NOA LAGOS STATE DIRECTOR ADVOCATES RESPONSIBLE INFORMATION SHARING DURING LTV'S KAARO OJIIRẸ PROGRAMME

The Lagos State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Mustafa Adedeji Tukur, has called on Nigerians to exercise caution in the dissemination and consumption of information, particularly on social media, in order to curb the spread of fake news, misinformation, disinformation, and false alarms capable of causing panic and social unrest.

Dr. Tukur made the call while featuring on Kaaro Ojiirẹ, a live television programme on Lagos Television (LTV) on Thursday, 4th June, 2026.

Speaking on the increasing menace of fake news in society, the State Director described fake news as misinformation, disinformation, or deliberately fabricated information circulated to deceive the public, create panic, damage reputations, or advance political, religious, or personal interests. He noted that while false information existed before the advent of social media, digital platforms have significantly amplified its reach and impact.

Using the recent incident involving the alleged kidnapping of school children in Oyo State as an example, Dr. Tukur explained that several false reports circulated on social media created unnecessary fear among residents in different communities. According to him, reports of similar incidents were falsely circulated in areas such as Sango, Epe, Imota, and Ibeju-Lekki, leading to panic among parents, some of whom rushed to schools to withdraw their children despite the information being unverified.

The State Director observed that many social media users often share information without proper verification, thereby contributing to the rapid spread of falsehood. He lamented that there are currently limited regulatory mechanisms governing the activities of social media users and influencers, making the spread of fake news more prevalent.

Dr. Tukur disclosed that whenever fake news, misinformation, or disinformation emerges, the National Orientation Agency promptly releases counter-information containing verified facts to correct false narratives and prevent unnecessary panic among citizens. He explained that while the Agency utilizes traditional media platforms such as radio, television, newspapers, community engagements, and interpersonal communication channels, it also leverages social media platforms to ensure that accurate information reaches a wider audience quickly and gains the same level of visibility as the false information being circulated. According to him, this approach enables the Agency to effectively counter fake news, discourage false alarms, and promote credible information in real time.

He further noted that many people no longer rely primarily on conventional media for information but spend considerable time on social media platforms, making it necessary for NOA to deploy the same platforms to disseminate verified information rapidly. He stressed that the Agency remains committed to ensuring that factual information goes viral before falsehoods can gain further traction in society.

He further warned against raising false alarms, noting that such actions could lead to the unnecessary deployment of emergency and security resources. He cited instances where emergency responders were mobilized based on exaggerated or inaccurate reports, only to discover that the situations were either less severe than portrayed or had already been resolved. According to him, persistent false alarms could undermine public confidence and discourage prompt responses during genuine emergencies.

The State Director emphasized that NOA continues to sensitize citizens against fake news and false alarms through community engagement platforms, including meetings of Community Development Associations (CDAs), Community Development Committees (CDCs), youth groups, artisans, market associations, and other stakeholders. He urged community leaders to educate residents on the dangers of spreading unverified information and to encourage the use of appropriate channels for reporting emergencies and security concerns.

Dr. Tukur expressed concern over the increasing influence of unregulated social media content on public perception, especially among young people. He called on relevant authorities and stakeholders to explore measures that would promote responsible use of social media while safeguarding freedom of expression.

Appealing to Nigerians regarding the Oyo State schoolchildren kidnapping incident, he urged citizens to remain calm and patient while security agencies and government authorities continue efforts to secure the safe release of the affected children. He cautioned against actions that could further complicate rescue operations, noting that sensitive security matters require wisdom, patience, and cooperation from the public.

The State Director also linked his message to the National Values Charter (NVC), particularly the values of Duty of Care and Tolerance under the 7 for 7 Citizens' Code. He stressed that citizens have a responsibility to verify information before sharing it, avoid actions capable of causing panic, and demonstrate tolerance and understanding in their interactions with others. According to him, promoting responsible communication and peaceful coexistence remains essential for national unity and sustainable development.

Dr. Tukur concluded by urging Nigerians to support government efforts in addressing security challenges and to remain committed to promoting peace, national unity, and responsible citizenship. He reaffirmed the commitment of the National Orientation Agency to continuous public enlightenment, civic engagement, and behavioural change communication aimed at fostering an informed, responsible, and peaceful society.

NOA LAGOS STATE DIRECTOR HIGHLIGHTS ACHIEVEMENTS OF PRESIDENT TINUBU'S ADMINISTRATION ON RADIO ONE'S MID-WEEK POLITICAL TONIC

The Lagos State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Mustafa Adedeji Tukur, has urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of government reforms, noting that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is laying a solid foundation for sustainable national development despite prevailing economic and social challenges.

Dr. Tukur made this known while featuring on Mid-Week Political Tonic, a current affairs programme on Radio One 103.5FM in Wednesday 3, June 2026, where he discussed the topic, "The First Three Years of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Office."

Responding to the question of whether Nigeria is better or worse off 1,100 days into the administration, the State Director stated that the government has implemented several bold and far-reaching reforms aimed at repositioning the nation for long-term growth. He acknowledged that while many Nigerians are still expecting greater improvements, the country is gradually moving in the right direction and citizens should exercise patience, noting that Nigeria's challenges did not develop overnight and cannot be completely resolved within a few years.

Speaking on the removal of fuel subsidy, Dr. Tukur noted that although the policy initially generated concerns among Nigerians, it has enabled the government to redirect resources to critical sectors of the economy. He explained that the subsidy regime had long been criticized as unsustainable and vulnerable to abuse. According to him, the impact of the policy can be seen in increased investments in infrastructure, support for local refineries, educational interventions such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), and other development initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.

On concerns regarding transparency in the management of funds saved from subsidy removal, the State Director stated that the visible investments in key sectors demonstrate government commitment to utilizing available resources for national development. He added that crude oil pricing remains largely influenced by global market forces and not solely by domestic policies.

Dr. Tukur highlighted several reforms undertaken by the administration, including tax reforms, local government autonomy, mining sector reforms, exchange rate stabilization measures, port rehabilitation initiatives, and efforts to improve the overall business environment. He described these initiatives as strategic interventions designed to stimulate economic growth, attract investments, and improve service delivery across the country.

Speaking on local government autonomy, he described it as a significant step towards deepening grassroots development. According to him, local governments remain the closest tier of government to the people and empowering them financially would enhance service delivery and ensure that development reaches communities more effectively. He also urged citizens to pay closer attention to local government elections and actively participate in choosing credible leaders at the grassroots level.

On the issue of tax reforms, Dr. Tukur explained that the objective is not to impose additional burdens on citizens but rather to simplify the tax system, reduce multiple taxation, provide relief for low-income earners and small businesses, and ensure that larger corporations contribute their fair share to national development.

Addressing developments in the maritime sector, the State Director noted that ongoing port reforms have improved operational efficiency and reduced congestion. He stated that while some reforms may take time before their full impact is felt, they are already contributing to the modernization of Nigeria's logistics and transportation systems.

On power supply, Dr. Tukur acknowledged that significant challenges remain within the sector. However, he emphasized that government is implementing reforms aimed at improving electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. He described the ongoing efforts as a work in progress that requires sustained investment and public support.

In the education sector, he commended the Federal Government for introducing student loan initiatives through NELFUND, which have provided opportunities for financially disadvantaged students to pursue higher education without interruption. He also noted improvements in industrial relations within tertiary institutions, resulting in reduced incidences of prolonged strikes, as well as the establishment and upgrading of educational institutions across the country.

Speaking on healthcare, the State Director highlighted government efforts to improve access to quality healthcare through the establishment and upgrading of health facilities, training of medical personnel, and investments aimed at strengthening the nation's healthcare system.

Dr. Tukur also pointed to major infrastructure projects being executed by the administration, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Badagry-Sokoto Highway and other strategic road networks designed to improve connectivity and reduce pressure on existing transportation corridors. According to him, these projects will significantly enhance economic activities and national integration in the years ahead.

On social welfare, he noted that government has introduced several intervention programmes targeting youths, the elderly, unemployed persons, and low-income households. He explained that various empowerment initiatives and humanitarian programmes are being implemented to cushion economic hardships and improve livelihoods.

Speaking on agriculture and food security, Dr. Tukur stressed that the Federal Government is providing loans, grants, and other forms of support to farmers to boost food production. He noted that agricultural interventions, coupled with active participation by state and local governments, would contribute significantly to achieving food security and reducing dependence on food imports.

On national security, the State Director acknowledged the complexities associated with securing a country as vast and diverse as Nigeria. He stated that government continues to invest in security infrastructure, equipment, and personnel while also adopting non-kinetic approaches to address underlying causes of insecurity. He noted that NOA contributes to these efforts through sustained public enlightenment, community engagement, and behavioural change communication.

Referring to the recent kidnapping of school children in Oyo State, Dr. Tukur appealed to citizens to remain calm and support ongoing rescue efforts by security agencies. He urged members of the public to avoid actions that could jeopardize operations aimed at securing the safe release of the children.

Looking ahead to the 2027 General Elections, the State Director emphasized the need for peaceful political participation. He disclosed that NOA has continued to engage stakeholders alongside the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promote issue-based politics and discourage electoral violence. According to him, elections should never be approached as a do-or-die affair, as peaceful democratic participation remains essential to national development.

On sports development, Dr. Tukur described sports as one of the strongest instruments for national unity and social cohesion. He called for increased investment in sporting facilities, talent development programmes, and grassroots sports initiatives to enable Nigeria maximize its immense sporting potential.

As Nigeria prepares to commemorate Democracy Day on June 12, the State Director called on citizens to continue to uphold democratic values, promote peaceful coexistence, and support government efforts towards national development. He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, patriotic, and committed to the ideals of unity, tolerance, and responsible citizenship as enshrined in the National Values Charter.

Dr. Tukur reaffirmed the commitment of the National Orientation Agency to promoting public awareness, civic responsibility, and national unity through continuous engagement with citizens across the country.

NOA LAGOS STATE DIRECTORATE MONITORS MONTHLY ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION EXERCISE ACROSS 57 LGAS AND LCDAS

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lagos State Directorate, on Saturday, 30th May, 2026, deployed its officers across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the State to monitor the monthly environmental sanitation exercise reintroduced by the Lagos State Government.

The monitoring exercise, which took place between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., coincided with the restriction of movement approved by the State Government to enable residents clean their homes, business premises, drainage channels, markets, and other public spaces.

NOA officers, including Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officers (COMOs), were stationed across communities to observe compliance levels, engage residents, and reinforce public awareness on the importance of environmental cleanliness and proper waste management. The officers also used the opportunity to educate citizens on their civic responsibilities and the need to maintain a healthy environment as a collective obligation.

Reports from various LGAs and LCDAs indicated appreciable compliance by residents, community leaders, traders, artisans, transport operators, and other stakeholders who participated in the sanitation exercise. The exercise further provided a platform for direct engagement with members of the public on environmental sustainability and community development.

The Agency emphasized that environmental sanitation is not only a public health necessity but also a civic responsibility that contributes to the overall development and wellbeing of society. Residents were encouraged to make environmental cleanliness a daily habit rather than limiting it to designated sanitation periods.

NOA also linked the exercise to the National Values Charter (NVC), particularly the 7 for 7 Citizens' Code, which promotes responsibility, patriotism, community service, respect for public property, and duty of care. The Agency noted that keeping the environment clean reflects citizens' commitment to these national values and contributes to building a safer, healthier, and more prosperous society.

The Agency further encouraged Lagos residents to continue complying with environmental regulations and to actively participate in subsequent sanitation exercises scheduled to hold on the last Saturday of every month. Citizens were reminded that environmental protection remains a shared responsibility and that collective action is essential to sustaining the cleanliness and livability of Lagos State.

NOA Lagos State Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to supporting government policies and programmes through continuous public enlightenment, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy aimed at promoting positive behavioural change among citizens.
