The countdown to January 16, 2027 has begun in earnest.

The Presidential and National Assembly elections, including the election for the Federal House of Representatives, are scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

With just over 100 days remaining, voters should take the time to understand the electoral process, know their political party and candidates, confirm their voter information and polling-unit details, and rely on official INEC information as election day approaches.

For those who have already registered, INEC provides services for checking voter information, polling units and PVC-related information through its official voter portal.

Happy Birthday, Your Honour

Today, I celebrate Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Nkemakonam Udeze, Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, on the occasion of his birthday.

As a fellow APGA member and a colleague in public service, I acknowledge his contribution to the legislative development of our state and his leadership of the 8th Anambra State House of Assembly. The official Anambra State Government record identifies Rt. Hon. Udeze as the current Speaker.

Leadership comes with responsibility, and public service demands wisdom, courage and a genuine commitment to the people.

On this special occasion, I wish Your Honour good health, greater wisdom, strength and continued success in the service of Anambra State and our people.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEW MAYORS OF ONITSHA NORTH & ONITSHA SOUTH

I extend my warm congratulations to Hon. Emelie Albert Ibekwe, Mayor of Onitsha North, and Hon. Ikechukwu Peter Mofunanya, Mayor of Onitsha South, on their successful swearing- in and assumption of office.

As you begin this new chapter of service, I encourage you to always remember that leadership at the local level is about the people their welfare, their security, their livelihoods and the communities they call home.

Having served in local government, I understand the responsibility that comes with this office. The work is demanding, but it is also an opportunity to make a direct and lasting difference in the lives of our people.

I wish both of you wisdom, strength and the courage to serve with fairness, humility and dedication.

May your tenure bring meaningful progress to Onitsha North and Onitsha South, and may our two local governments continue to work together for the peace, prosperity and development of Onitsha.

VALEDICTORY SPEECH BY HON. TONY NWORA, MAYOR OF ONITSHA NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ON THE OCCASION OF HANDING OVER TO HON. ALBERT EMELIE

Your Royal Highness, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe,
The State Leadership of our great Party, APGA,
Distinguished Members of the Local Government Executive and Legislative Council,
Leaders of our Markets and Traditional Institutions,
Ndi Nze na Ozo, Umu Ada Onitsha, Youth Leaders,
Gentlemen of the Press,
Ndi Onitsha North, Ladies and Gentlemen.

I stand before you today with profound gratitude to God Almighty and to you, the good people of Onitsha North.

A few years ago, you gave me, Hon. Tony Nwora, a young man from this great city, the rare privilege to serve you as Mayor. Today, that chapter is coming to a close, and I return to say THANK YOU.

We came with a promise to restore order, pride and service to the commercial heart of Nigeria. With your support, we did our best:

We cleaned up our environment and restored sanity to our streets and markets. We rehabilitated roads and improved our internal revenue without burdening our traders. We restored peace between the Local Government and our market unions, our traditional institution and our youth. And we showed that governance can be accountable.

We may not have done everything, but history will record that we left Onitsha North better than we met it.

To my Vice, my Councillors, my HODs, my loyal staff, my political family - thank you. You carried this burden with me.

To Ndi Onitsha North you are my strength. You corrected me, you prayed for me, you supported me. I will forever be grateful.

As I leave this office today, I do not leave service. I am only answering a higher call to serve.

By the grace of God and with your continued support, I am offering myself as Candidate for the House of Representatives, Onitsha North and South Federal Constituency under our great Party, APGA, in the 2027 general election.

I seek to take the voice of Onitsha to the National Assembly to fight for better federal presence, for market infrastructure, for youth employment, and for the dignity of our people. What we started here in Onitsha North, we shall amplify in Abuja.

And I am at peace leaving this Local Government in safe hands.

My brother and successor, Hon. Albert Emelie, is a competent, grassroots leader and a true APGA stalwart. He knows Onitsha North inside out. I have no doubt he will consolidate and surpass our achievements.

I plead with all of you give him maximum support. Let us remain united in APGA.

I leave this office with no bitterness, no enemy, only gratitude.

Onitsha North will continue to shine!

My final day in office as Mayor of Onitsha North was marked by a gesture I deeply appreciate.

The leadership and staff of the Local Government came together to present me with a plaque and to express their appreciation for the time we shared in service.

Beyond the office, the projects and the responsibilities, what remains most meaningful to me is the opportunity to have worked with people who gave their time, energy and commitment to the service of our people.

I am grateful for the cooperation, the challenges we faced together, the lessons learned and the progress we were able to make.

Public office is temporary. Service, however, leaves a lasting imprint.

As I close this chapter as Mayor of Onitsha North, I leave with gratitude to everyone who contributed to the journey and to the people who gave me the privilege to serve.

OPI BRIDGE: PROJECT VISIT & PUBLIC NOTICE

Today, on my final day in office as Mayor of Onitsha North, I visited the Opi Bridge section along the 3-3 axis to inspect the area and provide a public update ahead of the planned reconstruction and renovation works.

The Opi Bridge section forms part of the wider 3-3, Nkisi Road dualization project, an ongoing infrastructure intervention aimed at improving connectivity, traffic flow and the overall road network around this important corridor. (Anambra State Government)

I wish to inform residents, motorists, business owners and other road users that the Opi Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic effective Saturday, 3 October 2026, to allow the reconstruction and renovation of the affected section to proceed safely and efficiently.

I understand the inconvenience that a temporary closure may cause. However, this intervention is necessary to address the condition of the affected section and support the broader improvement of the 3-3 corridor.

I therefore appeal to everyone who uses this route to plan accordingly, make use of alternative routes, and cooperate with the traffic and construction personnel throughout the period of the works.

As I conclude my tenure today, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of Onitsha North. I leave office with the belief that public service is ultimately about starting things that improve the lives of our people and ensuring that important work continues beyond one’s tenure.

My dear people of Onitsha North, fellow Ndi Anambra and Nigerians,

As Nigeria marks her 66th Independence Anniversary, I extend my warmest greetings and best wishes to you and your families.

As Mayor of Onitsha North Local Government Area, I join you in celebrating our great nation and in acknowledging the resilience, hard work and determination of our people.

Here in Onitsha North, our traders, artisans, transporters, business owners, workers, farmers, young people, women and families continue to work every day to keep our communities moving and contribute to the growth of our economy.

This Independence Day reminds us that nation-building begins in our homes, our streets, our markets and our communities. By promoting peace, supporting one another, keeping our environment clean, protecting our communities and doing our part as responsible citizens, we are contributing to a better Nigeria.

As we welcome the month of October, may it bring greater opportunities, good health, prosperity, peace and divine protection to every household in Onitsha North and beyond.

May our businesses flourish, may our young people find greater opportunities, may our families prosper, and may peace and security continue to prevail across our communities.

Together, let us continue to build an Onitsha North we can all be proud of, while contributing our quota to a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
