FUTURE ELECTIONS IN JEOPARDY Nigeria's future elections are under threat due to the absence of punitive measures for electoral offenders. Parties with elected officials in government appear to be complacent about vote buying on election day.
The recent bye-elections saw women inquiring about which party offered higher vote-buying incentives, underscoring the severe level of impoverishment. I visited several election venues and was disheartened by the voters' lack of understanding regarding the importance of electing individuals with character, capacity, commitment, and compassion.
The 2027 elections will likely result in the election of unqualified candidates. The widespread hardship is perplexing, as citizens seem to prioritize financial gain over voting out poor governance.
This trend is a deplorable endorsement of poor governance in Nigeria. I fear that hardship will persist unless we adopt a more informed approach to voting. I pray that Allah will intervene to change the hearts of those in government and the Nigerian people, shifting our focus from money politics to compassionate leadership.
I write this piece with a deep sense of pain and concern for our future and that of our children.
