Jakande Meets Iyalojas, Babalojas of Eight Markets Over Sanitation, Modernisation Plans
The Executive Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, Dr. Seyi Jakande, on Wednesday hosted the Iyaloja and Babaloja of the eight divisional markets in the council area over environmental standards and the proposed modernisation of markets.
The meeting, held at the council secretariat and led by Alhaja Mufliat Adebunmi, focused on market management, traders’ welfare and the recent evaluation conducted by the Lagos State Government Environmental Market Monitoring Team, which had inspected markets in the LCDA and submitted its findings on areas requiring improvement.
Addressing the market leaders, Jakande stressed the need for clean, orderly and environmentally friendly markets, noting that proper sanitation, effective waste management and responsible use of market spaces were critical to creating safe and conducive trading environments.
He said the report of the monitoring team would guide further engagements and interventions, adding that his administration was committed to working collaboratively with market leadership to address identified gaps.
The council boss also unveiled plans to modernise markets across the LCDA, covering infrastructure, environmental sanitation and general organisation, but assured traders that the exercise would not lead to displacement. According to him, no trader would be chased or arbitrarily removed from their stalls, as the interest of traders would remain central to the reforms.
He urged the Iyalojas and Babalojas to take ownership of the sanitation drive by sensitising members on cleanliness and compliance with environmental regulations, while market leaders also shared their concerns and expectations and called for sustained dialogue.
Markets represented at the meeting were *Ojuwoye, Awolowo, Kajola, Ilupeju Model, Ikawolaso, Irepodun, Fagbile and Jinadu/Coker markets*.
Jakande reiterated that his administration would continue direct stakeholder engagement in its push for cleaner, more organised and modern markets across Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye.
