Rebuilding PDP: All Hands Already on Deck
- BOD ORIADE
Yesterday, only hours after the previous day inauguration of the PDP National Caretaker Committee (PDPNCC), members swung into action with deep patriotism and renewed vigour; planning, organizing, and mobilizing to rescue the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) within the stipulated 60 days.
Those sworn in, empowered by the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC), had opted to do the needful. Instead of clinging to office beyond their mandate or hiding behind questionable technicalities of status quo, they chose what is lawful and honourable. Section 47(1) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), paraphrasing, clearly states that officers of the party shall hold office for a first term of four years and qualify for another term.
Then, it is evident that the leadership of Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu is guided by the rule of law, and rejects impunity.
It was on this same premise that the NEC acted on Sunday, December 7, 2025, and inaugurated the new National Caretaker Committee (NCC). The Committee is charged with a clear mandate: immediately conclude pending congresses and hold a national convention to produce a new National Executive Committee (NEC). This assignment is already in motion.
Also, on July 12, 2017, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, under 3-man panel led by Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour declared Senator Ahmed Makarfi led Caretaker Committee legal. Therefore, the culture of having a Caretaker is not alien to PDP.
At present, Lagos, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Delta, Bayelsa, Oyo, Enugu, and Anambra States, among others, are under Caretaker arrangements. The PDPNCC is now preparing to conduct congresses across affected states to ensure substantive party structures.
The atmosphere is active and purposeful. Forms and electoral materials are being prepared; PDP statewide organs are being awakened. The goal is to correct the impunity witnessed in the Ibadan convention and demonstrate to Nigeria how a national convention should be legitimately conducted. There will be no fraud. The entire process will be well monitored and transparently reported.
Just yesterday, regarding the Ibadan convention debacle, the court graciously delisted INEC from the matter. By implication, dragging INEC in contempt is needless. INEC must obey orders of the Federal High Court; not out of discretion, but as a matter of law and order.
This renewed tempo reflects the administrative capability and unifying leadership of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who continues to reassure Nigerians that the PDP remains home for all. True to the political temperament of Dee Sam Mbakwe, he embodies “politics without bitterness.” To Anyanwu, politics is about the people. Little wonder why the people are at home with the People’s Senator.
With Capt. Umar Bature providing experienced coordination, mobilization is ongoing with due regard to procedure, while the party fosters peace, unity, and justice. In the same vein, Barr. Kamaldeen Ajibade brings legal expertise to forestall landmines as PDP moves forward.
We call on members across states with upcoming congresses to position themselves accordingly. This is another opportunity - seize it. PDP is building new structures in these states and beyond. We call upon elders, women, youth, and grassroots stakeholders to rise to the challenge. Together, we will rescue the PDP.
There is no doubt, the Mohammed/Anyanwu leadership has come to restore the true essence of politics: politics of value, politics of participation. With the growing support base, the PDP will reclaim its footing.
We extend special appreciation to Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), and others who have placed party interest above material gains. With renewed determination and collective effort, PDP will bounce back. We do not need governors to win elections; we need the people.
Let us unite, strengthen the PDP, and rebuild for victory ahea
