Kogi L-PRES Hands Over Sites for the Construction of Model Slaughter House and Wet Market to Contractors in Idah
IDAH – The Kogi State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project has officially handed over sites for the construction of a Model Slaughter House and Wet Market project to the contractor in Idah Local Government Area, with stakeholders emphasizing the need for quality ex*****on, optimum use and sustainability.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the State Project Coordinator, Mr. Otaru Abdulkabir Onoruoyiza, said the project is being funded through the World Bank Assisted Kogi L-PRES Project and urged beneficiaries to ensure the facilities are properly used, maintained and sustained upon completion.
He noted that the project is aimed at improving livestock productivity, safe slaughtering operations and marketing of meat products towards increasing livestock farmers income, economic growth, food safety and security in Idah Local Government Area and its environ.
The coordinator further explained that the project intervention is in line with the "One Health" approach being promoted by the L-PRES Project, which recognizes the interconnection between human health, animal health, and the environment in achieving sustainable development, food safety and security.
According to him, the projects will contribute to safer livestock production systems, improved public health, and increased economic opportunities for residents of the area.
The State Project Coordinator thanked and appreciated His Excellency, Alh Ahmed Usman Ododo, the Executive Governor of Kogi State for creating the enabling environment for the implementation of L-PRES Project in Kogi State through the payment of the State Counterpart fund.
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of Idah Local Government Area, Hon. Alhaji Halilu Alifa, commended the Kogi L-PRES Project for locating the projects in the council area, describing the intervention as timely and beneficial to the local economy.
He expressed appreciation to the Kogi State Government and the L-PRES Project Management Team for extending the developmental initiative to Idah and assured them of the council's commitment to ensuring the successful delivery of the projects.
"As a local government, we are committed to supporting the successful implementation of these projects. To complement the efforts of Kogi L-PRES, the council will inaugurate a monitoring committee that will oversee the progress of work and ensure that contractors deliver according to the approved design specifications and within the stipulated timeframe," the chairman stated.
He added that the committee would work closely with community leaders, stakeholders and project officials to ensure transparency, accountability, and quality delivery.
The Idah Butchers Association Chairman, Mr. Sani Momoh said that the construction of the Model Slaughter House and Wet market would provide a more conducive environment for livestock Agribusiness, meat processing, and marketing activities, while improving hygiene and safety standards within the livestock value chain.
Other projects being executed by the Kogi L-PRES Project in Idah LGA is the Livestock Improvement & Breeding Centre (LIBC)
