ADELEKE INAUGURATES COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO PRE AND POST-ELECTION VIOLENCE IN OSUN

“Panel Not Set Up to Persecute, But to Establish Truth and Prevent Recurrence” Osun Attorney General.

The Osun State Government has inaugurated a Commission of Inquiry to investigate alleged incidents of violence and other unlawful activities reported across the state ahead of the August 15, 2026 Governorship Election.

The Commission was inaugurated on Tuesday, September 2, 2026 at the Ministry of Justice Conference Hall, Abere by the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Oluwole Jimi-Bada, SAN, on behalf of Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke.

In his address, Jimi-Bada (SAN) said the Commission was constituted in response to reports, petitions and public concerns alleging acts of violence, intimidation, assault, destruction of property, unlawful possession or use of weapons, breach of public peace and other unlawful activities said to have occurred before and after the election.

“Elections are the foundation of democracy. Citizens must be able to participate freely and peacefully in the democratic process without fear, intimidation or violence. Where allegations of unlawful conduct arise, government has a duty to ensure that the facts are carefully examined and that justice is pursued in accordance with the law,” he stated.

The Attorney-General described the establishment of the Commission as “a clear demonstration of this administration’s commitment to justice, accountability, public order, peace and the rule of law.”

While stressing that the exercise was not a witch-hunts, Barrister
Jimi-Bada stressed that the Commission was not set up to persecute any person, political party, candidate, group, public officer or security agency.

“It is a lawful fact-finding body established to ascertain the truth, identify persons who may have been affected, determine responsibility where supported by credible evidence, and recommend measures to strengthen public peace and prevent any recurrence of unlawful conduct,” he said.

He added that the Commissions were also “not intended to shield anyone from accountability,” noting that where credible evidence discloses wrongdoing, the panel is expected to make firm, fair and lawful recommendations.

The Attorney-General charged the Commissions to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the alleged incidents, identify persons or groups involved where evidence permits, ascertain persons affected, examine any damage to property, and review the roles of political actors, security agencies and other stakeholders.

The panels are also expected to receive memoranda, petitions, oral and written evidence, documents, photographs, videos and other relevant materials from petitioners, witnesses, political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, journalists, traditional institutions and members of the public.

Jimi-Bada urged the members to conduct their proceedings with fairness, independence, transparency and respect for the principles of natural justice. He said every allegation must be carefully examined and findings must be based strictly on evidence, law and justice.

The Attorney-General called on all political parties, candidates, security agencies, public institutions, community leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, journalists and members of the public to cooperate fully with the Commissions.

He warned that the government will not tolerate intimidation of witnesses, suppression of evidence, harassment of petitioners or any attempt to interfere with the work of the Commissions.

To the political class, he said: “Political contest must never become a licence for intimidation, destruction of property, breach of public peace or any unlawful conduct. The peace and stability of Osun State are greater than the ambition of any individual or group.”

He also appealed to members of the press to ensure balanced and responsible reporting to promote truth, peace and confidence in the process.

Jimi-Bada said Governor Adeleke expects the two Commissions to submit their report within the time stipulated in the instrument establishing each of them. The report should contain clear findings of fact, persons affected, persons or groups found culpable where applicable, recommendations for prosecution or sanctions, recommendations for compensation or relief, and measures to strengthen peace and public confidence in the democratic process in Osun State.

He formally inaugurated the Commissions on behalf of the Governor and prayed for wisdom, courage, fairness and integrity for the Chairman and members.

The ultimate goal, he said, is “to help strengthen democracy, promote accountability, restore public confidence and ensure that political participation in Osun State continues to take place in an atmosphere of peace, fairness and respect for human dignity.”

The Commission of Enquiry into incidents of violence and unlawful activities reported across the state in the period leading to the August 15 election has Justice Abdurazaq Abdulkareem as Chairman while Barrister Biodun Badiora is the secretary. Others are Mr. R. Faremi, Mr. Maruff Adediran Esq, Comrade Waheed Lawal, AIG Aderanti Kayode (RTD), Dr. Adeyemi Aboderin, Dr Azeez Morufu Olakunle and Mr. Abodunrin Matthew Adeyinka.

The Coroner on Ikire Killings has Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola as Chairman, Barrister Biodun Badiora, Secretary, AIG Aderanti Kayode and Mr. Dele Akintayo are members.
Other members are Comrade Wale Balogun, Alhaji Akinkunmi Taliat Lanrewaju and Dr. Babatunde Afolabi, the CMD of UNIOSUN Reaching Hospital.

Dignitaries at the event included representatives of security agencies, members of the Nigerian Bar Association, civil society representatives and members of the press.

Governor Adeleke Issues Executive Order, Establishes Commission for Coroner Inquiry into Ikire Killings

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, has issued an Executive Order establishing a Coroner Inquest/Panel of Inquiry into the killings, shootings, injuries and violence reported at Naira and Kobo Junction, Motor Park/Garage Area, Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, on August 24, 2026.

The Executive Order, which took effect on August 31st, 2026, empowers the panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, determine the identities and number of victims, establish the immediate and remote causes of the violence, and examine whether criminal responsibility is connected to the deaths.

Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola has been appointed Chairman of the Coroner Inquest/Panel, with Mr. Abiodun Badiora as Secretary. Other members include AIG (Dr)) Aderanti C Kayode,mni (Rtd), Mr. Dele Akintayo, a representative of the Nigerian Bar Association, Comrade Wale Balogun representing Civil Society Organisations, a community representative from Ikire, and Dr Babatunde Afolabi as Medical/Forensic Representative.

The panel is mandated to determine the circumstances leading to the shootings and killings, examine the role of security operatives, establish whether live ammunition or other weapons were used and whether their use complied with the law, rules of engagement and human rights standards.

It is also empowered to identify any individual, group, security personnel, political actor, transport union member, public official or other person whose action or omission may have contributed to the incident.

The panel may recommend prosecution, disciplinary measures, compensation for victims and institutional reforms to prevent recurrence.

The inquiry will have powers to summon witnesses, demand relevant police and medical records, inspect the scene of the incident and other relevant locations, receive oral and documentary evidence, and recommend protective measures for witnesses and persons at risk of intimidation or retaliation.

Governor Adeleke also directed the preservation of fi****ms, ammunition records, station diaries, communication logs, incident reports, duty rosters, medical records, autopsy reports, photographs, videos and other materials relevant to the inquiry.

The Executive Order further calls for appropriate measures to protect witnesses and victims' families, obtain medical and forensic documentation, and maintain peace in Ikire pending the conclusion of the inquiry.

The Inspector-General of Police, Police Service Commission and Osun State Commissioner of Police are formally requested to take appropriate interim administrative steps concerning any police officer whose continued operational command may prejudice the inquiry or affect public confidence.

The panel is expected to commence sitting within seven days of its inauguration and submit its final report to the Osun State Government within 30 days from the date of its first sitting, subject to any necessary extension approved by the Governor.

The government has invited victims' families, eyewitnesses, journalists, transport workers, police officers, medical personnel, civil society organisations, political parties, community leaders, human rights activists and other concerned persons to submit memoranda and evidence to the panel.

The Governor assured the people of Ikire, families of the deceased, the injured and the general public that the incident would be investigated thoroughly, fairly and transparently.

The Executive Order states that no person found culpable shall be shielded from justice, irrespective of status, office, political connection or institutional affiliation, while stressing that all allegations remain allegations until established by credible evidence before the Coroner Inquest/Panel.

Governor Adeleke Dissolves, Reconstitutes UNIOSUN Governing Council

Governor Ademola Adeleke has dissolved the governing Council of the Osun State University in a bid to strengthen the institution's governance structures.

In a statement issued today at Osogbo, the governor also reconstituted the governing council to avoid gaps in the operation of the globally rated university.

The newly reconstituted council has Sooko (Prof) Adewale Abiodun Oladipo as the Pro-Chancellor and chairman of Council. He was the chairman of the dissolved governing board.

Other members of the governing council are as follows: Alhaji Gbadegesin Lawal; Her Excellency, Otunba T**i Laoye- Ponnle; Mr Akinola Franklin Omoniyi; Chief Funminiyi Awotide; Mr Orija Samuel Adebayo and Mrs Adewale Adetayo Bola.

The governor tasked the new council to sustain the excellent record of the University and support the university management for further innovative deliveries.

The inauguration of the new council will be held on Monday, August 31st, 2026.

Election Violence Relief Committee Holds Inaugural Meeting, Assures Victims of Government Support

The Election Violence Relief Committee, chaired by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Olumide Egbedun, on Thursday held his inaugural meeting with a call for victims of election-related violence to come forward and present their cases for consideration.

Speaking at the maiden meeting of the Committee, the Chairman welcomed members and expressed appreciation for accepting to serve at what he described as a critical moment in the history of the State.

Egbedun said the assignment of the Committee was both humanitarian and sensitive, stressing that its responsibility was to listen to victims, verify genuine claims and ensure that appropriate relief reached those who suffered losses as a result of election-related violence.

He assured the public that the Committee would discharge its responsibilities fairly, transparently and without prejudice, noting that every submission would be treated with utmost seriousness and decisions would be guided by facts, fairness and compassion.

According to him, a number of complaints had already been received and collated, the committee will welcome more.

Egbedun particularly appealed to persons still receiving treatment in hospitals as a result of injuries sustained during the election-related incidents to come forward, preferably through their relatives or representatives, and make their cases known to the Committee.

He assured that where such cases were brought before the Committee, it would liaise with the hospitals concerned to establish the condition of the victims and ensure that they received the necessary medical attention.

The Chairman further assured the victims, their families and the hospitals involved that the government remained committed to taking responsibility for the approved cost of their treatment.

The Committee Chairman also expressed profound appreciation to the Adeleke Dynasty for its compassionate intervention on behalf of children who lost their parents or benefactors during the recent election violence.

He disclosed that the Dynasty, through the Springtime Development Foundation, had communicated its decision to sponsor scholarships for the children of those who tragically lost their lives during the violence.

Egbedun described the initiative as a remarkable demonstration of humanity, compassion and commitment to the welfare of vulnerable families affected by the unfortunate incidents.

He noted that education remained one of the most enduring ways of honouring the memories of those who lost their lives, adding that investing in the future of their children would provide them with hope, dignity and an opportunity to build a brighter future despite their circumstances.

“As Chairman of the Election Violence Relief Committee, I commend this initiative and assure the Adeleke Dynasty and the Springtime Development Foundation of the Committee's appreciation and support in ensuring that the gesture reaches the intended beneficiaries transparently and effectively,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the Adeleke Dynasty and the Springtime Development Foundation for standing with affected families at a moment when they needed compassion and support the most.

GOVERNOR ADELEKE CONDOLES WITH IJABE COMMUNITY OVER PASSAGE OF ONIJABE, OBA FELIX OYELADE II

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has condoled with the people of Ijabe in Odo-Otin Local Government Area over the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Felix Olaniyan Oyeniyi Oyelade II, JP, the Onijabe of Ijabe Land.

Governor Adeleke described the late monarch as a respected traditional ruler and community leader who dedicated his reign to the peace, unity, and development of his people.

In a condolence message, the Governor stated, “The passing of the Onijabe of Ijabe Land is a great loss to the people of Ijabe and the traditional institution in Osun State. Kabiyesi was a father figure whose wisdom, and commitment to his people earned him lasting respect.”

He added, “His Royal Majesty leaves behind a legacy of service, peace, and dedication to community development. His contributions to the growth and stability of Ijabe will remain cherished by his people.”

Osun Government Constitutes Election Violence Victims Committee

Governor Ademola Adeleke has constituted a Committee on Election Violence Victims to verify claims of persons affected by election-related violence and oversee the disbursement of the ₦500 million Election Violence Victims Relief Endowment Fund provided by the State Government.

The committee, which is chaired by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Olumide Egbedun, is expected to undertake a transparent and credible verification process to establish genuine claims and ensure that relief reaches deserving victims.

The membership of the committee is as follows:

The Government therefore enjoined all affected persons with genuine claims to cooperate with the committee by providing accurate information and relevant evidence necessary for the verification process.

The committee is expected to ensure that the ₦500 million relief fund is administered transparently, fairly and strictly for the benefit of verified victims.

Osun State Government Warns Against Disruption of Public Peace

●Says All Actors Should Unite for State Reconciliation

The Osun State Government has warned against any disruption of public peace by any group or individuals, declaring that it is time for post-election reconciliation and peace-building.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, the state government noted with condolences to victims of the pre-election tensions and violence and called for state healing and avoidance of a return to conflict in the post - election space.

The government also noted the immediate post- election disruptions in some areas of the state and urged all residents and citizens of the state to allow restoration of peaceful co- existence and rule based interactions among all sectors of the society.

The government is particularly disturbed by reports of plans by some stakeholders to ignite fresh rounds of crisis across local government councils and motor parks across the state.

This plan, if true, should stop immediately in the interest of public peace. Osun needs peace for development, not violence in politics.

The Osun election has been won and lost. Mr President and Mr Governor had engaged on a peaceful way forward. Any push towards violence represents an affront on the Presidency and the Nigerian constitution.

The government calls on security agencies to enforce return to rule of law by ensuring release of political detainees and an end to perceived partisan policing especially on local government and motor park management.

We call on all political actors to speak and act peacefully. Osun should be in a period of healing and building. We must not allow a relapse into the pre-election era of killings and violence.

Governor Adeleke Honoured with Green Leadership Award at WIGSE-26

The Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, has been honoured with a Green Leadership Award in recognition of his administration’s commitment to climate action, renewable energy, environmental sustainability and the transition to a green economy in Osun State.

The award was presented to the Governor at the 1st International & 3rd National Women Green Summit & Exhibition 2026 (WIGSE-26), organised by the Women in Renewable Energy Association (WIRE-A) in Lagos.

Governor Adeleke was represented at the Summit by the Director-General and Special Envoy on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Professor Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, who received the award on his behalf and delivered the Governor’s goodwill message.

According to the organisers, the award recognises the Adeleke administration’s efforts in developing and implementing a comprehensive framework for climate and green economic development in Osun State. These include the Osun State Climate Action Plan, Renewable Energy Policy, Circular Economy Action Plan and Climate-Smart Investment Portfolio.

The organisers also recognised the administration’s practical interventions in solar energy, recycling, waste-to-wealth, ecosystem restoration and sustainable transportation, describing these efforts as evidence of a practical approach to linking environmental protection with energy access, innovation, livelihoods and economic development.

Among the initiatives highlighted were the operationalisation of a recycling hub, the IMOLE solar lantern initiative, which seeks to improve access to clean and reliable lighting for students, and the introduction of electric-motorbike initiatives as part of the State’s broader sustainable transportation agenda.

In her goodwill address on behalf of the Governor, Professor Obuaku-Igwe emphasised that Osun’s approach to climate action goes beyond environmental protection to encompass economic empowerment, job creation, innovation and inclusive development.

She stated that women and young people must be positioned at the centre of Africa’s green transition, noting that access to finance, technology, skills, markets and supportive public policy would be critical to enabling women-led green enterprises to thrive.

The Governor’s representative also welcomed the Summit’s focus on policy reform and capital mobilisation for women’s green future, noting that the objectives align with Osun State’s own efforts to create an enabling environment for green investment, renewable energy development, circular economy initiatives and sustainable livelihoods.

“Climate action must translate into opportunities for our people. It must create jobs, strengthen livelihoods, expand energy access, encourage innovation and build a more resilient economy,” Professor Obuaku-Igwe said while delivering the Governor’s goodwill message.

She further reaffirmed the Osun State Government’s readiness to deepen partnerships with investors, development institutions, private-sector organisations, researchers and other stakeholders to scale climate-smart initiatives and create opportunities for women and young people.

Professor Obuaku-Igwe commended WIRE-A for convening a platform that brings together women entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers and other stakeholders around the green economy, describing women as not merely beneficiaries but critical drivers of Africa’s green transition.

Receiving the award on behalf of the Governor, she expressed appreciation to WIRE-A for the recognition, noting that the honour would further strengthen the administration’s resolve to advance practical climate action in the State.

The Green Leadership Award, she said, would be regarded not simply as an honour, but as a renewed call to greater action, stronger partnerships and measurable impact.

The recognition further reinforces Osun State’s emerging profile in subnational climate leadership and its commitment to positioning environmental sustainability, renewable energy and the circular economy as important drivers of inclusive economic development.
