SDGs CDS Group Outreach on Education and Sensitization of Secondary Schools in Nsukka on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (May 2025)

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Community Development Service (CDS) Group, under the leadership of the President, Joshua Emmanuel Okon, organized an impactful outreach program on Wednesday, 21st of May 2025. The event took place at Urban Boys Secondary School Nsukka, with the primary aim of promoting awareness and understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals among students and school authorities.

Background and Objectives

In alignment with the global 2030 Agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), our outreach focused on educating young minds about the SDGs and encouraging active involvement in achieving these goals within their local communities.

Objectives:
Our key objectives for the outreach were as follows:

To introduce and explain the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to secondary school students in simple and relatable terms.

To inspire students to take initiative and become young ambassadors for sustainable development.

To foster collaboration between schools and the SDGs CDS Group for future advocacy and development programs.

Activities Carried Out

a. Interactive Classroom Sessions:
We engaged students in informative and interactive classroom sessions where we broke down each of the 17 goals, highlighting how they relate to their everyday lives and future aspirations. Special emphasis was placed on SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

b. Group Discussions and Q&A Segments:
Students participated in group discussions, where they shared ideas and asked questions about global challenges and the role of youth in sustainable development. These conversations enhanced their critical thinking and awareness of global citizenship.

c. Distribution of Educational Materials:
We distributed SDG-themed flyers and simplified charts to aid learning and provide long-term reference for both students and teachers.

d. Engagement with School Authorities:
We held brief meetings with principals and teachers to encourage the integration of SDG concepts into extracurricular activities and school club initiatives.

In conclusion, our CDS group strongly believes that meaningful development begins with education. The outreach program revealed a high level of interest and willingness among students to learn about and contribute to sustainable development efforts.

With collective action and continuous sensitization, we can raise a generation that is informed, empowered, and committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The DO DEEL CDS group had their outreach today, 22nd May 2025, led by the CDS president in person of Ochonogor Godspower Chibuke.The outreach was held at City of Glory College Alor-unor, Nsukka. We were welcomed by the amiable Principal in the person of Mrs. Omeje Pricillia Ngozi who gave us the platform to speak to her students.

It was an outreach on awareness on the rate of unemployment and the need to embrace entrepreneurship, which involved enlightening the students on the reality of the labour market. And how they can position themselves positively and make the best of the situation by venturing into the world of entrepreneurship and making the most of it earlier enough. They were taught employment, unemployment, entrepreneurship and the relationship between them.

However, the outreach did not only educate them about entrepreneurship but also enriched them on how to publicise and market their ideas/talents online and how their ideas can reach a larger audience through adverts on social media platforms. Thereby enlarging their market audience.

Medical and Health CDS May Outreach 2025

On May 20th, 2025, the Medical and Health CDS group conducted a community outreach at Faith Foundation Mission Hospital, Nsukka, as part of its Community Development Service initiative.

The outreach was targeted at mothers attending the hospital’s weekly Tuesday children’s immunization program. The focus of the sensitization was on exclusive breastfeeding.

During the session, the concept of exclusive breastfeeding was thoroughly explained, along with its numerous benefits for both mother and child. The necessary requirements for successful exclusive breastfeeding were outlined, including the nutritional needs of the mother to ensure adequate breast milk production.

Additionally, common challenges associated with exclusive breastfeeding were discussed, and practical solutions were provided to help mothers overcome them.

To conclude the program, free diapers were distributed to all participating mothers as a gesture of support and encouragement.

Medical CDS Group Outreach April 2025

In commemoration of World Malaria Day, observed globally on April 25th, the Medical and Health CDS group organized a community outreach at the Total Roundabout area. The aim of the campaign was to sensitize the public about malaria, its causes, signs and symptoms, modes of transmission, as well as effective methods of prevention and treatment.

During the outreach, members of the group engaged with residents, commuters, and local shop owners, emphasizing the importance of environmental hygiene in controlling mosquito breeding.

The exercise was well received by the community, with many expressing appreciation for the awareness and support provided. This campaign is part of our ongoing commitment to promoting public health and reducing the burden of malaria in our community.

Servicom CDS Group outreach April 2025

On the 30th of April 2025, SERVICOM CDS group had their CDS outreach led by the CDs president in person of Onwukamuche Blessing Tochi.The outreach was held at Barracks market, Nsukka.
It was an outreach to educate the traders on the need to render quality service and avoid being fraudulent in their activities, they were also enlightened on how fraud has caused damage to people and the world at large.

In addition, we encouraged them about the need to watch out for fraudulent people as well, as the influence of fraudulent people will destroy their integrity and make them loose their lives or properties, fraud can come in different ways, can be physically or online. We made emphasis on the recent crashed Ponzi scheme Cbex, as it has made away with people’s money with the lie of money doubling.

However, the outreach did not only educate them about the effects of fraud but how to avoid it and if it happens to them, the right authorities they can report to like the police station, EFCC and so on.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) CDS Group April Outreach 2025

The Sustainable Development Goals CDS Group led by the President of the group: Joshua Emmanuel Okon carried out an outreach on wednesday 30th of April 2025, at GRA along Nsukka stadium road, towards promoting sustainable development through climate action and environmental cleanliness. As young ambassadors of change, we recognize that a clean environment plays a vital role in mitigating climate change and ensuring public health.

Background and Objectives

In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), our group embarked on awareness campaigns, cleanup exercises, and advocacy to promote environmental sustainability in our host communities.

Objectives:
Our objectives were concentrated on the following;

1) Raising awareness on the link between environmental cleanliness and climate change.

2) Engaging the community members in proper waste disposal and recycling habits.

3)To promote responsible climate action among youths and local leaders.

Activities Carried Out

a.We facilitated an open discussion on what our host community think about the UN Sustainable Developments Goals and their understanding of climate change and environmental cleanliness

b.Environmental Sanitation Campaign:
We carried out a sanitation exercise in the surroundings as we sensitized those we met with This helped reduce refuse litter and educate the public on the dangers of improper waste disposals

c. Advocacy Visits:
We visited community leaders and stakeholders to seek support for sustainable waste management and climate resilience strategies.

Summarily, our group believes that climate action begins at the grassroots. The activities carried out by our CDS group demonstrate that with the right support and collaboration, our communities can take meaningful steps toward sustainable development. We humbly request the support of the Local Government in sustaining and scaling up these initiatives for a cleaner, healthier, and climate-resilient environment.

The FRSC CDS group had their outreach on 28th April 2025, led by the CDs president in person of Emmanuel T**a Ainoje and the FRSC Marshall Mr Eze .The outreach was held at peace park, Nsukka.
It was a outreach, which involved enlightenment on road and how to avoid car crash when driving and a flyers was distributed by the group to the motorist for guidelines, and they all gave us a maximum attention.

In addition, we encouraged them about how their lives is very valuable to them and there family. That over speeding on the road is not the best option.

However, the outreach did not only educate them about on only road safety but also enriched them on both on safety at home and anywhere they find them selves.

The DO DEEL CDS group had their outreach today, 25th April 2025, led by the CDs president in person of OCHONOGOR GODSPOWER CHIBUIKE.The outreach was held at Ogige market, Nsukka.
It was a digital outreach, which involved enlightenment on the digital market. And how the world is no longer analogue, but a digital world.
We met with some traders who gave us priority attention.

In addition, we encouraged them about the need for advertising their businesses online in order to reach out to larger audience. We spoke about Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp advert. How it brings noble and reputable customers, thereby making the business flourish both online and physically.

However, the outreach did not only educate them about digital marketing but also enriched them on online marketing and how their business can reach a larger audience through paid advert on social media platforms and consistently advertising online. Thereby enlarging their market space.

Culture and Tourism CDs April outreach 2025

On April 25th, 2025, the Culture and Tourism CDs group led by the Vice president Nwachukwu Ikechukwu Kelechi visited the Aku road market Nsukka LGA Enugu state as part of it's ongoing community development initiative.

The primary objective of this visit was to engage the market people and the public on the consequences and negative effects of Jungle justice.

During the outreach, the CDs group performed quickly a short and interesting unaware drama which captioned the theme Jungle justice, consequences and it's negative effects. This got the attention of the market people and the public .

After the drama, the group facilitated an open discussion on the consequences of jungle justice as seen in the drama.

The CDs group focused more on

1) Deep reflection of jungle justice through oral and dramatic explanation .
Jungle justice refers to the practice of mob violence, vigilantism, or extrajudicial killings, often targeting suspected criminals or individuals perceived as threats to community safety.

*Causes and Concerns:*

A. *Lack of trust in the justice system*: Many Nigerians feel that the formal justice system is slow, corrupt, or ineffective.
B. *Frustration with crime*: High crime rates and perceived insecurity contribute to public frustration.
C.*Vigilantism*: Some communities take the law into their own hands, leading to violent attacks on suspected criminals.

*Consequences:*

A. *Human rights abuses*: Jungle justice often involves human rights violations, including torture, maiming, and extrajudicial killings.
B. *Innocent lives lost*: Innocent individuals may be wrongly accused and subjected to violence.
C. *Undermining the rule of law*: Jungle justice undermines the formal justice system and the rule of law

2) Educate the proper method of seeking proper justice

3) Explaining the roles of the government agencies using the Nigerian Police force as a case study by the popular saying "THE POLICE IS YOUR FRIEND"

The group advice the public to always report any case of jungle justice to the police force for investigations and proper justice

ENVIRONMENTAL CDS APRIL OUTREACH

On 25th of April,2025 the environmental CDs group went for outreach at LGA Secretariat were we conducted thorough sanitation,to promote a healthy environment.

Achievement:
A coordinated cleanup effort was made,which involves:
* Collection, disposal of all visible litter.
* Sweeping, cleaning of road and gutters

Remarks:
* Implement a regular waste management schedule, including more frequent cleaning of gutters to avoid blockage.

GENERAL CDS OUTREACH TO HOPE ORPHANAGE HOME

On February 15, 2025, the National Youth Corp Members serving in Nsukka Local Government perform a General CDS Outreach to visit Hope Orphanage Home to celebrate Valentine's Day with the children. The visit aimed to show love, provide support, and inspire the children academically and career-wise.

The event featured various activities, including:

1. Gift and Monetary Donations: Corps members contributed various gifts, including clothing, food items, and educational materials. Additionally, a monetary donation was made to support the welfare of the children.

2. Educational and Career Discussions: An interactive session was held where Corps members engaged the children in discussions about education, career choices, and personal development. Inspirational stories were shared to encourage them to strive for excellence.

3. Entertainment and Bonding: The event also included fun activities such as music, games, and storytelling to create a joyful atmosphere and strengthen the bond between Corps members and the children.

The visit was impactful, leaving the children with not only material support but also encouragement and motivation for a brighter future. The General CDS Outreach remains committed to similar initiatives that contribute positively to society.

CULTURE & TOURISM JANUARY OUTREACH 2025

On January 24th, 2025, t Culture & Tourism CDS group, led by the president Akubue Ruth Faith, visited Urban girls secondary school in Nsukka as part of its ongoing community development initiative. The primary objective of this visit was to engage students in a meaningful discussion about the Negative effects of peer pressure among adolescent students, and ways to prevent them.

During this outreach, The group facilitated enlightening conversations and also Distributed Sanitary pads to the students.

The outreach focused on:
1. Explaining how they choose their circle wisely.
2. To learn how to say NO to some negative things.
3. To know their value and stand for it.
4. Don't be pressured or feel intimidated by peer groups.

Through these efforts, the group effectively conveyed the effects of peer pressure among adolescent students and successfully educated the students on how to prevent them.

At the end of the interactions staff and students of the school were happy for having such an impactful moment.
