OKOBO LGA INVITES PREGNANT WOMEN, BREASTFEEDING MOTHERS TO FREE MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH OUTREACH AS WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK 2026 BEGINS

The Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, has called on all pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, parents, and caregivers across the Local Government Area to take advantage of the FREE Maternal and Child Health Outreach scheduled to commemorate the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival. WHO and UNICEF recommend that every baby should be put to the breast within the first hour after birth, be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life, and continue breastfeeding alongside safe complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond. Breastfeeding protects babies against common childhood illnesses, promotes healthy growth and brain development, and also reduces a mother's risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

In line with these global recommendations, the Okobo Local Government Council, in collaboration with the Carelife Character Foundation, the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health, the Akwa Ibom State Primary Health Care Development Agency (AKSPHCDA), and other implementing partners, will host a comprehensive FREE Maternal and Child Health Outreach as part of activities marking the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week.

The outreach is scheduled as follows:

Date: Friday, 7th August, 2026
Time: 8:00 a.m.
Venue: Primary Health Centre, Okopedi, Okobo Local Government Area

Theme: "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works."

Participants will benefit from a wide range of FREE healthcare services, including:

- Antenatal care

OKOBO COUNCIL CHAIRMAN PLEDGES SUPPORT AS NPC ROLLS OUT DIGITAL BIRTH, DEATH REGISTRATION

The Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to partnering with the National Population Commission (NPC) to ensure the successful implementation of the Nationwide Full Digital Birth and Death Registration under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) System.

The commitment was made when the leadership of the National Population Commission (NPC), Okobo Local Government Office, paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman at the Council Secretariat, Okopedi, on Monday, July 27, 2026.

Speaking during the visit, the Okobo Local Government Controller of the National Population Commission, Mr. Ndifreke Simeon Akpakadu, informed the Chairman that the nationwide digital registration initiative is designed to ensure that every birth and death in Nigeria is captured through a modern, efficient, and technology-driven Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System.

He explained that the E-CRVS platform will modernize birth and death documentation, improve citizens' access to registration services, and enable the issuance of birth and death certificates digitally, thereby reducing paperwork, delays, and unnecessary bureaucracy.

Mr. Akpakadu disclosed that Okobo Local Government currently has four registration centres located at General Hospital, Amamong; Okobo Housing Unit; Health Centre, Offi; and Health Centre, Utine. He appealed to the Council to support the Commission by creating public awareness to encourage residents to register births and deaths promptly.

Responding, the Executive Chairman, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, welcomed the delegation and commended the Federal Government and the National Population Commission for embracing digital innovation in civil registration.

He assured the Commission of the Council's full partnership and support in sensitizing residents across the Local Government on the importance of the initiative. The Chairman also canvassed for the establishment of an additional registration centre at the Okobo Local Government Council Secretariat to further enhance accessibility for residents.

The courtesy visit was attended by the Okobo Local Government Controller of the National Population Commission, Mr. Ndifreke Simeon Akpakadu, and the Registrar in Okobo, Mrs. Esther Sunday Ukim.

Also present from the Council were the Secretary to the Local Government, Pastor Etim Ibok; the Dean of Supervisors and Special Advisers, Hon. Ulap Eteka Ukpong; the Supervisor for Information; the Supervisor for Sports, Mr. Nse Oluhu; the Supervisor for Economic Development and SMEs, Mr. Victor Eneyo, alongside other council officials.
