UKPAKA WRITES
Nigerians have often been described as the architects of their own suffering, and the recent Local Government Area (LGA) elections across Imo State, held on 21st September, provide a stark reminder of this unfortunate reality. The so-called "elections" were nothing more than a grand spectacle, an orchestrated charade by a governor determined to impose his will on the people. In the comfort of his office, the governor handpicked his loyalists, drafted names, and presented them as "elected" officials, in blatant disregard for democratic processes. Yet, despite this obvious travesty, a large section of the population, weighed down by poverty, unemployment, and a rapidly deteriorating standard of living, were seen dancing, clapping, and posting congratulatory messages to celebrate this travesty of justice.
It is baffling that while many Nigerians struggle daily to feed their families, pay rent, meet school fees, and deal with escalating costs of living, they still find the energy to endorse and applaud the impunity of their oppressors. The situation is akin to living in a burning house but celebrating the person who lit the match. Instead of demanding accountability and fairness, people are caught in the frenzy of supporting those in power, thereby perpetuating a system that continues to marginalize and oppress them.
This vicious cycle of complicity is deeply embedded in the psyche of the people, fueled by a culture of sycophancy and fear. Until Nigerians, especially those in states like Imo, begin to speak truth to power, resist the urge to praise corrupt leaders, and demand transparency, there can be no hope for genuine change. True progress will only be possible when people stop glorifying the very individuals who exploit them and instead focus on reclaiming their country, their rights, and their future.
It is time to wake up from this collective hallucination, to stop dancing to the tune of impunity, and to begin dreaming of a nation that truly belongs to the people. Only then can we hope for a better Nigeria.
