As Kogi State marks 35 years of its creation, I warmly congratulate His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, on this remarkable anniversary.

I also extend my congratulations to the good people of Kogi State, whose resilience, unity and determination have continued to shape the story of our dear state.

Thirty-five years is more than a number.

It also represents three and a half decades of growth, challenges, achievements and renewed hope.

Since her creation in 1991, Kogi State has continued to occupy a unique position in Nigeria, blessed with abundant human and natural resources and strategically located at the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers.

Today, we celebrate not only where Kogi has been, but also where we are going.

Under the leadership of His Excellency, our administration remains committed to creating an environment where businesses can grow, industries can thrive, investors can find opportunities, and our people can prosper.

As Kogi Commissioner for Commerce & Industry, I am particularly proud of the progress being made in strengthening commerce, supporting enterprise and creating opportunities for investment across the state.

Our responsibility is clear.

We must continue to build an economy that creates opportunities for our people and makes Kogi State an attractive destination for businesses and investors.

The 35th anniversary therefore gives us an opportunity to reflect on our journey while looking ahead with renewed determination.

KOGI GOVERNMENT AND SME STAKEHOLDERS COMMIT TO ENHANCING UNITY AND DEVELOPING A CENTRALIZED DATABASE FOR MSME ADVANCEMENT

As part of Governor Ododo’s continued effort to strengthen collaboration and chart a strategic path for commercial growth in Kogi State, the State Government, through the Kogi Ministry of Commerce and Industry, convened a stakeholders' meeting with operators and associations within the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) ecosystem, at the State Secretariat, Lokoja.

The meeting which had representatives from the Kogi Enterprise Development Agency (KEDA), the Federation of Informal Workers of Nigeria (FIWON), the Kogi State Market Men and Women Association, alongside other associations drawn from the informal and small business sector, sought to strengthening unity, build a centralized Database and map out a strategic measurable plan to empowering SMEs in the state.

Honourable Commissioner for Commerce & Industry, Alh. Muhammed Muktar shuaibu, reiterated how important & vital SMEs are to the vision of His Excellency, Kogi State Governor, Alh. Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, stating that “it is important for everyone to work. Artisans, small business owners alike all have a role to play in Kogi, which is something the Governor is very passionate about. No one should be left idle without finding out what they're good at & would want to do”

The Commissioner who referenced the Chinese model as a means of entrepreneurship & longevity, also explained how gatherings like this are crucial for growth & adaptability in an ever changing society.

Earlier declaring the meeting's purpose, the Secretary SME of the Ministry, Mrs Victoria Osasona, explained that the gathering was convened not merely for deliberation but to arrive at something strategic, stressing that the population and productivity of the State's MSMEs directly determine the growth of Kogi State as a whole, and that contributions were welcome from every level, since useful ideas are not the preserve of any one office.

Chipping in, Permanent Secretary, Hajiya Musa-Amana Sualihat in her own remarks, commended the Commissioner, describing his presence as proof that the outcomes of the meeting would carry political weight, while urging stakeholders to bring genuine commitment rather than repeat old approaches and expecting new results..

Hajiya Sualihat who touched on unity of purpose, also emphasized the need for teamwork among the different associations and the Ministry, with Stakeholders agreeing that although they represented different organizations and constituencies, they shared one common goal, and resolved to see themselves as one family working toward that goal rather than operating in isolation.
Federation of Informal Workers of Nigeria (FIWON) representative, Maryam Usman described associations trusting one another enough to share contacts, information and support without hesitation.

Kogi State Market Men and Women Association representative, Abdullsalam Danjana, also called for cooperation to be extended into governance itself, proposing that stakeholders be formally integrated into the Ministry's SME policy meetings and committees, so that grassroots ideas can feed directly into policy rather than being gathered only at periodic stakeholder engagements.

While discussing the modalities for a centralized database, KEDA representatives, Mr. Akin Akinola & Usman Zubari informed stakeholders of an ongoing drive to register 10,000 MSMEs and informal sector operators with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in phases, with the first and second batches already completed and the process ongoing, an initiative undertaken in support of a similar nationwide push by the Federal Government to register 250,000 MSMEs under the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).

It was also explained that CAC and SMEDAN registration would give government a reliable, retrievable database of businesses by sector and location, making it easier to target support and empowerment programs to specific categories of operators, and that association heads, who already hold membership records for their unions, would be engaged by the Ministry's zonal officers to compile and standardize this data into a single, unified template covering all registered associations.

Federation of Informal Workers of Nigeria (FIWON) President, Comr. Olarewanju Bolaji, also shared how its internal cooperative scheme allows members to save flexibly and access emergency loans of up to twice their savings at a modest interest rate, without collateral, describing it as a safer and more accessible model than commercial bank lending, with stakeholders agreeing that every association without an existing cooperative structure be encouraged to establish one.

On access to formal credit, stakeholders reviewed ongoing engagement with Banks, disclosing that they're also pursuing a matching-fund arrangement from international partners, including the African Development Bank, to widen access to grants, with stakeholders agreeing that financial literacy and business management training must accompany any funding support, since capital given to untrained beneficiaries is often mismanaged or lost.

Furthermore, there was also a review of the state of skills acquisition infrastructure, at the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) centre used for Kogi State trainees, with KEDA commended for having independently secured a modern training facility in Okene, sourced through a private philanthropic connection facilitated via the Office of the Vice President, with capacity for about 300 trainees at a time in tailoring, leather work and upholstery, and equipped with specialized machinery, with the resolve to exploring how to replicate similar facilities in the Kogi East and West senatorial districts, through renewed engagement with private industrialists and corporate social responsibility partnerships.

In his closing remarks, the Honourable Commissioner commended stakeholders for their contributions, encouraging associations and officials alike to take personal responsibility for mentoring idle youths within their communities, and reaffirmed that the State Government remained open to every opportunity that could benefit small businesses in Kogi State.

‎KOGI GOVERNMENT FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY COMMISSION VERIFIES MINISTRY RECORDS, STRENGTHENS TRANSPARENCY, AND ACCOUNTABILITY

‎As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen fiscal discipline, promote transparency and enhance accountability in the management of public resources, the Kogi State Fiscal Responsibility Commission (KG-FRC) has conducted a verification exercise at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to assess the Ministry's compliance with the provisions of the Kogi State Fiscal Responsibility Law.
‎
‎The exercise, held at the Ministry's headquarters in Lokoja, formed part of the Commission's routine oversight of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), with emphasis on budget implementation, revenue generation, expenditure management and statutory financial reporting.
‎
‎Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Alh. Muhammed Muktar shuaibu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Hajia Sualihat Musa Amana, welcomed the team and reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to maintaining high standards of accountability, transparency and compliance in the discharge of its responsibilities.

‎She noted that the Ministry would continue to align its financial management processes with extant laws and government policies, while ensuring that public resources entrusted to it are managed responsibly in support of the economic development agenda of the Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo-led administration.

‎Earlier, the verification team on behalf of the Executive Chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission, Mallam Jimoh A. Muhammed, the Commission Secretary, Prince Emmanuel Ayo, said the exercise was designed to ensure compliance with fiscal responsibility standards while encouraging prudent management of government resources across MDAs.

‎Ayo explained that the Commission's mandate goes beyond regulatory oversight to supporting public institutions in entrenching transparency, accountability and sound financial management, adding that periodic verification exercises provide opportunities to review records, identify areas requiring improvement and strengthen compliance with established fiscal procedures.

‎Commending the Ministry for making the required documents available for the exercise and encouraged management to sustain accurate documentation and timely financial reporting as essential components of good governance and responsible public administration, the verification exercise also featured a detailed review of key financial and administrative records, including the Ministry's nominal roll, approved budget, budget performance reports and internally generated revenue records, with officials providing clarifications and supporting documentation where necessary.

‎Director of Monitoring and Statistics, Bello Joseph, during the interactive session, also engaged officials of the Ministry on issues relating to budget implementation, expenditure patterns, revenue performance and compliance with fiscal reporting requirements, while Director of Policy and Strategy, Abubakar T. Musa, also made contributions on policy and institutional compliance during the exercise.

‎The engagement provided both the Commission and the Ministry with an opportunity to exchange professional insights on strengthening fiscal governance, improving financial reporting systems and sustaining accountability in public service.

KOGI GOVT'S AJAOKUTA FREE TRADE ZONE AGENDA GETS BOOST AS SOYUZNIK ALUMNI HOLDS POLICY DIALOGUE, INAUGURATES NEW EXCO

His Excellency, Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has consistently identified the revival of the Ajaokuta Steel Complex and the industrialization of the state as central pillars of his administration's economic agenda.

In furtherance of this vision, and in recognition of the recently approved Ajaokuta Free Trade Zone (FTZ), the Soyuznik Alumni Association, Nigeria, Kogi State Branch, on Wednesday convened its 2026 Annual Congress and Policy Dialogue, themed "Ajaokuta Free Trade Zone: Unlocking Kogi State's Industrial and Economic Renaissance," at Good Shepherd Hotels, Lokoja.

The event, which combined the branch's substantive executive elections, its Annual General Meeting, and a policy dialogue session, brought together government officials, industry stakeholders, development partners, and members of the association, who are graduates of Russian and former Soviet Union institutions.

In a keynote address, the Director, Administration, Mr Ejeh Michael, representing the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Alh. Muhammed Muktar shuaibu, outlined the state government's strategic pillars for driving industrialization through the Ajaokuta Free Trade Zone.

These include infrastructure development around power, roads, rail, and gas connectivity; investor-first incentives such as tax holidays and duty-free importation of machinery; a shift towards value-added processing in steel, agro-commodities, and solid minerals rather than raw material exports; and a commitment to local content, skills transfer, and environmental compliance.

He noted that the Ministry, under the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, remains open to partnerships with investors, development partners, and diaspora stakeholders to reposition Kogi State as a preferred destination for manufacturing and export-driven industries in West and Central Africa.

State Chairman of Soyuznik Alumni Association, Hajia Rekiya Onaivo Sanni, on her own part, described the Ajaokuta Free Trade Zone as a historic opportunity for Kogi State, noting that the association's members, by virtue of their training and technical backgrounds, were well positioned to contribute meaningfully to the state's industrial and economic development.

The Chairman who commended the recent presidential approval of Ajaokuta as a free trade zone, also called for sustained advocacy and engagement between the association and relevant government institutions to ensuring the initiative achieves its full potential.

Delivering a keynote address on behalf of the National President of Soyuznik Alumni Association, Dr Wakiente Omubo, Engr. A.A. Yusuf commended the Kogi State branch for choosing a timely and strategic theme, noting that the state's central location, mineral resources, and agricultural potential position it to become a major industrial hub if the free trade zone is properly harnessed, assuring the branch of the national body's continued support for initiatives promoting education, research, and evidence-based public policy.

Also speaking on behalf of the Director-General of the Kogi State Commodity Exchange, Export Promotion and Market Development Agency (KOSCEPA), Chief Adewale Victor Omofaiye, the agency's representative, Hon. Oluseyi Kelvin, highlighted the state government's ongoing initiatives to strengthen trade development, including the licensing of the Ajaokuta Free Trade Zone, the revival of Ajaokuta Steel Company through a recent gas supply partnership with the NNPC, the Kogi State Cashew Trade Policy, and subsidised CAC registration for small businesses.

The representative described the agency's mandate as serving as a bridge linking farmers, processors, and global markets under the framework of the free trade zone.

Furthermore, representative of the International Fund for Agricultural Development's Value Chain Development Programme (IFAD/VCDP), Mr Yinka Victor Adewale, standing in for the State Programme Coordinator, Dr Stella Adejo, delivered a presentation on strengthening agricultural value chains and unlocking opportunities through agribusiness, outlining the strategic advantages of the Ajaokuta Free Trade Zone for agriculture, including its proximity to major transport corridors and its potential to support agro-processing, market expansion, and investment attraction, while also identifying infrastructure gaps, limited access to finance, and weak processing capacity as key challenges requiring coordinated policy intervention.

Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Kogi State Branch, Engr. Emmanuel Adamu, also commended the association for convening a platform aimed at supporting inclusive, evidence-based economic growth, and used the opportunity to invite engineers within the gathering to join the Society's ongoing activities in the state.

The House of Representatives Member representing Ajaokuta Federal Constituency, Hon. Sanni Abdulraheem Egidi, who served as guest speaker, described the Ajaokuta Free Trade Zone as a long-awaited turning point for the state and his constituency, highlighting existing infrastructure assets around Ajaokuta, including rail linkages to the Warri Port, road corridors, and available housing stock, which he said would support investors coming into the zone.

He commended the Kogi State Government's shift from a civil-service-dependent economy towards industrialisation and job creation, and pledged his continued legislative support for the actualisation of the free trade zone.

Participants also highlighted job creation opportunities linked to the proposed international airport project and received assurances of continued moral and financial support for the actualisation of the Ajaokuta Free Trade Zone.

At the end of deliberations, resolutions, including confirmation that the free trade zone is export-ready, a call for stronger collaboration and partnership among all stakeholders, and an emphasis on the paradigm shift required to transition Kogi State from decades of civil-service dependence to an industrial economy.

KOGI GOVT DEEPENS PARTNERSHIP WITH NYSC AT 2026 CORPS EMPLOYERS’ WORKSHOP

As part of Kogi's abiding commitment to the welfare and development of young Nigerians serving in the state, and in recognition of the vital role Corps Members play in driving service delivery across public and private institutions, the State Government, through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, participated in the 2026 Corps Employers' Workshop organised by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The workshop which took place at the NYSC Hall, State Secretariat, Lokoja, themed “Functioning Stakeholders' Collaboration to Enhance Corps Members' Welfare and Workplace Experience,” brought together representatives of ministries, departments, agencies, and other organisations, as part of NYSC's ongoing engagement with employers to strengthen the one-year mandatory service scheme for Nigerian graduates.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Alh. Muhammed Muktar shuaibu, represented by the Director, Administration, Mr Ejeh Michael, was part of the dignitaries in attendance at the programme, who commended NYSC for the initiative, while describing continuous engagement between employers and the Scheme as very vital to resolving field-level challenges before they escalate.

Michael who reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to providing a conducive working environment for corps members posted to its various departments, also pledged that the Ministry will continue cooperate with NYSC in addressing welfare concerns as they arise.

In response, NYSC officials used the opportunity to reiterate the Scheme's guidelines on relocation, clarifying that requests for transfer from one state to another are only considered on strict grounds of ill health, marriage, or genuine security concerns, and urged employers to continue reporting such cases through appropriate channels rather than resolve them informally.

A key highlight of the workshop was an interactive technical session, during which representatives of corps-employing organisations, including the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, engaged directly with NYSC management on recurring challenges affecting the placement and welfare of corps members.

Issues raised during the session included cases of corps members who default on attendance at their places of primary assignment, as well as instances of corps members relocating from their assigned duty posts without proper authorisation.

The session formed part of NYSC's broader objective of fostering coherent, results-driven dialogue between the Scheme and corps-employing organisations, with outcomes expected to feed into recommendations for improving the overall welfare and workplace experience of corps members posted across the state.

The engagement aligns with Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo administration's broader agenda of investing in the state's human capital and youth development, and its continued support for federal institutions working to improve the experience of young Nigerians undergoing national service across the state.

GOVERNOR ODODO PRESENTS GRANTS, CAC CERTIFICATES TO SME BENEFICIARIES AS PART OF ONGOING ENTERPRISE EMPOWERMENT DRIVE

In recognition of the critical role small businesses play in driving job creation, reducing poverty, and strengthening local economies, the Kogi State Government has continued to deepen its support for entrepreneurs across the state through direct empowerment initiatives targeted at formalizing and funding small enterprises.

In furtherance of this commitment, His Excellency, Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, presented Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) certificates and financial grants to a cross-section of small business owners in Kogi State, at an event organized by the Kogi Enterprise Development Agency (KEDA) at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Lokoja.

The gesture formed part of the wider distribution of CAC certificates to beneficiaries and the launch of the SMEs Business Support Cooperative, an initiative of the state government aimed at formalizing small businesses and improving their access to funding, training, and market opportunities.

The Governor who was represented by the Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Comrade Joel Salifu, carried out a symbolic presentation of CAC certificates to a select number of beneficiaries drawn from various trades, formally recognising the completion of their business registration process with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

In addition to the certificates, cheques were presented to selected entrepreneurs under a support scheme facilitated through the collaboration of KEDA with private-sector partners, whose contributions were channelled toward empowering beneficiaries drawn from trades such as tailoring, food vending, phone repairs, and small-scale trading.

Speaking during the presentation, officials of KEDA noted that the gesture was designed to give beneficiaries a head start following their training and registration, describing it as a demonstration of government's commitment to ensuring that support for entrepreneurs goes beyond paperwork to tangible assistance.

The Deputy Governor, used the opportunity to reaffirm the state government's commitment to supporting micro, small and medium enterprises, noting that empowering businesses remains one of the fastest ways to reduce poverty and stimulate economic activity across communities in the state, commending the recipients for taking the bold step of formalizing their businesses and charged them to put the grants to judicious use in growing their enterprises.

As part of ongoing efforts to formalize small businesses, expand access to finance, and build a more resilient enterprise ecosystem across the state, the Kogi State Government, through the Kogi Enterprise Development Agency (KEDA), on Monday distributed Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) certificates to hundreds of beneficiaries and formally launched the SMEs Business Support Cooperative, at an event held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Lokoja.

The event, which had His Excellency, Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, as Chief Host, was attended by members of the Executive Council, heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, representatives of financial institutions and development partners, and traders' associations respectively.

Delivering his address, His Excellency, Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, said the event was more than a ceremonial occasion, describing it as a demonstration of his administration's commitment to empowering residents to become employers of labour rather than job seekers.

The Governor who was ably represented by the Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Comrade Joel Salifu, explained how small and medium enterprises remain the backbone of every thriving economy, reiterating that business registration opens the door to credit facilities, government interventions, investment opportunities, and participation in wider markets.

Comrade Salifu urged beneficiaries to operate with integrity, maintain proper financial records, pay their taxes, and use their new legal status to build businesses capable of creating employment for others, commending the leadership of KEDA for advancing enterprise development in the state and formally declared the CAC certificate distribution and the launch of the SME Business Support Cooperative officially inaugurated

Kogi Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Alh. Muhammed Muktar shuaibu, on his keynote address, described the occasion as a landmark event marking two complementary milestones; the formal transformation of informal businesses into recognised legal entities through CAC registration, and the establishment of a support structure to nurture and sustain those enterprises through the newly launched cooperative.

The Commissioner who was ably represented by the SME Secretary, Mrs Osasona Victoria noted that many traders, artisans, and farmers in the state had for long operated outside the formal economy, not for lack of ambition but due to the perceived cost and distance of registration, explaining that this barrier had now been removed.

Mrs Victoria described each CAC certificate as a pathway to credit, government contracts, grants, and partnerships that were previously out of reach, and charged beneficiaries to keep proper business records, pay their taxes as at when due, and operate with integrity as the foundation for lasting business success, reaffirmingg the commitment of the Kogi State Government to the continued growth of small and medium enterprises across the state.

Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Asiwaju Asiru Idris, on his goodwill message, informed beneficiaries that businesses with a capital base of ₦100 million and below are currently exempted from certain tax obligations under a new federal policy, while urging entrepreneurs to still file their returns as required.

Hon. Asiwaju who linked the day's event to the state's long-term 32-year development agenda, noted that the government's support for cooperative formation was designed to strengthen the collective bargaining power of small businesses and improve their access to financing, including funds already earmarked for women entrepreneurs in the state.

Earlier, Managing Director of KEDA, Alh. Muhammed Kadiri Okeji, in his welcome address, described the event as a significant milestone in the collective effort of the Kogi State Government to build a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem that empowers residents, creates sustainable jobs, and accelerates economic growth, noting that business registration gives entrepreneurs legal recognition, improves their credibility, and enhances their ability to access financing and participate in government and private sector opportunities.

The MD who described the newly launched SMEs Business Support Cooperative as a strategic platform through which entrepreneurs can access affordable financing, business advisory services, market opportunities, and capacity-building programmes, also reaffirmed KEDA's commitment to designing programmes that promote entrepreneurship among youths, women-owned businesses, and rural enterprises.

Highlight of the event was the presentation delivered by Prof. John Alabi, who spoke on the importance of cooperative movements to entrepreneurship development.

The Professor identified weak leadership and governance, poor financial record-keeping, and limited networking as key challenges affecting cooperative societies in the sub-region, and urged members of the newly launched cooperative to embrace unity, transparency, and collaboration to achieve sustainable growth.

The occasion also featured the formal presentation of a partnership between KEDA and All-Encompassing Global Consult Limited, aimed at providing beneficiaries with structured training in financial management, bookkeeping, marketing, and enterprise governance, as part of continued efforts to support entrepreneurs beyond the point of registration.

Speaking on behalf of the Kogi State Traders Association, the association's chairman commended the state government's continued engagement with the business community and appealed for improved access to affordable cooperative-based financing to reduce traders' reliance on informal high-interest lending sources.

The event was rounded off with the symbolic presentation of CAC certificates to a cross-section of beneficiaries, alongside grants presented to selected entrepreneurs under the state's ongoing empowerment initiatives, and a group photograph session.
