OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE RELEASE OF ABDUCTED IGEDE CITIZENS

The Igede Youth Council (IYC) officially announces the release of our brothers and sisters who were abducted on February 9th, 2026, along the Utonkon-Okpoga road. We thank the Almighty for their safe return to their families.

On the Terms of Release:
We must state for the record that this freedom came at a significant cost. The families of the victims painstakingly contributed #500,000, which was augmented by a #500,000 contribution from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), totaling One Million Naira ( #1,000,000) paid to the captors. While we celebrate their life, we remain saddened that ordinary citizens must pay for the security that should be guaranteed by the state.

The IYC extends its deepest gratitude to the leadership and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). Your proactive leadership, financial support, and tireless coordination were instrumental in navigating this crisis. You have shown that when the system fails the common man, the spirit of "All For One, One For All" remains our strongest shield.

A Final Warning to Authorities:
While we celebrate this homecoming, the IYC remains on high alert. The Utonkon-Okpoga road cannot continue to be a "pay-to-pass" zone for kidnappers.

• We demand that the Benue State Government refund these families who have suffered both trauma and financial loss.
• We demand an immediate, visible military and police presence on that route to ensure no other family has to go through this nightmare.

We stand with the families during their period of recovery and psychological healing.
All For One, One For All.

CONDEMNATION OF THE KIDNAPPING AND MURDER OF IGEDE PEOPLE ALONG UTONKON-OKPOGA ROAD

We, the Igede Youth Council (IYC), condemn in strong terms the recent kidnapping and murder of our people along the Utonkon-Okpoga road.

On Monday, the 9th of February, 2026, 24 passengers from Oju Local Government Area, journeying to the western part of Nigeria, were attacked by armed men along the Utonkon-Okpoga road. Two of the passengers were shot dead, while others escaped. The remaining 15 persons are still being held by the kidnappers.

This incident is one too many, as our people have been subjected to repeated attacks, kidnappings, and murders along this route without any tangible security measures to curb these heinous crimes. The lack of security architecture on this road has made it a death trap for travelers, especially our people from Oju and Obi LGAs.

We call on the Benue State Government, security agencies, and relevant authorities to take immediate action to:

• Ensure the safe release of the 15 kidnapped persons.
• Beef up security along the Utonkon-Okpoga road to prevent future occurrences.
• Investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of this crime.

We demand that the government take responsibility for the safety of the lives and property of our people and all citizens using this road. We will not fold our arms and watch our people being murdered and kidnapped with impunity.

We expect a swift response and action from the authorities to address this pressing issue.

URGENT CALL FOR SECURITY INTERVENTION ON OJU-AWAJIR ROAD AND ULAM COMMUNITY

The Igede Youth Council (IYC) wishes to draw the urgent attention of the Benue State Government and all relevant security agencies to the persistent and worrisome cases of robbery and violent attacks against Igede people along the Oju–Awajir road, particularly within the Ulam community.

This development is deeply troubling, as the same community was recently the scene of a tragic incident where two vibrant Igede youths were brutally killed under unexplained circumstances. Just yesterday, another violent episode lasted for over three hours, leaving commuters and residents in fear for their lives.

The –Awajir road has regrettably become a war zone, with tensions between communities in Oju and Konshisha Local Government Areas escalating. In order to prevent further deterioration of the situation, we strongly call on the Benue State Government to:
Deploy adequate security personnel to secure the Oju–Awajir road and ULAM community.
Ensure the safe passage of Igede people and all commuters along this route.
Arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of these heinous acts.
Establish lasting peace and confidence among the communities to forestall further violence.

The youth Council emphasises that the protection of lives and property is the foremost responsibility of government. We therefore urge immediate action to restore peace, security, and free movement along this critical road.

We remain committed to peace and development, but we cannot stand idle while our people are subjected to repeated attack.

Let us stand united in peace and solidarity.

ATTENTION 🔔
URGENT ACTION IS REQUIRED‼️.

Good evening, fellow youths of Igede.
I trust your weekend is coming off greatly.

I have the mandate of the President of this noble council, Comr. Johnfrank Ozzidi to inform us that the Executive Committee of Igede Youth Council is taking a new dimension to how we are led. Worthy of mention is the introduction of a Robust National Register,
a database of all members of this association.

This register is to enable us to lead with informed data, tailored programs and support, and coherent activities within and outside the home. This also helps us monitor our members across branches.

We are therefore excited to deploy this form that would take only 1 minute of your time to complete. Kindly complete this form and send the link to as many members of this association as you know.

SEE THE FORM HERE: https://forms.gle/ZCv8gCY4CUkeBbvi7
