GLOBAL RECOGNITION: How NPA's Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho Steered Apapa and Tin Can Ports Into the World's Top 20 Most Improved
For years, mention the words "Apapa" or "Tin Can Island" to any Nigerian businessman, and you would likely get a heavy sigh. The ports were infamous for soul-crushing gridlock, bureaucratic red tape, and endless delays.
Today, that narrative has completely changed. Right at the center of this maritime renaissance is a son of Taraba State, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, the Managing Director and CEO of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
According to the 2025 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, Tin Can Island Port and Apapa Port now rank **10th and 12th globally** among the world's most improved container ports.
A Historic Leap in Global Rankings
When Dr. Dantsoho took the helm at the NPA, he inherited a deeply entrenched culture of delays. Instead of relying on old, heavy-handed tactics, he introduced a modern leadership style centered on data, practical problem-solving, and empathy for everyday port users.
The World Bank data reveals a staggering operational leap. Over a five-year analytical window, Tin Can Island Port improved its CPPI score by 42 points, while Apapa Port leaped by 35 points.
With this feat, Nigeria has outpaced major international maritime hubs like France’s Port of Marseille. This rapid rise reflects drastically reduced vessel turnaround times and the elimination of traffic congestion. Under his stewardship, the NPA has achieved nearly
90% automation, deploying electronic call-up systems and digital cargo processing to reduce transaction times from days to minutes.
Financial Engineering: ROA, ROI, and Net Interest Margin
Dr. Dantsoho approached the NPA not just as a government agency, but as a high-performing commercial asset. His financial engineering has fundamentally reshaped the authority's balance sheet:
Return on Assets (ROA) & Return on Investment (ROI): By modernizing infrastructure and plugging leakages, the NPA is extracting maximum value from its assets. Private investors are seeing unprecedented returns, making Nigerian ports a prime destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
Net Interest Margin & Revenue Surge: Under his leadership, the NPA’s revenue surged from ₦424.2 billion in 2023 to an astounding ₦893.6 billion in 2024, a 111% leap, with projections for 2025 reliably set to breach the ₦1.28 trillion mark.
> "We are positioning Nigeria as a formidable maritime hub," Dr. Dantsoho recently noted, crediting the investor-friendliness of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the support of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.
> The Taraba Icon Redefining African Maritime
Born in Jalingo, Taraba State, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho is a homegrown technocrat who rose through the ranks. Holding a PhD in Maritime Technology from Liverpool John Moores University, he brings pure, unadulterated expertise to the NPA.
His achievements have reverberated far beyond Nigeria's borders. Recognizing his knack for turning troubled waters smooth, his peers recently elected him as the Chairman of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA), making him the first Nigerian to hold the prestigious regional seat.
Sculpting a Lasting Legacy
True leadership isn't about making noise; it’s about making systems work. As the NPA aggressively drives the development of the National Single Window to capture over 70% of West and Central Africa's cargo traffic, Dr. Dantsoho’s footprint is set in stone.
For the people of Taraba State and Nigeria as a whole, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho represents the very best of public service, proving that with the right leadership, Nigeria's institutions can lead the world.
