ELECHI DRUMS SUPPORT FOR PEACEFUL RESETTLEMENT, COMPENSATION OF AE-FUNAI CAMPUS OCCUPANTS

The former Governor of Ebonyi state, Chief Martin Nwanchor Elechi has called for a peaceful resettlement and compensation of the land owners still residing within the campus of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, for the overall development of the university and its host communities.

Elechi made the call yesterday when the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, led members of the university management on a courtesy call at his residence, when the Vice-Chancellor sought the intervention of the former Governor in resolving the issue of original landowners residing within the university’s premises.

Prof. Nwachukwu, made the move as part of his administration’s efforts to create room for a peaceful and mutual-benefitting relationship with the university’s host communities, through dialogue and consultation for the overall development of the university.

Since assuming office, the Vice-Chancellor has embarked on consultations with relevant stakeholders on the issue, stressing the need for a mutually acceptable arrangement for the relocation of the original landowners. The engagement became necessary because the continued presence of the occupants within of the university’s campus has implications for the institution’s expansion and development.

His consultation with Chief Elechi was therefore aimed at leveraging the former governor’s experience, influence and knowledge of the state to facilitate discussions with the present Governor, RT Hon. Bldr. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru on how the affected landowners could be relocated in a peaceful and acceptable manner.

He explained that the university was not seeking a confrontational approach to the matter, but rather a solution that would take into consideration the interests of the affected landowners while also enabling the institution to utilize its land for further infrastructural development, adding that stakeholder engagement remained central to his administration’s approach to resolving issues affecting the university and its host communities.

Responding, the former Governor expressed appreciation for the opportunity to reflect on the period, stressing that his administration made deliberate efforts to promote rural development and secure land for public projects while balancing the interest of the people who owned the land, even as he promised to reach out to the Ebonyi State Governor in resolving the issue amicably.

The engagement with Chief Elechi forms part of the broader efforts by the Nwachukwu administration to strengthen cordial relationship with stakeholders and address community-related challenges through consultation and peaceful resolution.

AE-FUNAI FINE AND APPLIED ARTS GRADUATING STUDENTS DAZZLE AT 2025/2026 FINAL-YEAR ARTS EXHIBITION

The Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, has unveiled its 2025/2026 Final-Year Arts Exhibition, a compelling showcase of practical research projects by the graduating class.

The exhibition, which was opened to the university community and the general public, presented a vibrant collection of works spanning Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics, Graphics, Textiles, and Mixed-Media. The pieces interrogate pressing and timeless themes including identity, cultural heritage, environmental sustainability, technology, and contemporary Nigerian realities.

Each work on display was the outcome of a rigorous academic and studio-based research journey - from problem identification and field investigation to concept development, material experimentation, and final ex*****on.

In his assessment, the External Examiner, Prof. Chijioke Noel Onuora of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), commended the intellectual depth and practical relevance of the students' projects.

He particularly lauded the students' commitment to the fundamentals of studio practice, emphasizing the critical place of drawing in artistic development. According to him, strong artistic output is anchored on iterative sketching and conceptual exploration, rather than premature fixation on a single idea.

"Students must learn to generate multiple preliminary sketches to interrogate a concept from different perspectives before arriving at the most expressive resolution. This process allows an idea to be nurtured and refined, not lost," Prof. Onuora stated.

He described drawing as the bedrock of all visual art practice - a vital tool for documentation, communication, and self-expression, through which ideas are preserved before being translated into finished works in various media.

He further expressed satisfaction with the graduating students for effectively demonstrating this iterative methodology, noting that the quality of works exhibited reflects both creative maturity and research diligence.

The Head of Department, Fine and Applied Arts, Dr. Job Ukwa appreciated the University Management led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, the project supervisors, studio instructors and all academic staff for their unwavering support and mentorship to the graduating class.

NUJ HONORS AE-FUNAI VC WITH AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION LEADERSHIP

The leadership accomplishments of Professor Daniel C. Nwachukwu, the Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State (AE-FUNAI), came to the fore yesterday as he was recognized with an Award of Excellence in Education Leadership by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council.

Prof. Nwachukwu was honoured for his significant contributions to the advancement of education and effective institutional leadership in the Nigerian University system spanning over 26 years. The award was presented to him at the NUJ, Ebonyi State Council's 2026 Press Week held at ReMeritona Hotel and Suites, Abakaliki.

The award highlights the growing acknowledgment of Prof. Nwachukwu's efforts towards strengthening academic excellence, institutional development, innovation, and effective administration at AE-FUNAI and beyond. Since assuming office, he has placed a strong emphasis on purposeful and ethical leadership, collective responsibility, and the repositioning of AE-FUNAI as a research-driven and globally-competitive institution.

AE-FUNAI THEATRE ARTS STUDENTS SHOWCASE CARNIVAL ARTS TO PROMOTE NIGERIAN CULTURE, EMPLOYABILITY

Students of Theatre Arts, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ebonyi State (AEFUNAI), recently highlighted its Carnival Arts course, “Introduction to Carnival Arts,” through a vibrant parade featuring students in colorful, self-made traditional costumes that depicted the different tribes and tongues in the countryt. This initiative aims to promote cultural preservation and develop entrepreneurial and employability skills among students.

The course, a longstanding part of the department’s curriculum, exposes 300 level students to various areas of life, including costume-making, choreography, make-up artistry, and carnival business. It equips them with practical skills for self-employment after graduation.

Dr. Ekuwe Ruth Epochi-Olise, the Head of the Department, emphasized the importance of the Carnival Arts course, stating that it has always been a significant part of their offerings that adds vibrancy to the campus. She reminisced about her first time overseeing the course in 2020 when students wore traditional African attires for their presentations.

She noted that a recent course in theatre entrepreneurship reinforced her belief that theatre studies provide excellent prospects for self-reliance. She observed that students personally sourced and purchased the costume materials, created the outfits themselves, and applied their own make-up, developing skills that many have successfully turned into income-generating ventures.

The theatre professional further noted that students who were not directly involved in the course are inspired by their peers, many of whom aspire to replicate similar carnival initiatives in their home communities during the yuletide period, a time when many people return to their villages.

Drawing on the example of the annual Calabar Carnival, she encouraged students to bring the concept back home and use it as a means to earn a living during the festive season.
Dr. Casmir Oyamuchara, the course lecturer of Carnival Arts, stated that the course is part of a larger departmental effort to prepare students for self-employment rather than relying on white-collar jobs. He explained that graduates from the program are well-equipped to provide services in custom-made costumes, choreography, and carnival arts packaging, describing carnival arts as a viable and burgeoning industry in Nigeria and globally.

Oyamuchara, who doubles as a practicing dancer with a PhD in Dance Studies, emphasized the department’s philosophy of training students to create jobs and employ others rather than merely seeking employment. He pointed out various career paths available to theatre graduates, including fashion design, choreography, directing, and carnival arts, and noted the growing number of self-employed alumni from the department.

Kindness Ebere, a third-year student who participated in the showpiece, shared her thoughts on what the course and the carnival tradition mean to her. She highlighted the carnival's role in preserving culture and raising awareness of their production. She remarked that the carnival practice helps preserve and promote the ethnic cultures while creating public awareness around indigenous traditions.

Nwani Bright, another third-year student, noted that traditional attire is often not seen outside described the initiative as a way of using traditional dress, sometimes blended with contemporary Western styles, in a concept he referred to as "hybridity," to keep culture visible and relevant.

Chukwujekwu Chinaza, also a third-year student, noted that his goal was to raise awareness and to promote cultures that are indigenous to Nigeria, stressing the need for the preservation of traditions from extinction.

Ogayi Chisom Joshua, another participant, described the exercise as a demonstration of students' creativity in using color and materials to represent culture. He noted that theatre students are adept at blending local fabrics into bright, colorful designs, allowing them to showcase talents and cultures often underrepresented in broader society. He regarded the course as a valuable and important part of the curriculum.

AE-FUNAI TO PROVIDE LABORATORY SUPPORT SERVICES TO EUSTON UNIVERSITY FOR STUDENTS’ PRE-CLINICAL, CLINICAL TRAINING

Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Euston University, Abakaliki for the provision of laboratory support services for the pre-clinical and clinical training of students of Allied Health Sciences of the newly-established private university. This agreement allows Euston University to utilize AE-FUNAI's laboratories for the pre-clinical and clinical training of its nursing students.

During the signing ceremony held at the Vice-Chancellor’s office on Tuesday, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, emphasized that the university has established a reputation for excellence and integrity, which continues to drive its ambition to become one of the leading institutions in the country.

He noted that this partnership offers AE-FUNAI an opportunity to share its high standards with other institutions. He highlighted that the university's laboratories and facilities have been developed to adequately support the practical training needs of partner institutions' students.

Prof. Nwachukwu noted that Euston University's decision to collaborate with AE-FUNAI validates its reputation in academic and health sciences training. He assured that AE-FUNAI would provide the necessary support to ensure that Euston's students fully benefit from this partnership, and expressed the university's openness to similar collaborations that advance quality education and manpower development.

AE-FUNAI VC FORGES STRONGER BOND WITH ECHARA NKPOKE KINGDOM, PLEDGES SHARED DEVELOPMENT

The Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to building and sustaining a strong, mutually beneficial and lasting relationship with Echara Nkpoke Kingdom, one of the host communities of the institution.

Prof. Nwachukwu gave the assurance when he led members of the University Management team on a courtesy visit to the palace of His Royal Highness, the Nkpoke I of Echara Nkpoke Kingdom, Eze Pius Igwe, in Ndufu-Echara autonomous community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The Vice-Chancellor described the establishment of AE-FUNAI in the area as a blessing and a unique opportunity for the people, noting that the presence of the institution would continue to open doors for young people to access quality education and create opportunities capable of transforming the social and economic life of the host communities.

He stressed that his administration places great importance on peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding between the University and its host communities, describing such partnership as fundamental to sustainable growth and development.

Prof. Nwachukwu further disclosed that the University's Department of Agriculture would extend its expertise and services to farmers in the community. MULTILINGUALISM, FUNCTIONAL LITERACY KEY TO EMPLOYABILITY, SAYS AE-FUNAI PROFESSOR AT 10TH INAUGURAL LECTURE

A Professor of Foreign Languages at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Prof. Nnenna Nwosu-Nworuh, has described multilingualism and functional literacy as blended skills essentialfor enhancing employability, effective communication and national development.
Nwosu-Nworuh stated this on Thursday, September 3, 2026, while delivering the university’s 10th Inaugural Lecture titled “Multilingualism and Functional Literacy: Hard, Soft or Blended Skills?” at the university’s Senate Chamber.

She explained that language combines the technical and measurable attributes of hard skills with interpersonal abilities such as communication, empathy, adaptability and cultural competence, adding that proficiency in another language is teachable and testable like a hard skill, but its effective application depends on human interaction, making it a blended skill.

The inaugural lecturer defined functional literacy as the ability to acquire sufficient reading, writing and numeracy skills to function effectively in society, noting that these skills enable individuals to function effectively in society. She advocated the adoption of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as a model for assessing proficiency in Nigerian languages.

According to her, the standardized proficiency framework would help improve language teaching, assessment and certification while strengthening the employability of multilingual graduates.

Nwosu-Nworuh also highlighted the Linguascript project, an initiative aimed at improving digital representation of major Nigerian languages by developing keyboards that support Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba, stressing that the initiative would encourage writing in indigenous languages, promote their use in digital spaces and contribute to their modernization and preservation.

She urged parents, teachers and counsellors to identify students’ interests and strengths early and guide them towards disciplines that match their abilities rather than relying solely on examination performance, while calling on government and educational institutions to strengthen language programmes, introduce proficiency-based curricula, expand language immersion opportunities and support the development of indigenous-language digital tools.

She further advocated greater collaboration between universities and French organizations to create opportunities for students to gain practical language experience and improve their career prospects.

The professor concluded that competence should be understood as the ability to apply knowledge and skills effectively to real-life situations, reiterating that multilingualism and functional literacy remain important tools for education, employment, communication and national development. She attributed that her journey into French language studies was shaped by personal experiences and a family aspiration for educational advancement, confirming that her academic career demonstrated the value of identifying and developing individual strengths.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, described the lecture as timely, saying the university’s mandate goes beyond awarding degrees to producing graduates who are educated, functional, critical thinkers and capable of communicating and solving problems in multiple contexts and languages.

Nwachukwu stressed that “literacy without application is empty, and multilingualism without purpose is noise,” adding that AE-FUNAI is committed to an education the blends intellect with relevance, and scholarship with service to the society.

He urged academics and students to draw useful lessons from the lecture to improve policies and practices, even as he promised to accelerate the pace of inaugural lectures in the university to 50 before the end of the year.

AE-FUNAI VC CHARGES POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS TO UPHOLD ACADEMIC INTEGRITY, ETHICS

The School of Postgraduate Studies, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, has inducted its newly admitted students for the 2025/2026 academic session with a strong call to uphold academic integrity, ethics, discipline, and responsible use of technology in research.

The orientation programme, held on Tuesday, brought together the institution’s principal officers, senior academics, and new postgraduate students for a day of mentorship, policy briefing, and ethical formation aimed at preparing them for the rigours of advanced scholarship.

Declaring the orientation open, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, described postgraduate study as a journey that demands discipline, diligence, and strict adherence to institutional rules and regulations.

“The guidance you receive today will shape your success throughout your programme. Discipline and respect for due process are non-negotiable for anyone seeking to earn a postgraduate degree at AE-FUNAI,” he stated.

Prof. Nwachukwu charged the students to see themselves as ambassadors of the university’s culture of excellence. He encouraged them to combine hard work with strong ethical values, maintain cordial and professional relationships with their supervisors, and promptly reach out to the School’s management whenever challenges arise.

He reassured them of the University’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for quality research, mentorship, and academic growth.

In his address, the Provost of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Nwabueze Elom, congratulated the students on gaining admission into AE-FUNAI. He provided a comprehensive overview of the structure and operations of the School, taking the students through the key stages of postgraduate study: coursework, seminars, proposal defense, research, and thesis submission.

He urged the students to familiarize themselves early with the School’s handbook, guidelines, and timelines. He stressed the importance of regular interaction with departments and course advisers, and warned that procrastination remains a leading cause of programme extension and attrition.

Prof. Elom urged the new entrants of the School’s readiness to support them through mentorship, workshops, and periodic training, and charged them to represent AE-FUNAI creditably in their various fields of study.

Delivering the lead paper on “Ethics in Postgraduate Research,” Prof. Chukwunonso E.C.C. Ejike, described the sole legitimate purpose of research as the pursuit of truth for the good of humanity, animals, and the planet.
He warned that research misconduct: fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism, not only stalls knowledge production but also destroys the reputation of the researcher and their institution. Citing pressure to publish, graduate, and secure grants as drivers of unethical practices, he outlined safeguards across the research lifecycle, from clear research questions to truthful reporting and proper authorship.

Prof. Ejike challenged the students with reflective questions on data integrity and reminded them that entire disciplines would not exist if earlier scholars had compromised on truth.

He concluded: “Earning a postgraduate degree is not just about acquiring a sheet of paper with nice words. It is about producing and depositing knowledge ethically for the benefit of society.”

Speaking on “Supervisor-Student Relationship: Building a Research Relationship that Produces Results,” Prof. Amobi Ekwe, the Director of Academic Planning, framed supervision as a two-way contract anchored on communication, trust, and responsibility.

He identified “seven relationship killers” including silence, missed deadlines without explanation, ghosting supervisors, and expecting the supervisor to do the work.
“A supervisor can point to the mountain; it is your duty to climb it,” he admonished.

He urged students to attend meetings prepared, communicate early, and receive feedback as an invitation to strengthen their arguments. His “ten golden rules” included owning one’s research, meeting deadlines, and protecting research integrity.

Prof. Rita Alo, the Director of ICT in her presentation noted that Artificial Intelligence and ICT have moved from support tools to strategic drivers of knowledge creation. She urged students to develop disciplinary depth alongside digital competence, describing modern research as interdisciplinary, data-driven, and innovation-oriented.

She introduced practical AI tools for literature review, data analysis, and citation management such as Consensus, Elicit, Research Rabbit, and NotebookLM. However, she cautioned that AI must remain an assistant, not a substitute for scholarly thinking. She called for responsible use: verifying AI outputs, protecting confidential data, and maintaining originality.

“The graduate of the future must be deep in knowledge, strong in character, fluent in technology, and prepared to create opportunities. Use AI wisely, because if you refuse to think, you will stink,” she concluded.

The orientation ended with a renewed commitment by the University Management to support postgraduate students through structured mentorship, digital infrastructure, and a culture of integrity, while also reiterating its vision of producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also ethically grounded and technologically competent to solve societal problems and contribute to national development.

AE-FUNAI HOST COMMUNITIES REAFFIRM SUPPORT FOR PROF. NWACHUKWU, PLEDGE PARTNERSHIP FOR PEACE AND SUSTAINED DEVELOPMENT

The host communities of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, have pledged their unalloyed support to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, citing the need for a peaceful and collaborative environment to drive the university’s growth and development.

The commitment was made on Monday during separate courtesy visits by the leadership of Ndufu-Alike and Ndufu-Echara Autonomous Communities to the University. The delegations were led by Dr. Chibuike Collins, Acting President-General of Ndufu-Alike, and Elder Hon. James Igwe, President-General of Ndufu-Echara.

The Vice-Chancellor also conveyed the University’s condolences to the Ndufu-Alike community over the passing of its traditional ruler. He assured the community of the University’s solidarity and support during the burial rites.

In his remarks, Dr. Chibuike Collins stated that the progress of AE-FUNAI is a shared responsibility. He noted that the University’s expansion would have a direct positive impact on the social and economic wellbeing of the Ndufu-Alike community and Ikwo Local Government Area at large.

He assured the University Management of the community’s readiness to provide necessary support and to maintain peace and security within the host environment, and called for early and continuous dialogue to prevent misunderstandings and to resolve issues before they escalate.

He further described Prof. Nwachukwu’s appointment as a historic opportunity to strengthen the ancestral ties between Ikwo and Okposi clans, and to deepen town-gown relations.

On his part, Elder Hon. James Igwe of Ndufu-Echara expressed optimism about deeper engagement with the University. He invited the Vice-Chancellor for a reciprocal visit to Ndufu-Echara to enable more robust discussions with the community’s traditional leadership.

Elder Igwe emphasized that sustained dialogue would help both parties to clearly articulate expectations, address concerns arising from the University’s presence, and build greater trust and mutual understanding.

The convergence of the University Management and its host communities signals a renewed commitment to a partnership-driven model of development. Both parties agreed that peace, security, and shared prosperity remain central to the realization of AE-FUNAI’s mandate as a center of academic excellence.

This collaborative posture is expected to strengthen AE-FUNAI’s operating environment and accelerate its contribution to community development.
