EXTORTION: KWARTMA DISMISSES ONE, DEMOTES TWO PERSONNEL

The Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) has dismissed one personnel and demoted two others following an investigation into allegations of extortion involving motorists during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise at Geri Alimi Roundabout, Ilorin.

The disciplinary action followed a viral video showing the alleged unethical conduct of three KWARTMA personnel during the sanitation exercise on Saturday, June 27, 2026,where they were reported to have been extorting motorists.

Following the public concern generated by the video, the Chief Executive Officer of KWARTMA, Abdullahi Suleiman Oba, acknowledged the concerns raised by members of the public and stated that the conduct depicted in the video did not represent the values, operational standards, or official policy of the Authority.

The CEO reiterated KWARTMA’s zero-tolerance policy against extortion, bribery, corruption, and all forms of misconduct by its personnel.

In line with the Authority’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and due process, the three personnel allegedly involved were directed to report to the Provost Department for interrogation and investigation.They were subsequently invited before the Senior Staff Management Committee (SSMC) to respond to the allegations and undergo the appropriate disciplinary proceedings in accordance with public service rules.

Following the investigation and disciplinary proceedings, the three personnel were found culpable and sanctioned accordingly. The sanctions take effect from July 9, 2026.

Commenting on the disciplinary action, the KWARTMA Chief Executive Officer described the dismissal as a landmark disciplinary action in the history of the Authority, demonstrating the seriousness with which the management regards corruption, extortion, and other forms of misconduct.

Oba stressed that the action would serve as a strong deterrent to other personnel, noting that KWARTMA would not tolerate any conduct capable of undermining public confidence in the Authority.

He cautioned all officers and men to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, discipline, and accountability in the discharge of their duties, warning that any personnel found culpable of extortion, bribery, corruption, or other unethical practices would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with public service rules.

“There will be no sacred cows in our determination to maintain discipline, integrity and professionalism within KWARTMA. Any personnel found culpable of misconduct will face the appropriate disciplinary measures,” Oba stated.

KWARTMA further reassured members of the public of its commitment to ensuring that all its personnel discharge their duties professionally, courteously, responsibly, and in strict compliance with the law and approved operational procedures.

The Authority remains steadfast in its mandate of promoting road safety, protecting lives and property, ensuring orderly traffic management, and delivering quality service to the people of Kwara State.

ILORIN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KWARTMA STRENGTHEN COLLABORATION FOR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND ROAD SAFETY

The management of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Ilorin West Local Government to seek strategic collaboration aimed at improving traffic management and enhancing the safety of road users within the Local Government Area.

The visit focused on addressing traffic challenges along the Ita-Nmon axis, Mandate Market and other critical roads within Ilorin West, with a view to ensuring safer and more orderly road use for motorists, pedestrians and residents.

Speaking during the meeting, the Chief Executive Officer of KWARTMA, Abdullahi Suleiman Oba, appreciated the Chairman for receiving the management team and emphasized that inter-agency collaboration remains vital to safeguarding lives and property on the roads.

He noted that a strengthened partnership between KWARTMA and the Local Government would facilitate improved traffic management, reduce road obstructions, enhance public safety, and promote prompt emergency response and effective traffic enforcement activities across the council area.

The CEO further explained that the enforcement of approved road setbacks, protection of pedestrian walkways, and the removal of illegal motor parks, particularly those operated by tricycle riders around the Ita-Nmon area, would significantly improve vehicular and pedestrian movement while fostering a more orderly traffic environment.

He appealed for the support of the Local Government in providing office accommodation within the Local Government coverage, to enhance the Authority's operational efficiency and ensure a more effective response to traffic-related issues within the area.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Ilorin West Local Government, Hon. Shehu Babatunde Abdulrahman (Ladan), commended KWARTMA for its commitment to traffic management and road safety across the state. He identified strategic locations requiring the Authority's presence, including Egbejila/Airport Junction, Egbejila/Asa Dam Junction, Mandate Market and Mandate Estate Junction, where traffic congestion is frequently experienced.

The Chairman pledged the Local Government's readiness to collaborate with KWARTMA and assured the Authority of the council's support, including the provision of office accommodation to strengthen its operations within the Local Government Area.

He finally commended the Governor of Kwara State, His Excellency Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for his inclusive style of governance and unwavering commitment to the development of the state.

PODO DONATES OFFICES TO KWARTMA, FRSC; PLEDGES MORE SUPPORT FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY

The Executive Chairman of Ilorin South Local Government Area, Hon. Nuhu Majeed Podo, on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, donated operational outpost offices to the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the newly completed Ilorin South Shopping Complex, Oko-Olowo, Ilorin.

The gesture is aimed at enhancing efficient traffic management, road safety, security, and public order within the local government area and Kwara State at large.

While presenting the offices, Hon. Podo commended KWARTMA for its outstanding performance in Ilorin South Local Government, particularly along the Oko-Olowo Expressway, a corridor that has witnessed repeated road traffic crashes over the years. He noted that the Authority's intervention has significantly contributed to improving traffic control and safety within the area.

The Chairman pledged additional logistical support to both agencies and appreciated their management and personnel for their dedication and commitment to duty. He urged them to sustain and improve upon their efforts in safeguarding lives and property on the roads.

Hon. Podo also commended the Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for his visionary leadership and commitment to infrastructural development across the state. He explained that the donation of the offices forms part of the council's contribution towards strengthening road traffic and security agencies in their collective responsibility of making the roads safer and society more secure.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, KWARTMA, the Director of Zonal Operations, Mr. Nureni Olanipekun, expressed profound appreciation to the Chairman and his team for the generous gesture. He assured the council that the facilities would be judiciously utilized for the benefit of the people of Ilorin South and Kwara State in general.

Mr. Olanipekun further appealed to the Chairman to consider extending similar support to other strategic locations within the local government area, including Tanke and Gaa-Akanbi, where operational facilities are also needed. He equally called on other Local Government Chairmen across the state to emulate Hon. Podo's exemplary support for KWARTMA's operations and traffic safety initiatives.

KWARTMA RESPONDS TO FATAL OKO-OLOWO TRAILER CRASH: 15 CONFIRMED DEAD, 17 INJURED

The Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) responded to a fatal road traffic crash that occurred at about 9:00 a.m. on Monday ay, 6th July, 2026, along the Oko-Olowo Expressway, Ilorin.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a trailer suffered a mechanical failure due to a damaged chassis and broke down on the highway. As other articulated vehicles approached the scene, one of the trailers swerved in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming trailer. In the course of the evasive manoeuvre, the overloaded trailer lost control and overturned, resulting in the tragic crash.

A total of 15 persons were confirmed dead, while 17 others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately evacuated to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.

KWARTMA rescue and recovery operations commenced at about 11:00 a.m., with officers of the Authority promptly securing the accident scene, managing traffic to minimise congestion, and coordinating recovery efforts.

The Authority also supervised the transloading of the overturned trailer, which was conveying spaghetti and other consumable goods, into another truck to facilitate recovery and prevent further obstruction of the highway.

The recovery operation was successfully concluded at about 7:30 p.m., when the overturned trailer was removed from the roadway, restoring normal vehicular movement along the corridor.

Reacting to the incident, the Chief Executive Officer of KWARTMA, Mallam Abdullahi Suleiman Oba, expressed profound sadness over the unfortunate loss of lives and extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The CEO urged motorists, particularly operators of articulated vehicles, to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey, avoid excessive loading, and always display appropriate warning signs whenever a vehicle breaks down on the highway.

He stressed that strict adherence to road safety regulations remains essential in preventing avoidable tragedies.

Mallam Suleiman also appreciated the various security and emergency response agencies that collaborated with KWARTMA throughout the rescue, traffic management and recovery operations, noting that their collective efforts ensured the prompt restoration of safety and the free flow of traffic along the expressway.

RE -ALLEGATIONS OF EXTORTION AND PUBLIC NOTICE

The attention of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) has been drawn to a viral video circulating on social media alleging that officers of the Authority received gratification from motorists during the Environmental Sanitation Exercise conducted on Saturday, 30th June, 2026.

While the Authority acknowledges the concerns raised by members of the public, it is important to state that the video does not represent the values, operational standards or official policy of the Authority.

The Authority maintains zero-tolerance against extortion, bribery, corruption and all forms of misconduct by its personnel.

In line with its commitment to transparency and accountability, the officers allegedly involved have been directed to report to the Provost Department for interrogation and investigation. The outcome of the investigation will determine the appropriate administrative and disciplinary actions to be taken in accordance with established regulations and due process.

The Authority wishes to reassure the public that it remains steadfast in enforcing discipline among its personnel and ensuring that all officers discharge their duties professionally, courteously, and in strict compliance with the law.

KWARA STATE GOVERNMENT COMMENCES 2026 PROMOTION RATIFICATION FOR KWARTMA PERSONNEL

The Kwara State Government has commenced the ratification of the 2026 promotion exercise for eligible officers and men of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA), in a move aimed at boosting staff morale and enhancing service delivery across the state.

The exercise, which was conducted at the Authority's Headquarters in Ilorin, commenced on Thursday 11th June 2026, involving representatives of the Office of the Head of Service and the Ministry of Transportation, who meticulously examined personnel records to ensure that all qualified officers due for promotion were duly considered.

No fewer than 87 personnel are expected to benefit from the promotion exercise, which forms part of the administration's commitment to rewarding diligence, dedication, and outstanding service in the public sector.

Eid-el-Fitr 2026: KWARTMA Deploys Personnel for Hitch-Free Traffic Flow

The Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) has deployed over 450 officers and men and operational logistics, across the state to ensure the free flow of traffic before, during, and after the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Head of Media and Public Relations of the Authority, PRTO Olawuyi Gani Olalekan. According to the statement, the Chief Executive Officer of KWARTMA, Abdullahi Suleiman Oba, disclosed that the deployment, which will run from 17th to 22nd March, is strategically targeted at traffic-prone areas and key locations within the metropolis.

The deployment comprises 350 personnel assigned to traffic management and control, 30 officers for surveillance duties, and 50 personnel for highway patrol and monitoring along major corridors such as Offa, Ajase, Okoolowo, and Bode Saadu.
In addition, 10 members have been designated as a rescue team to promptly evacuate broken-down vehicles, while another 10 personnel will handle feedback and traffic reporting at various locations. which will be supported by 6 patrol vehicles, 10 motorbikes and heavy duty tow trucks.

The Chief Executive Officer urged all motorists and road users to cooperate with KWARTMA and other relevant agencies to ensure seamless traffic movement during the festive period. He further advised road users to strictly adhere to traffic regulations to guarantee their safety.

The KWARTMA Boss extends his warm felicitations to the Governor of Kwara State, His Excellency Mallam Abdurahman Abdulrasaq, CON; the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR; and the entire Muslim community on the successful completion of the 2026 Ramadan and Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
