On Friday, 14 August 2026, the Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) team at PHC Mando, Igabi, led by the Officer in Charge, held a sensitisation meeting with community heads and religious leaders.

The engagement focused on creating awareness about the availability of mental health services at the PHC and encouraging community leaders to help connect individuals and families who may need support with available services.

Community and religious leaders play an important role in building trust, reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek help early.

Through engagements like this, we are strengthening the link between communities and primary healthcare, ensuring that mental health support is closer, more accessible and easier to reach.

Ahead of the official rollout of the Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) programme on Monday, August 17, leadership from KADSAMHSA, including the Director-General Joseph Ike and Head of Treatment Services, joined the NPF Director of Medical Services, Kaduna, and the ATI Focal Point for a readiness visit to Police Divisional Posts across the state.

The team engaged ATI-trained Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), distributed referral booklets, and completed key administrative processes to strengthen referral pathways ahead of the rollout.

ATI represents an important shift in how we respond to people whose substance-use challenges bring them into contact with the justice system connecting them to appropriate health and treatment services while supporting a more health-centred response.

As Kaduna State prepares for implementation, KADSAMHSA and the Nigeria Police Force remain committed to strengthening coordination between the health and justice systems, improving access to care, and ensuring that those who need support can be connected to the right services.

Together, we are building stronger referral pathways and a more responsive, health-centred approach to substance use.

There are many things we hear about mental health, substance use, recovery, family support, and seeking help.

Strengthening Mental Health Care Across Kaduna State

The ongoing mhGAP training, based on the WHO Mental Health Gap Action Programme framework, is taking place concurrently across Kaduna State, bringing mental health capacity closer to the communities we serve.

The training is being conducted across all 23 Primary Healthcare Centres of Excellence, with key frontline health personnel from each LGA participating, including Medical Officers, Nurses/Midwives, Community Health workers, and Local Government Health Secretaries.

This approach is intentional.

By strengthening the knowledge and skills of the teams already providing care within our communities, we are improving their ability to identify mental health concerns early, provide appropriate support, and make timely referrals when specialised care is needed.

For pregnant women and new mothers, this also creates an opportunity to make mental health part of routine antenatal and postnatal care—so concerns can be recognised earlier and support provided closer to home.

This training is an important part of Kaduna State’s ongoing effort to integrate mental health into Primary Healthcare and build a health system where people can access appropriate care closer to where they live.

Mental health care should not begin only when there is a crisis. Early identification and timely support can change lives.

Mental Health Care Should Start Where People Are.

Many mental health conditions emerge during childhood and adolescence. When early signs are missed and support is delayed, they can become more difficult to manage and affect a person’s education, relationships, work and quality of life.

This is why integrating mental health into Primary Healthcare matters.

Kaduna State is taking important steps to make mental healthcare part of routine healthcare, bringing early identification, basic support and referral closer to communities across the State’s 23 LGAs.

Following the enactment of the Kaduna State Mental Health Law, the State has continued to strengthen the systems needed to make mental health care accessible, equitable and part of the wider health system.

Kaduna has also taken the important step of integrating mental health into its contributory health insurance system, creating a pathway for enrolled residents to access essential mental health services through the health system without the full burden of out-of-pocket payment.

We recognise the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Senator Senator Uba Sani ,CON. These are more than policy changes. They represent a shift from waiting for crisis to early identification, early support and care closer to home.
This is an important step forward for the people of Kaduna State.

In Kaduna State, inducing our youth with drugs for political exploitation is completely unnecessary for the Administration of His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, because his unimpeachable works across every corner of the state stand as a compelling enough reason for a second term!
​As we approach the 2027 election cycle, our message remains clear: The future of our youth is too precious to be destroyed by drug abuse or hijacked for political violence.
​Yesterday, KadSAMHSA proudly partnered with the Tinubu-Uba Sani Mobilization Network to flag off a vital sensitization program themed: “Break the Chain of Drug Abuse: Choose Hope, Choose Life.”
​Through the “Tinubu-Uba Cares” initiative, we are actively educating our youths on the severe health implications of substance abuse. It’s time to end the narrative of youths being mobilized under the influence of drugs to cause unrest.
