Igila Ofifi Festival 2026 live

18/09/2026

CULTURE IS THE WAY OF LIFE

As Magongo prepares for Igila Ofifi this Saturday, we celebrate a tradition that carries the strength, identity, and heritage of our people.

Igila Ofifi is a traditional cultural practice in Magongo where men are tested for endurance, patience, courage, and resilience. It is more than a celebration—it is a reminder of the values passed down from our ancestors from one generation to another.

Through Igila Ofifi, our people come together to preserve our culture, strengthen unity, and give the younger generation an opportunity to understand and appreciate the traditions of Magongo.

This Saturday 19 September 2026, let us come together to witness, celebrate, and preserve our heritage.

Igila Ofifi — Culture, Strength, Endurance and Heritage.

The New Yam Festival in Magongo, Kogi State, is one of the community's oldest cultural celebrations. It is an annual harvest festival held to thank God for a successful farming season, celebrate the first harvest of yam, and pray for greater harvests in the coming year. Like many farming communities in Nigeria, yam occupies a central place in the economic and cultural life of the people.
Historical Background
Magongo is an agrarian community where yam farming has long been a major occupation. Traditionally, the people believed that no one should eat newly harvested yams until the community had officially celebrated the New Yam Festival. This marked the end of one farming season and the beginning of another. The festival also served as a period of thanksgiving, reconciliation, and communal unity.
