrance as a source of concern.

While expressing hope that such tragedies would not recur, Prof. Nwachukwu stressed that insurance remains an important risk management tool that cushions the financial burden associated with unexpected events.

"Insurance cannot replace a lost life, but it provides support for those left behind. It is about preparing for uncertainties and ensuring that families are not left without assistance when unfortunate incidents occur," he stated.

Prof. Nwachukwu further disclosed that the Federal Government had directed public institutions to insure their facilities, adding that AE-FUNAI's decision aligns with that policy while strengthening the university's capacity to recover quickly from unforeseen losses.

He added that the Combined Risk Insurance Policy would also cover the university's physical assets against damage resulting from fire and natural disasters, including windstorms that have, on several occasions, destroyed rooftops of many campus buildings.

Speaking further, the Vice-Chancellor said the university chose Laudable Insurance Brokers Limited after carefully assessing several insurance providers and considering the company's track record of professionalism, integrity and prompt settlement of claims. He observed that many Nigerians remain skeptical about insurance because some companies fail to honour genuine claims, expressing confidence that Laudable Insurance Brokers Limited would uphold its obligations to the university.

"We believe this will be a mutually beneficial relationship. While the company provides protection for our students and properties, the university will also fulfill its obligations under the agreement," he concluded.

In his remarks, the Managing Director, Laudable Insurance Brokers Limited, Sam Enyili Ude thanked the University management for the Confidence reposed in the company. He recalled presenting the institution's insurance risk profile on May 8, 2026, describing the signing of the two MoUs as the culmination of months of productive engagement.

He assured the University of the Company’s readiness to deliver quality insurance services and honour every legitimate obligation arising from the agreements.

The ceremony concluded with the formal signing of the two MoUs, marking the commencement of a comprehensive insurance programme expected to enhance student welfare, strengthen institutional resilience and provide greater financial security for AE-FUNAI in the face of unforeseen risks.

AE-FUNAI HISTORY DEPARTMENT HOSTS 1ST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NIGERIA’S SECURITY AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Department of History and Strategic Studies, Faculty of Arts, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, has successfully hosted its maiden International Hybrid Conference.

Themed "Nigeria's Security Dilemma and National Development: Reflections on Policy Missteps, Achievements and Their Domestic and International Implications", the conference brought together scholars, security experts, policymakers, students, and development practitioners to interrogate Nigeria’s security challenges and chart pathways for sustainable national development.

Declaring the conference open, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Professor Romanus Ejiaga, described the theme as timely. He noted that national development cannot thrive where lives and property are insecure, and urged participants to move beyond theory to propose actionable strategies for breaking Nigeria’s cycle of insecurity.

In his keynote address titled "Nigeria’s Security Dilemma: Historical Roots, Present Crises, And the International Stakes of a Nation at the Crossroads", Professor Bright Alozie of Portland State University, USA, represented by Professor Donatus Ajaegbo of AE-FUNAI, traced contemporary insecurity to Nigeria’s colonial legacy, weak institutions, corruption, poverty, unemployment, and poor governance.

He stressed that military solutions alone are insufficient and advocated a multidimensional approach anchored on good governance, economic empowerment, youth development, intelligence reform, and stronger collaboration between government, academia, traditional institutions, and civil society.

He further highlighted the regional and global implications of Nigeria’s instability for West Africa’s security architecture.

Also speaking, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Arua Oko Omaka, commended the department for its academic vision and noted that the conference speaks directly to one of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.
“Where insecurity persists, development suffers; where peace and security flourish, societies thrive,” he stated.

The Head of Department, Dr. Jude Eke, in his welcome address, said the conference was designed to fuse historical analysis, policy critique, and strategic foresight to inform national progress. He emphasized that security extends beyond the absence of conflict to include justice, good governance, and social inclusion.

PRESIDENT AE-FUNAI WOMEN ASSOCIATION, FACULTY OF LAW ADVANCE UNIVERSITY’S GREEN AGENDA WITH MAJOR TREE-PLANTING DRIVE

The President of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Women Association (AE-FUNAI WA), Dr. Nkiru Nwachukwu and the Faculty of Law, have reaffirmed the University’s commitment to environmental sustainability with a large-scale tree-planting exercise held on campus.

The initiative aligns with AE-FUNAI’s Green Initiative, a strategic programme designed to deliver a cleaner, healthier, and more climate-resilient campus.

Leading the exercise, President of AE-FUNAI WA, Dr. Nwachukwu, said the campaign was aimed at beautifying the university environment and actively combating climate change.

"Over 40 seedlings of royal palm, queen palm, Philippine palm, araucaria, and golden pandanus were planted across strategic locations, from the University’s Main Gate to the Senate Building to beautify the campus and combat climate change, and promote environmental sustainability", she said.

At the Faculty of Law, Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Eseni Azu Udu, described the exercise as a demonstration of the Faculty’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility.

“Trees are essential to human survival. They purify the air, mitigate climate change, and enhance our learning environment. This must not be a one-off event. Planting is only the beginning. Nurturing these trees is our collective responsibility and a legacy for generations to come”, he said.

Also speaking, Director of the University Green Initiative, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwu, commended the Faculty of Law for its leadership. He noted that the Green Initiative seeks to raise environmental awareness and mobilize every faculty and department to take ownership of the University’s ecosystem.

“Tree planting remains one of the most effective tools to fight climate change, improve biodiversity, and create a healthier environment for teaching and research. We call on all faculties to embrace this movement. Our future depends on the actions we take today”, he stated.

The exercise underscores AE-FUNAI’s ongoing drive to integrate climate-conscious practices into academic life and campus operations, as the University positions itself as a model green campus in Nigeria.
