SARC Strengthens Capacity Through Mental Health Awareness Workshop.

The Benue State Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) has reinforced its commitment to holistic survivor care through participation in a one-day Mental Health Awareness Workshop organized by Initiative for Community Empowerment and Vulnerable Support, I-CEVS.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from the health, government, social services, and community sectors. To deepen understanding of mental health issues, address stigma, and strengthen collaborative responses to psychological distress within our communities.

Throughout the session, it was emphasized the importance of recognizing early warning signs of mental health challenges, addressing harmful misconceptions, and promoting supportive workplace environments. Particularly for frontline professionals regularly exposed to trauma.

Discussions also highlighted the need for improved referral pathways and coordinated partnerships. This is to ensure individuals experiencing psychological distress receive timely and appropriate care.

For SARC, the workshop aligns closely with her survivor-centered and trauma-informed approach.
Survivors of sexual violence often experience emotional and psychological effects that require comprehensive and compassionate support.

By participating in this capacity-building initiative, SARC continues to enhance its ability to provide integrated services that address both the physical and mental wellbeing of survivors.

The Centre remains committed to strengthening partnerships, promoting mental health awareness, and ensuring that stigma does not prevent individuals from seeking the care they deserve.

The Benue Sexual Assault Referral Center (BSARC) is proud to participate in a high-impact Advocacy Hackathon hosted by the Global Women’s Health and Right Empowerment Initiative (GWHREI).
Led by GWHREI Program Manager, Mrs. Doreen Elisha, the session served as a powerful reminder of a mission that began in 2014: dismantling discrimination and ensuring a society where every woman’s rights are fiercely protected.
The meeting centered on eye-opening research regarding menstrual health and dignity. The findings were clear, we are facing a crisis of systemic exclusion. Key barriers identified include:
• Economic Hurdles
• Stigmatization: Cultural and social shaming that silences the conversation.
• Systemic Gaps: A lack of inclusive facilities for women, the q***r community, and intersexual individuals.
This was not just a meeting; it was a "Hackathon" for change. Participants worked to:
• Reflect on emerging insights from marginalized voices.
• Co-create inclusive advocacy strategies that ensure no one is left behind in the fight for menstrual justice.
• Strengthen a united front across diverse organizations and civil societies.
BSARC stand committed with GWHREI in the belief that menstrual dignity is a human right, not a luxury. As the program concluded, the call to action was simple: Continuous, loud, and inclusive advocacy.
We are committed to pushing these boundaries until "Menstrual Justice" is a reality for everyone in Benue State and beyond.
