Breastfeeding Week 2026 – General Hospital Gbagada

Gbagada General Hospital joins the global community today, 4th August 2026, in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week, a vital annual campaign observed from 1st - 7th August to promote the health and well-being of mothers and children.

This year’s theme, ā€œBreastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,ā€ emphasizes the importance of reinforcing proven strategies that support breastfeeding across families, healthcare systems, and communities.

Breastfeeding remains one of the most effective ways to ensure a healthy start in life. It provides complete nutrition for infants, strengthens their immune system, enhances brain development, and fosters a strong bond between mother and child.

At General Hospital Gbagada, this celebration highlights:

• The need for continuous education and support for mothers.

• The role of healthcare professionals in promoting exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months

• The importance of creating a supportive environment at home, in workplaces, and in the community.

Globally, World Breastfeeding Week serves as a reminder that while the benefits of breastfeeding are well established, more effort is needed to ensure that every mother receives the encouragement and support she needs.

As we commemorate this special day, Gbagada General Hospital reaffirms its commitment to improving maternal and child health by promoting breastfeeding as a foundation for a healthier future.

GENERAL HOSPITAL GBAGADA COMMEMORATES WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY WITH PATIENT SENSITISATION

GHGBAGADA joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Blood Donor Day with a sensitisation programme aimed at educating patients and members of the public on the importance of voluntary blood donation.

The awareness session, which took place at the Medical Laboratory Department, focused on this year's theme, "One Drop of Humanity: Give Blood, Save Life." The programme was designed to encourage voluntary blood donation and highlight its crucial role in saving lives.

Speaking during the sensitisation exercise Deputy Director: Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) & Head of Department, Mrs. Omolara Eniayewun emphasized the importance of regular voluntary blood donation, noting that donated blood remains an essential resource for emergency care, surgical procedures, maternal healthcare and the treatment of patients with various medical conditions.

According to her, voluntary blood donation not only helps save the lives of recipients but also offers health benefits to donors. She explained that prospective blood donors undergo comprehensive medical screening before donation, which can help detect underlying health conditions at an early stage.

"Voluntary blood donation provides an opportunity to identify certain health challenges that may otherwise go unnoticed. Through the screening process, underlying diseases can be detected early, and appropriate treatment commenced promptly," he stated. She further urged members of the public to cultivate the habit of donating blood voluntarily at least once a year, stressing the need for a steady and safe blood supply in healthcare facilities.

The sensitisation programme formed part of the hospital's commitment to promoting public health awareness and encouraging community participation in life-saving healthcare initiatives. Patients and visitors present were educated on the eligibility criteria for blood donation and encouraged to become regular voluntary blood donors.

The event concluded with a call on members of the public to embrace the spirit of humanity by donating blood regularly, thereby contributing to a safer and more reliable blood supply for patients in need.
