Kano Governor Commends Senator Kawu Sumaila As He Presents Three-Year Scorecard of Representation in Kano South

The Governor of Kano State, Alh. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commended and appreciated the Senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Senator Suleiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, OFR, PhD, for his remarkable contributions to the development of the district, particularly in education, healthcare, agriculture, irrigation, youth empowerment and infrastructure.

The Governor made the commendation during the “Zauren Kano Ta Kudu” programme organised by Muryar Kano Ta Kudu, held on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Coronation Hall, Kano State Government House, where Senator Kawu Sumaila was invited as the Guest Speaker to present his three-year record of representation.

The event brought together the Governor, political and community leaders, traditional and religious figures, academics, youths, professionals and other stakeholders from Kano South.

In his presentation, Senator Kawu Sumaila highlighted a number of interventions and achievements recorded during his three years in office, demonstrating a representation centred on human capital development, education, healthcare, economic empowerment, agriculture, irrigation and strategic infrastructure.

EDUCATION: INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF KANO SOUTH

Education remains one of the major priorities of Senator Kawu’s representation.

Under his scholarship and educational intervention programmes, 1,022 students and scholars have benefited from various forms of educational support.

The beneficiaries include 173 health-science and nursing students, while 50 beneficiaries have received support in Islamic and Legal Studies.

The Senator has also supported 25 Master’s beneficiaries at Al-Istiqama University, alongside more than 500 undergraduate students, as well as five postgraduate beneficiaries from Doguwa Local Government Area pursuing Master’s Degrees after graduating from Al-Istiqama University.

In addition, some scholars have benefited from a ₦10,000 monthly allowance to assist them with their educational needs.

These interventions reflect the Senator’s conviction that sustainable development begins with investing in people and expanding opportunities for young constituents to acquire quality education and professional skills.

HEALTHCARE: BUILDING AND EQUIPPING FACILITIES

In the health sector, Senator Kawu has also recorded significant interventions.

A total of ₦39.693 million was provided under a documented intervention to support 101 health-science students.

The Senator also facilitated the provision of 1,000 hospital beds and mattresses to support healthcare facilities across Kano South.

One of the most significant healthcare achievements is the 40-bed hospital in Zarewa, Rogo Local Government Area, which was constructed and fully equipped by Senator Kawu Sumaila.

The facility represents a direct investment in the health and wellbeing of constituents and is intended to improve access to healthcare services for residents of Zarewa and surrounding communities.

EMPOWERMENT: CREATING ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES

Economic empowerment constitutes another important pillar of Senator Kawu Sumaila’s representation.

Within the period under review, the Senator recorded nine major empowerment programmes across Kano South, implemented to provide constituents with practical means of improving their livelihoods, strengthening their economic activities and promoting self-reliance.

The nine empowerment programmes covered various categories of beneficiaries across the Senatorial District and included the distribution and provision of vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles, sewing machines and other livelihood-support items and equipment.

These interventions were designed to provide constituents with the tools and means required to establish, expand or sustain small-scale businesses and other income-generating activities.

The empowerment programmes targeted different groups, including youths, women and other constituents, with emphasis on creating opportunities for self-reliance, supporting small-scale economic activities and improving the capacity of beneficiaries to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Under one documented empowerment intervention, 16 beneficiaries received ₦500,000 each, providing them with financial support to establish or strengthen their economic activities.

The Senator believes that meaningful empowerment must go beyond financial assistance by providing practical assets, tools and opportunities that enable beneficiaries to become productive, self-reliant and contributors to the local economy.

EDUCATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Beyond scholarships, Senator Kawu’s interventions have also focused on improving the learning environment.

More than 3,000 school chairs and tables have been provided to schools across Kano South.

The provision is aimed at addressing basic infrastructure challenges in schools and creating a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.

AGRICULTURE AND IRRIGATION: INVESTING IN FOOD SECURITY

Agriculture and irrigation constitute another major area of Senator Kawu’s developmental agenda.

Among the major interventions highlighted is the commitment of ₦15 billion towards the rehabilitation of Kafin Chiri Dam and associated irrigation infrastructure, covering approximately 180 hectares of irrigation land.

The Senator also highlighted plans for the provision of 6,000 tube wells across the 16 Local Government Areas of Kano South, which will support access to water for agricultural production and strengthen dry-season farming.

Furthermore, the Kano State Government has approved approximately ₦2.5 billion for the Garko–Sumaila/Kafin Chiri irrigation intervention, further complementing efforts to expand irrigation and agricultural productivity in the area.

These interventions are particularly significant to Kano South, where agriculture remains a major source of livelihood for thousands of families.

₦95 BILLION FEDERAL PROJECTS ACROSS KANO SOUTH

Senator Kawu also highlighted approximately ₦95 billion worth of Federal Government projects approved across Kano South, covering major interventions in agriculture, irrigation, infrastructure and erosion control.

The Senator emphasised that effective representation involves not only direct constituency interventions but also persistent advocacy for major Federal Government projects capable of addressing the broader developmental needs of the people.

A SCORECARD OF PEOPLE-CENTRED REPRESENTATION

The three-year scorecard presented by Senator Kawu reflects a broad approach to representation that places people, education, healthcare, economic empowerment and sustainable development at the centre.

The interventions span all major areas of human development, from scholarships and educational infrastructure to healthcare facilities, nine empowerment programmes involving vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles, sewing machines and other livelihood-support items, agriculture and irrigation.

The commendation by the Kano State Governor at the event further reinforced the importance of these interventions and the need for continued collaboration among elected representatives, the state government and other stakeholders in advancing the development of Kano South.

Senator Kawu expressed appreciation to the people of Kano South for their continued support and confidence, while reaffirming his commitment to purposeful representation and to pursuing initiatives that will improve the quality of life and economic prospects of constituents.
