Honoured to share insights on leadership, Humbled by the recognition: Reflections from the University of Jos students leadership summit

Yesterday, I had the distinct honour of presenting the lead paper at a summit organized by the Senate of the students union government University of Jos.
My presentation, titled from advocacy to action: Building responsible students leadership through integrity, service and unity explored the critical role of leadership in shaping development and social transformation. In my remarks I challenged participants to rise above the pursuit of titles and position and embrace leadership as a call to service, inspire and create positive changes . I emphasized that effective leadership is anchored on purpose, vision, character, competence, accountability and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people they represent.

I further stressed that advocacy must translate to action, and that today's leaders must cultivate the skills, values and character required to become the architects of a better society.

The summit was chaired by Hon. Yarry Kumchi, a respected statesman and distinguished public servant, who was ably represented by Dr. Clement Chirman, Rector of Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi. The event was further enriched by the presence of several eminent personalities, including the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Philemon Daffi, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Local Government Chairmen, senior government officials, academics, and other distinguished guests whose participation underscored the importance of leadership development among young people.

A particularly humbling moment of the summit was the presentation of an award by the Senate of the students union government of the University in recognition of my contributions to policy development and governance I received the award with profound gratitude and humility mindful that any impact I have made has been made possible through the support of my mentors, colleagues and friends. I'm profoundly grateful for the opportunity the governor, His Excellency, Barr Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has given to serve.
I sincerely commend the leadership of the students union government, the organizers of the summit for creating the platform that nurtures the next generation of leaders. The quality of engagement, the depth of inquiry, and the enthusiasm demonstrated by the students reaffirm my confidence in the future of our nation.

As I reminded the participants, leadership is one of the most powerful forces in human affairs, it shapes destinies, influences outcomes, determines the success or failure of institutions and ultimately defines the trajectory societies. The future we desire as a people will be built by leaders who choose service over self interest, principle over expediency, and unity over division.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts, learn from these remarkable leaders and contribute in my modest way to the ongoing conversation on leadership, good governance and national development.

The journey from advocacy to action begins with each of us.

Happy Birthday, My Beloved Son, Aweng.

There are few privileges greater than watching a child grow into a man of character, purpose, and promise. Today, my heart overflows with gratitude to God for the priceless gift of your life.

Aweng, you are not only my son by birth—you have become my friend in laughter, my companion in life's journey, and a constant source of pride. Every year, you remind me that God's blessings are not merely counted in possessions but in the lives He entrusts to us.

As you celebrate another year today, I pray that Heaven will write beautiful chapters into your story. May your path shine ever brighter. May wisdom guide your decisions, grace distinguish your efforts, favour announce your name, and God's mighty hand preserve you from all harm. May doors no man can shut open before you, and may your dreams find expression in extraordinary accomplishments.

Never forget who you are. You were created for significance, not mediocrity; for impact, not applause; for purpose, not merely existence. May your life continue to reflect integrity, compassion, courage, and excellence.

Thank you for being a wonderful son, a dependable friend, and a cherished companion. My greatest joy is not simply that you are growing older, but that you are growing into the man God designed you to be.

Happy Birthday, my dear Aweng. May the years ahead be richer than those behind, and may your best days forever remain ahead of you.

With boundless love, enduring pride, and unceasing prayers,

May this birthday mark the beginning of a season of divine favour, uncommon opportunities, and lasting joy for Aweng. Happy birthday to him!

PRESS STATEMENT

DR. AKIM MAYAT CONDEMNS THE MURDER OF THE DISTRICT HEAD OF GWANDE, COMMISERATES WITH FAMILY, TRADITIONAL COUNCIL, AND THE PEOPLE OF BOKKOS

I received with profound shock and deep sadness the news of the brutal murder of the District Head of Gwande, His Royal Highness, Saf Samuel Alaket in the latest wave of violence that has continued to plague thecommunities in Bokkos Local Government Area.

This reprehensible act is not only an attack on an individual but a direct assault on our cherished traditional institution, community leadership, and the collective peace and stability of our people. It is particularly disturbing that this tragic killing represents the third in a coordinated series of attacks targeting traditional rulers in Bokkos, a development that raises serious concerns and demands urgent attention from security agencies.

On behalf of The Change We Can Truly Trust movement, I strongly condemn this cowardly and senseless act of violence. No society can thrive where those entrusted with preserving our customs, values, and communal harmony are deliberately targeted and murdered in cold blood.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late District Head, the good people of Gwande District, the Bokkos Traditional Council, and all citizens mourning this painful loss. We share in your grief and pray that Almighty God grants the deceased eternal rest and gives his family, subjects, and colleagues in the traditional institution the strength to bear this irreparable loss.

I also call on security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation, identify the perpetrators and sponsors of these heinous attacks, and bring them to justice. The continued targeting of traditional rulers must be not be allowed to persist unchecked.

At this difficult moment, I urge our people to remain united, vigilant, and law-abiding while supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace and security across our communities.

May the soul of the departed traditional ruler rest in perfect peace.

DR. AKIM MAYAT CONDEMNS THE KILLINGS IN KAWEL, MUSHERE, BOKKOS LOCAL GOVERNMENT

WHEN A COMMUNITY BLEEDS, OUR HUMANITY IS TESTED

There are tragedies that leave scars, and there are tragedies that challenge the very conscience of a people. The renewed attack on Kawel community in Mushere, Bokkos Local Government Area, belongs to the latter. The reported loss of innocent lives and the anguish inflicted upon families is not merely another unfortunate incident. It is a profound human tragedy that demands our deepest compassion and our strongest collective resolve.

Today, homes have been emptied of loved ones. Parents have been robbed of their children, children have been robbed of their parents, and families have been left to confront a grief that words can scarcely describe. No society should become accustomed to mourning its innocent citizens. Every life taken is a priceless gift lost, every tear shed is a reminder of our shared responsibility to preserve the sanctity of human life.
I condemn this horrific attack in the strongest possible terms and extend my sincere sympathy and deepest condolences to the bereaved families. Those who choose violence against innocent people have no place in a society founded on justice, peace, and respect for human dignity.

I commend the sacrifices of our security personnel who continue to confront enormous challenges in the discharge of their duty, while respectfully urging them to further intensify ongoing operations, strengthen intelligence, reinforce vulnerable communities, and ensure that every individual responsible for this cruel act is identified, apprehended, and made to face justice. Justice must not only be pursued, it must be seen to prevail.

To my brothers and sisters, the resilient people of Bokkos, I know that your pain runs deeper than headlines can capture. I know that fear lingers where laughter once echoed and uncertainty now shadows communities that deserve nothing but peace. Yet history reminds us that communities bound together by faith, courage, and unity are stronger than those who seek to break them through violence.
This is not the time for despair. It is the time for solidarity. It is the time to stand with every grieving family, support every survivor, strengthen our communities, and reaffirm our collective commitment to peace and lawful coexistence.

The blood of the innocent must never become an accepted chapter of our story. We owe the departed our prayers, we owe the bereaved our compassion, and we owe future generations an unwavering commitment to building a Plateau where every citizen can sleep without fear, farm without anxiety, worship without intimidation, and live with dignity.

May Almighty God grant eternal rest to the departed, healing to the injured, comfort to every grieving family, and the grace to restore enduring peace to Bokkos, Plateau State, and our beloved nation.

TRIBUTE TO PROF. SILAS DOGARA GYAR

It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of personal loss that I pay tribute to my friend and brother, Prof. Silas Dogara Gyar.

Prof. Gyar was a remarkable man whose life embodied scholarship, humility, faith, and service. He was not only an accomplished academic but also a mentor, a source of wise counsel, and a friend whose kindness and generosity touched countless lives. His commitment to excellence, his passion for knowledge, and his dedication to the growth and well-being of others earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.

Only a few days ago, I had the privilege of spending time with him. After a warm conversation on Saturday, I visited him at his Lafia residence on Sunday with my wife and two of my children. Though he was unwell, he received us with warmth and grace. We shared fellowship and prayed together, trusting God for His healing. Before departing Lafia on Monday morning, I visited him once again. Those moments, which seemed ordinary at the time, have now become treasured memories.

His passing has left a void that will be difficult to fill. For me, it is not merely the loss of a respected professor; it is the loss of a brother, a trusted friend, and a man whose presence enriched the lives of many. Yet, even in grief, we are comforted by the impact of his life and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.

Prof. Silas Dogara Gyar lived a life of purpose and significance. He inspired others through his intellect, strengthened many through his faith, and uplifted countless people through his kindness. His contributions will continue to speak long after his departure.

As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life well lived. May God comfort his family, colleagues, students, friends, and all who are grieving this painful loss. May the Lord grant him eternal rest and reward him abundantly for his faithful service on earth.

Farewell, Prof. Silas Dogara Gyar.
You ran your race with dignity and honour.
Your memory will remain a blessing to us all.

EASTER MESSAGE OF HOPE, RENEWAL, AND PURPOSE
From Dr. Akim Audu Mayat

As we celebrate this sacred season of Easter, I extend my warmest greetings to you and your loved ones. Easter reminds us of the triumph of the resurrection—the victory of life over death, light over darkness, and hope over despair through our Lord Jesus Christ. The resurrection of Jesus is the eternal message that no situation is beyond redemption and no night is too long for dawn to break.

In a time marked by uncertainty and challenge, this message speaks even more powerfully. It calls us to rise above fear, division, and doubt, and to embrace faith, unity, and a renewed sense of purpose. It reminds us that even in our most difficult moments, there is always the promise of a new beginning.

As a servant-leader, I draw strength from this profound truth. I remain committed to the values of sacrifice, service, and integrity—working tirelessly to stand with the people, to give voice to your aspirations, and to help build a society where justice prevails, opportunities abound, and every citizen can thrive.

Easter is not only a celebration; it is a call to action. It challenges us to rise—rise above limitations, rise above setbacks, and rise together to shape a future defined by hope, and shared progress. Let us renew our determination to build a better tomorrow where peace is sustained, leadership is responsible, and hope is alive in every home.

May the power of the resurrection bring healing to our land, restoration to our communities, and peace to every heart. May your homes be filled with joy, your spirits strengthened by faith, and your lives guided by purpose and endless possibilities.

Together, we build a secure and prosperous society

Happy Easter.

Tribute to Rev. Dr. Ukpai

Rev. Dr. Ukpai was, without doubt, a deeply consequential leader whose impact on evangelism remains both profound and enduring. His life was a testament to unwavering faith, selfless service, and an unrelenting commitment to the Great Commission.

Through decades of ministry, he touched countless lives, transformed communities, and strengthened the spiritual foundations of many. His voice carried hope, his teachings inspired purpose, and his leadership ignited a passion for Christ in generations of believers.

Rev. Dr. Ukpai did not merely preach the Gospel—he lived it. His humility, discipline, and devotion set a standard that will continue to guide and challenge all who had the privilege of knowing him or learning from his work.

His passing has indeed created a vacuum that will not be easily filled. Yet, even in death, his legacy speaks loudly—in the lives he shaped, the souls he won, and the enduring footprints he leaves behind.

As we mourn his departure, we also celebrate a life well spent in service to God and humanity. May his legacy continue to inspire us to live with purpose, serve with passion, and lead with integrity.

Rest well, faithful servant of God. Your labour was not in vain.
