Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, FCVSN, Executive Secretary, NUC, attended the induction ceremony for new members of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria at the University of Abuja’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine held on 9th February 2026

In his address, he urged the inductees to lead by example and carry out their professional responsibilities with integrity and dedication. He also encouraged them to embrace advancements in Artificial Intelligence and integrate emerging technologies into veterinary practice.

Professor Ribadu expressed appreciation to the Chancellor, members of the University’s Governing Board, and the Vice-Chancellor for their vital role in providing quality training to the newly inducted professionals.

He concluded by wishing the inductees a successful and impactful career in veterinary medicine.

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, celebrated its 45th Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, 31 January 2026, with the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu FCVSN, in attendance.

The University graduated a total of 27,370 students, comprising 610 PhD graduates, 6,923 master’s degree holders, 61 MPhil graduates, 957 Postgraduate Diploma recipients, and 18,819 undergraduate degree recipients across various disciplines and classes.

The ceremony was attended by the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmed, who represented the Visitor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR; the Governor of Kano State, H.E. The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu FCVSN, attended the Pre Convocation Lecture, held on Friday, 30th January 2026, as part of activities marking the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria’s 45th Convocation ceremony.

Her Excellency Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala CFR, Director General of the World Trade Organization, delivered a compelling lecture titled “Challenges and opportunities for Africa and Nigeria in the present global geo-political and geo-strategic context.” She shared compelling insights on how Africa and Nigeria can navigate a complex and shifting global order, stressing that today’s challenges are surmountable with effective, proactive leadership and committed followership.

The lecture was chaired by former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR, represented by the Pro Chancellor of ABU, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed CFR. Also in attendance were His Majesty, Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe CFR, the Obi of Onitsha and Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, the Emir of Zaria, Alhaji Nuhu Bamalli, and other distinguished guests, academics, and stakeholders.

University of Lagos and University of Birmingham sign MoU under Nigeria’s Transnational Education framework.

The University of Lagos and the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding under Nigeria’s Transnational Education framework, opening new pathways for joint research, staff and student exchanges, and collaborative academic programmes.

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu FCVSN, attended the signing and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring quality standards, meaningful knowledge exchange, and providing clear guidance for transnational partnerships.

The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa CON, at the event, described the partnership as a strong reflection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the National Education Sector Renewal Initiative, noting that such collaborations are vital to positioning Nigerian universities on the global stage.

The agreement was signed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola and the Provost of the University of Birmingham, Professor Nick Vaughan-Williams with attendance by the British Deputy High Commissioner, the Country Director of the British Council, the Executive Secretary of TETFund (represented), staff of both universities, and other key stakeholders.

*FG Reaches Agreement with ASUU*

The Federal Government has reached an agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) following the renegotiation of the 2009 FG - ASUU Agreement.

The agreement, signed on 23rd December 2025, reflects the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR to advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda and the resolve of the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, to strengthening university education.

*Highlights of the Agreement*

1. 40% upward review of academic staff salaries.
2. Earned Academic Allowances to be mainstreamed into academic staff salaries from 1 January 2026.
3. Establishment of a ₦30 billion Stabilisation and Restoration Fund to be disbursed over 3 years.
4. Commitment to a proposed National Research Council Bill to provide at least 1% of GDP for research and development.
5. Strengthening of university autonomy and academic freedom.
6. New funding approaches with dedicated allocations for teaching and research equipment, curriculum development and quality assurance, libraries, direct teaching and laboratory costs and staff development
7. NUC to coordinate monitoring of implementation across the system.
8. The provisions take effect from 1 January 2026, with a comprehensive review scheduled every 3 years.
9. The NUC to coordinate the Implementation Monitoring Committee.

Discussions are ongoing with SSANU, NASU, NAAT, NAMDA, CONUA, as well as unions in polytechnics and colleges of education, as part of broader efforts to improve conditions across the tertiary education sector.

On Tuesday, January 13th, 2025, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), participated in a strategic planning workshop hosted by Tetfund. The workshop, attended by heads of beneficiary institutions and other stakeholders, focused on outlining the 2026 disbursement guidelines.

During the event, Tetfund announced its 2026 interventions, committing ₦6.5 billion to tertiary institutions. Professor Ribadu emphasized Tetfund’s critical contributions to Nigerian higher education, highlighting its impact on:

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, FCVSN, on Friday, December 19, 2025, attended the 5th Convocation Ceremony of PAMO University of Medical Sciences, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The event also marked the university’s 8th Founders’ Day.

Addressing the graduating students, Prof. Ribadu congratulated them and charged them to uphold the values of PAMO University as worthy ambassadors.

In his goodwill message, he encouraged the university to fully leverage the flexibility of the CCMAS, particularly the 30% institution-driven content, to collaborate with industry experts, align research with societal needs, and prepare graduates for the evolving labour market.

He reaffirmed the NUC’s commitment to supporting Nigerian universities through effective regulation to ensure compliance with minimum academic standards.

On December 16, 2025, a delegation led by Omo Oaiya, Chief Strategy Officer of WACREN, met with Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu FCVSN, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), to discuss collaboration on digital access for academic resources in Nigeria.

The delegation, representing the National Coordination for Open Access Publishing and Digital Scholarship, sought NUC’s support in improving the digital accessibility of journals, articles, books, and repositories. This initiative aims to broaden the reach of knowledge generated by Nigerian scholars and researchers.

Professor Ribadu expressed his appreciation for the visit and pledged the NUC’s full support for the collaboration. To facilitate this, a committee was established to implement the framework for open access and scholarship in Nigeria.
