Nigerian Jubilee Fellows Receive Orientation on Digital Skills, Employment Opportunities

Participants of the Nigerian Jubilee Fellows Programme (NJFP) have been assured of training, mentorship, and access to employment opportunities as part of efforts to improve youth employability and digital capacity in the country.

Speaking during an orientation session for newly appointed fellows, the Director General of Nasarawa State Information Technology and Digital Economy Agency (NASITDEA), Haruna Sani Sani disclosed that the initiative is designed not only to provide temporary employment opportunities but also to equip participants with lifelong skills that will remain valuable beyond the duration of the fellowship.

According to the DG, the programme has secured partnerships with private organizations, institutions, and international bodies willing to engage and support trained fellows in various capacities.

As part of the initiative, participants will undergo an intensive one-month training programme covering key areas such as documentation and record management, spreadsheet applications, virtual assistance, project management, digital literacy, business communication, and freelancing opportunities.

The DG noted that the training would prepare participants for emerging opportunities in the global digital economy, particularly in areas such as data management, remote support services, and administrative assistance.

He further revealed that an initial pilot phase involving about 50 participants would be implemented, after which successful fellows would be recommended to partner organizations for placements and employment opportunities.

“Organizations are looking for individuals who possess not only technical skills but also professionalism, discipline, and effective time management,” the Director General stated, urging participants to demonstrate commitment and dedication throughout the programme.

To ensure wider participation, the training model will adopt a blended approach comprising virtual and physical sessions, with approximately 60 per cent of activities conducted online and 40 per cent delivered through in-person engagements.

Participants will also be deployed to centres and partner organizations closest to their locations to reduce logistical challenges and improve accessibility.

Beyond employment, the fellows were encouraged to contribute to community development by promoting digital literacy, mentoring younger students, and participating in projects aimed at improving local communities.

The Director General expressed the hope that beneficiaries would become success stories capable of inspiring others and contributing meaningfully to national development.

He emphasised that the initiative seeks to create a network of empowered young Nigerians who can either secure meaningful employment, establish businesses, or engage in freelancing and remote work opportunities.

Participants were also assured of continuous mentorship and support from programme officials and partner organizations throughout the duration of the fellowship.

The orientation session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment during which participants raised concerns regarding deployment locations, training schedules, hybrid learning arrangements, and assignment to partner organizations.

Responding to the concerns, programme officials assured participants that placements would take into consideration proximity to their places of residence and that virtual participation options would be available for many activities.

The DG reiterated the agency’s commitment to ensuring that the programme delivers measurable impact not only to beneficiaries but also to communities across the country through youth empowerment and digital transformation initiatives.

The Nigerian Jubilee Fellows Programme continues to serve as one of Nigeria’s flagship youth employability initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between education and the labour market while preparing young graduates for opportunities in the modern economy.

NASITDEA DG at Nasarawa Youth Opportunity Summit 2026

The Director-General of the Nasarawa State Information Technology and Digital Economy Agency (NASITDEA), Haruna Sani Sani, has called on young people to take full advantage of emerging opportunities in the digital economy, noting that millions of online jobs remain underutilised due to gaps in skills, awareness, and mindset.

He made this known while speaking as a panelist at the Nasarawa Youth Opportunity Summit 2026, where he stressed that many youths are still not fully engaging with available opportunities, instead waiting for handouts or relying on unproductive activities. He urged them to be proactive, acquire relevant skills, and position themselves for opportunities in the growing digital space rather than depend solely on government employment.

Haruna Sani Sani highlighted an ongoing partnership between NASITDEA and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which provides a one-year program for qualified graduates under the age of 30. The initiative offers a monthly stipend of about ₦150,000, alongside structured training and work experience designed to prepare beneficiaries for the digital economy.

He also pointed to expanding opportunities in e-commerce and digital markets, where goods and services can be traded across borders, as well as in content creation and other technology-driven services. According to him, digital innovation continues to open new income streams, and he encouraged experienced professionals to mentor young people, especially in areas of technology and innovation.

Beyond the digital space, he noted that opportunities also exist in agriculture, natural resources, and mining, including emerging e-agriculture systems that rely on technology to improve productivity. He added that artificial intelligence is creating additional avenues where individuals can develop and monetize digital content, tools, and creative solutions.

According to him, these opportunities can only be fully realised when young people are willing to learn, adapt, and take action. He emphasized that NASITDEA remains committed to providing tools, training, and access to platforms that can help youths build sustainable livelihoods, and encouraged them to actively register and participate in available programs.

In a separate panel contribution, another speaker at the summit also highlighted broader concerns around youth engagement in development programmes. The panelist observed that while thousands of young people apply for opportunities, only a small percentage actively follow through, often due to unrealistic expectations around financial gain or lack of commitment to training processes.

He noted that in several interventions, including large-scale training and internship programmes, participation has not always reflected the level of demand, with many applicants failing to complete programs or fully apply acquired skills. He also raised concerns about awareness gaps and the need for better communication of available opportunities across different platforms.

The panelist further emphasized the importance of discipline and proper utilization of support systems, noting that mismanagement of grants and resources has in some cases discouraged continued investment in youth-focused initiatives. He stressed that funding and training programmes are most effective when participants understand responsibility and purpose.

He concluded by urging young people to shift focus from immediate financial expectations to long-term skill acquisition and productivity, stating that sustainable success in today’s economy depends on knowledge, consistency, and a willingness to learn and apply skills effectively.

Dedicated Civil Servant Mallam AKWE UMAR MUSA Retires After 35 Years

After 35 years of service, Mallam AKWE UMAR MUSA has retired from the civil service, bringing an end to a career that began in April 1991.

The event commenced with an opening remark by the Director of Finance and Administration (DFA), Mr. Ozanawa Danjuma Musa who welcomed staff and described the gathering as both a moment of reflection and appreciation. He noted that while retirement marks the end of active service, it also highlights the impact and legacy of the outgoing officer, encouraging staff to learn from his years of dedication.

Mallam Umar, who served as Director of Human Resource and Administration (DHRA) at the Nasarawa State Information Technology and Digital Economy Agency (NASITDEA), officially stepped down on Thursday after 35 years of service. His retirement was approved by the Civil Service Commission, with effect from April 23, 2026.

In his remarks, Mallam Umar expressed gratitude to God for the gift of life and the opportunity to serve through to retirement. He reflected on his early days in service, noting that he started as a junior clerical officer and rose through dedication and perseverance to become a director.

“It is a privilege to see both the day you start work and the day you retire,” he said, recalling that only a few of his colleagues who started with him are still alive or in service today.

He described the civil service as a system that demands patience, hard work, and commitment, urging younger officers to stay focused and build their careers with integrity. He added that retirement is inevitable for everyone and encouraged staff to prepare for it while in service.

“I am happy to be exiting as a director. I started small, but today I leave fulfilled,” he said.

As part of the ceremony, Mallam Umar formally handed over the affairs of the Department of Human Resource and Administration to his successor, Ms. AISHA IBRAHIM. He also presented a brief overview of the department’s responsibilities, which include staff recruitment, promotions, training, records management, and processing of retirements and other personnel matters.

He noted that the agency currently has dozens of staff across multiple departments and area offices, emphasizing the importance of proper administration and continuity in service delivery.

In his address, the Director-General of NASITDEA, Haruna Sani Sani, praised Mallam Umar as a dedicated and disciplined officer whose contributions have helped shape the agency. He urged him not to withdraw completely from public life but to remain available to guide and mentor younger staff.

“Retirement is not the end; it is the beginning of another phase,” the Director-General said. “Your experience is valuable, and we will continue to rely on your advice.”

He also stressed the need to preserve institutional knowledge, noting that experienced officers like Mallam Umar play a key role in training and guiding the next generation of civil servants.

Colleagues described Mallam Umar as a calm, supportive, and committed leader, thanking him for his years of service and mentorship. They offered prayers for good health and a fulfilling life after retirement.

The ceremony featured goodwill messages, presentations, and formal acknowledgments, marking the end of Mallam Umar’s distinguished career and the beginning of a new chapter for both him and his successor.

Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation paid a courtesy visit to NASITDEA.

The visit of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to Nasarawa State Information Technology and Digital Economy Agency (NASITDEA) was more than a routine meeting, as it signaled a growing push toward digital transformation in Nasarawa State.

Officials from both sides gathered to discuss how technology can improve governance, record-keeping, and communication across ministries. One key issue raised was the need for accurate data. For proper record purposes, the Director General of NASITDEA, Haruna Sani Sani, noted the importance of visiting JAMB to understand the number of people registering each year, highlighting the role of reliable data in planning.

He used the opportunity to highlight the agency’s focus on digital literacy. According to him, “the agency is working on projects that will help individuals and institutions build the skills needed in a digital world.”

Another major area of discussion was the digitization of files and documents. Both the ministry and NASITDEA agreed on the need to move away from manual systems and adopt digital processes that are faster and more efficient. The ministry also expressed interest in achieving similar systems within its operations.

Despite some progress, challenges remain. The DG revealed that email contacts for about 25 to 26 ministries have already been captured by the agency. However, communication between these organizations is still a major issue. He added that the visit provides an opportunity for both parties to work together and improve coordination.

The Commissioner of the ministry, Comrade Gabriel Agbashi, emphasized the need for strong collaboration. He noted that the ministry will depend on NASITDEA’s support and expertise to achieve its goals.

Dr. John Ali Damina also spoke during the meeting, pointing out that poor performance in some areas is due to existing gaps and deficiencies. However, he expressed confidence in NASITDEA, describing it as an agency with the right intelligence, connectivity, and infrastructure to drive change.

As part of the visit, the Director General also took the visiting team on a tour of the facility, giving them a closer look at the agency’s operations and ongoing projects.

Overall, the meeting ended on a positive note, with both sides agreeing that closer collaboration will play a key role in achieving digital growth and development in the state.
