The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Benue State, participated in a radio programme on Agate Radio 95.5 FM Makurdi titled, Beyond the Ballot”, the theme was, “The Review of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) Exercise in Benue State Ahead of the 2027 General Elections."

The programme focused on reviewing the recently concluded CVR exercise, preparations for the 2027 General Elections, voter participation, and other critical electoral issues.

During the programme, the Head of Unit, Voter Registration Process, of the ICT & Voter Registey Department, Mrs. Iember Adzape, highlighted that the CVR exercise was largely successful, recording significant participation from eligible citizens across the State, particularly young people. She further explained that while the exercise had officially ended, all registration data would undergo the Commission's standard verification and data-cleaning processes before the final register of voters is published.

The Commission also clarified that the final Local Government Area-by-Local Government Area breakdown of new registrations, transfers, replacement requests, and updates would be released after the completion of the verification process.

Consequently, members of the public were advised to rely only on official INEC publications for authentic registration statistics.

On the issue of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), the Commission assured registrants that the production and distribution of new PVCs would commence after the completion of all statutory registration processes. Eligible registrants were encouraged to await official announcements regarding the dates, venues, and procedures for PVC collection. The Commission also reiterated its commitment to intensifying voter education campaigns to encourage the collection of both newly produced and previously uncollected PVCs.

The Head of Unit, further addressed voter apathy and emphasised that sustained voter education remains a key priority for the Commission. Reaffirming the INEC’s commitment to collaborating with political parties, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), civil society organisations, the media, traditional and religious institutions, youth groups, and other stakeholders to promote civic education, strengthen public confidence, and encourage greater participation in the electoral process.

Responding to questions on the restoration of constituencies in Benue State, she stated that INEC remains committed to implementing valid court judgments in accordance with the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and all applicable legal procedures, while awaiting the completion of all necessary legal processes where applicable.

In conclusion, Mrs. Adzape reassured the people of Benue State of the Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, inclusive, and transparent elections in 2027. Citizens were encouraged to collect their Permanent Voter Cards when available, obtain electoral information from official INEC sources, participate peacefully in the electoral process, and continue to play their role in strengthening Nigeria's democracy.

On Thursday, 23rd July 2026, the Executive Council (EXCO) and leadership of the National Union of Benue State Students (NUBESS), led by its President, Comrade Shondo Samuel, paid a courtesy and familiarization visit to the Honourable Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), INEC Benue State, Mallam Aminu Kasimu Idris, at the Commission's State Headquarters in Makurdi.

In his remarks, the NUBESS President stated that the visit was aimed at fostering a cordial relationship with the Commission, noting that young people constitute the largest electoral constituency in the country. He explained that the NUBESS leadership comprises students from tertiary institutions within and outside Benue State and expressed the Union's desire to collaborate with INEC on youth-focused voter education initiatives. He further informed the REC of the Union's forthcoming awareness programme on electoral participation and requested his presence to enlighten students on electoral matters.

Responding, the Honourable REC welcomed the delegation and commended the Union for the initiative. He began by asking members whether they were registered voters and urged them to make proper use of their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) by participating actively in elections. He encouraged them to vote objectively rather than along sentimental or sectional lines.

The REC further charged the student leaders to encourage their members to remain conscious of national issues and to hold public office holders accountable in a respectful and constructive manner. He advised them to present their views objectively, engage relevant authorities through dialogue, shun violent protests and abusive conduct, and instead embrace diplomacy and peaceful engagement. Describing the students as the future of Benue State and Nigeria, he urged them to think long-term and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.

The REC also enlightened the delegation on the statutory responsibilities of INEC, explaining that the Commission administers elections and can only effectively discharge its mandate in a peaceful and secure environment. He therefore urged the students to always promote peace and order while serving as credible sources of electoral information within their various institutions.
Speaking on the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, the REC reminded the students that the exercise would end on Sunday, 26th July, 2026, and appealed to them to disseminate the information to their colleagues and other eligible citizens. He reiterated the Commission's commitment to promoting youth participation in the electoral process and assured the delegation that the Department of Voter Education, Publicity, Gender and Civil Society Liaison (VEPGCO) remains open to collaborating with youth and student organizations in advancing voter education and civic engagement.

Heads of Departments present at the meeting, made remarks. The Head of Department, Finance and Account charged the students to uphold integrity and patriotism in their engagements. The Head of Department, ICT and Voter Registry, noted that youths constitute nearly 70 percent of registered voters and therefore possess the numerical strength to shape the nation's future. He encouraged them to take active interest in politics and elections, emphasizing that many election duties are entrusted to young people who serve as ad hoc personnel. He urged them to think creatively and educate their peers on the importance of peaceful democratic participation.
Similarly, the Head of Department, Electoral Operations, commended the diversity of the NUBESS leadership, describing its composition as reflective of students from institutions both within and outside Benue State. He charged the students to mobilize their peers to participate actively in politics while rejecting electoral violence, thuggery, and other undemocratic practices.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Head of Department, General Administration and Procurement, Alhaji Bala Liman, expressed appreciation to the NUBESS leadership for the visit. He reaffirmed that INEC Benue State remains committed to strengthening partnerships with youth and student bodies in promoting credible elections, civic responsibility, and democratic values.

On Wednesday, 22nd July, 2026, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), INEC Benue State, Mallam Aminu Kasimu Idris, received the Zonal Director of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Makurdi Zonal Network Centre, Asabe Ak-Mordi, alongside members of the station's management team and staff, on a courtesy and familiarization visit to the Commission's State Headquarters in Makurdi.

In her remarks, the Zonal Director described INEC and NTA as partners in progress, noting that both institutions share the common responsibility of disseminating timely and credible information to the public. She explained that the visit was aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between the two organizations and reassuring the Commission of NTA Makurdi's readiness to continue serving as a dependable media partner in deepening Nigeria's democracy.
The Director acknowledged the longstanding cordial relationship between NTA and INEC and emphasized the station's commitment to providing improved media support for the Commission's activities. She also expressed appreciation to the Resident Electoral Commissioner and the Management of INEC Benue State for the warm reception accorded to the delegation.

In his response, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, welcomed the team and described NTA as a vital partner in the Commission's electoral process. He noted that there are numerous areas for collaboration, particularly in the area of publicity and voter education, stressing that all INEC activities require extensive public awareness, except the actual act of voting, which must remain secret.

The REC briefed the delegation on the Commission's ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, stating that the tempo of registration had increased as the exercise approaches its closing date of Sunday, 26th July, 2026. He informed the team that the next stage after the CVR exercise would be the display of the register of voters, followed by the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

He further disclosed that PVCs for Phase I of the registration exercise are expected to arrive soon for collection, while the Commission continues with the production of PVCs for Phases II and III. He explained that the Commission was yet to determine whether PVC distribution would take place at the Local Government Offices or designated Registration Areas.

The REC emphasized that voter registration is only meaningful when eligible voters collect their PVCs. He therefore appealed to all residents of Benue State who register to ensure they collect their PVCs and called on NTA to partner with the Commission in extensively publicizing the PVC collection exercise.

Looking ahead to the 2027 General Election, the REC noted that political campaigns would soon commence, with elections scheduled to hold in January and February 2027. He expressed the Commission's desire to sustain its collaboration with NTA throughout the electoral period.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Administrative Secretary, Mr. Shikfu Sim Bewaran, expressed profound appreciation to the Zonal Director and her team for the visit. He described NTA as an invaluable partner whose wide coverage continues to enhance the Commission's public enlightenment efforts. Quoting the station's popular slogan, he remarked that "Nothing beats the reach of NTA," while reaffirming the Commission's commitment to strengthening the partnership for the successful delivery of future electoral activities.
