Election Violence Relief Committee Holds First Meeting, Urges Victims to Come Forward

The Election Violence Relief Committee, chaired by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Olumide Egbedun, held its inaugural meeting on Thursday and called on victims of election-related violence to submit their cases for consideration.

Egbedun welcomed members of the newly constituted committee and thanked them for accepting the assignment at what he described as a critical moment in the state’s history. He characterised the committee’s work as both humanitarian and sensitive, stressing that its mandate is to listen to victims, verify genuine claims and ensure that appropriate relief reaches those who suffered losses.
“The Committee will discharge its responsibilities fairly, transparently and without prejudice,” Egbedun said. “Every submission will be treated with utmost seriousness, and decisions will be guided by facts, fairness and compassion.”

He noted that a number of complaints have already been received and collated, adding that the committee remains open to further submissions. Egbedun specifically appealed to people still receiving treatment in hospitals for injuries sustained during election-related incidents to come forward, preferably through relatives or representatives.

The committee, he said, would liaise with the relevant hospitals to confirm the condition of victims and ensure they receive necessary medical attention. He also assured victims, their families and the hospitals involved that the government remains committed to covering the approved cost of treatment.

Egbedun expressed appreciation to the Adeleke Dynasty for its intervention on behalf of children who lost parents or benefactors during the recent violence. He disclosed that the Dynasty, through the Springtime Development Foundation, has decided to sponsor scholarships for the children of those who died.

He described the initiative as “a remarkable demonstration of humanity, compassion and commitment to the welfare of vulnerable families,” noting that education remains one of the most enduring ways to honour the memory of the deceased and give their children hope and dignity.

“As Chairman of the Election Violence Relief Committee, I commend this initiative and assure the Adeleke Dynasty and the Springtime Development Foundation of the Committee’s appreciation and support in ensuring that the gesture reaches the intended beneficiaries transparently and effectively,” he said.

Egbedun reiterated the committee’s determination that genuine victims will not be overlooked and that the relief process will remain credible, transparent and responsive. He wished members a successful start to their assignment and prayed for continued peace and wellbeing in Osun State.

Osun @35: Adeleke Pledges Inclusive, Fair ,People-Centred Administration

As Osun State marks its 35th anniversary, Governor Ademola Adeleke has pledged to sustain an inclusive, fair and people-centred administration while consolidating the achievements recorded by his government.

Adeleke made the commitment in a state broadcast marking the anniversary, assuring residents that his administration would continue to prioritise infrastructure development, the digital economy, sports, agricultural mechanisation, education and healthcare.

He said youths, women and students would remain key beneficiaries of government programmes, while efforts would be intensified to promote industrialisation without compromising workers' welfare. He also promised greater attention to rural integrated development, ease of doing business, wealth creation and anti-poverty initiatives.

The governor further pledged to implement his renewed five-point agenda in line with due process, procurement regulations and best practices in project ex*****on. He said the government would refine its local content policy and deepen financial inclusion through cooperative sector financing.

Adeleke also acknowledged the pains and sacrifices experienced by residents, particularly during the recently concluded governorship election, which resulted in his securing another four-year mandate. He commiserated with families who lost loved ones and assured them that the sacrifices of those killed or injured would not be in vain.

He commended Osun residents for their commitment to democracy and the rule of law, particularly their decision to heed his call not to resort to violence despite provocations and attacks. The governor also praised voters for turning out in large numbers to exercise their franchise and for standing by their votes amid the reported tension and violence, just as he urged residents to remain law-abiding and refrain from reprisal attacks.

He disclosed that his administration had established a Commission of Inquiry into the election violence, which would receive memoranda from victims and affected residents, identify the causes of the violence and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence. The governor also announced the establishment of an election victim compensation fund headed by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, to cushion the effects of the recent violence.

He however appealed for continued cooperation from the people, promising to work harder to deliver good governance and not disappoint them.

It would be recalled that Osun State was created on August 27, 1991 under the administration of the then military president, Ibrahim Babangida together with other 8 states, bringing Nigeria's number of states from 21 to 30.

Osun Government Constitutes Election Violence Victims Committee

Governor Ademola Adeleke has constituted a Committee on Election Violence Victims to verify claims of persons affected by election-related violence and oversee the disbursement of the ₦500 million Election Violence Victims Relief Endowment Fund provided by the State Government.

The committee, which is chaired by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Olumide Egbedun, is expected to undertake a transparent and credible verification process to establish genuine claims and ensure that relief reaches deserving victims.

The membership of the committee is as follows:

The committee is mandated to receive and verify petitions, claims and supporting evidence submitted by victims; determine the eligibility of claimants; and recommend appropriate relief to verified victims in accordance with the guidelines approved by the State Government.

The State Government said the initiative underscores Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke's commitment to supporting citizens who suffered losses, injuries, displacement or other forms of hardship as a result of election-related violence.

The Government therefore enjoined all affected persons with genuine claims to cooperate with the committee by providing accurate information and relevant evidence necessary for the verification process.

The committee is expected to ensure that the ₦500 million relief fund is administered transparently, fairly and strictly for the benefit of verified victims.

Osun State Government Warns Against Disruption of Public Peace

●Says All Actors Should Unite for State Reconciliation

The Osun State Government has warned against any disruption of public peace by any group or individuals, declaring that it is time for post-election reconciliation and peace-building.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, the state government noted with condolences to victims of the pre-election tensions and violence and called for state healing and avoidance of a return to conflict in the post - election space.

The government also noted the immediate post- election disruptions in some areas of the state and urged all residents and citizens of the state to allow restoration of peaceful co- existence and rule based interactions among all sectors of the society.

The government is particularly disturbed by reports of plans by some stakeholders to ignite fresh rounds of crisis across local government councils and motor parks across the state.

This plan, if true, should stop immediately in the interest of public peace. Osun needs peace for development, not violence in politics.

The Osun election has been won and lost. Mr President and Mr Governor had engaged on a peaceful way forward. Any push towards violence represents an affront on the Presidency and the Nigerian constitution.

The government calls on security agencies to enforce return to rule of law by ensuring release of political detainees and an end to perceived partisan policing especially on local government and motor park management.

We call on all political actors to speak and act peacefully. Osun should be in a period of healing and building. We must not allow a relapse into the pre-election era of killings and violence.

Adeleke, Deputy Receive Certificates of Return After Osun Re-election

Following the successful conclusion of the 2026 Osun State governorship election held on Saturday, August 15, Governor Ademola Adeleke has received his Certificate of Return after securing re-election for another four-year term.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presented the certificates to Adeleke and his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, at a ceremony held at the Commission’s state headquarters in Osogbo.

Speaking after receiving the certificate, Adeleke expressed appreciation to INEC, security agencies and the people of Osun State for their support and participation in the election. He acknowledged the challenges recorded during the electoral process, including threats and killings.

The governor said his administration belongs to all residents of the state irrespective of political affiliation. He also declared that he had forgiven those who offended him, urging his political opponents to put the election behind them and work together for the development of Osun.

Adeleke further promised to support the families of people who lost their lives during the electoral process, particularly through educational scholarships that would enable their children to attend tertiary institutions.

He also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to continue to uphold democratic principles and create an environment where democracy can thrive in Nigeria.

Earlier, the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, said elections remained the legitimate means through which citizens choose their leaders. She commended security agencies, INEC officials, journalists, voters and other stakeholders for their contributions to the successful conduct of the election.

Babalola acknowledged the challenges encountered during the electoral process, assuring that the Commission would examine them and seek better ways of addressing such issues in future elections. She urged Adeleke to reciprocate the mandate given to him by the electorate through good governance, while calling on Osun residents to support the incoming administration.

Osun Advances Urban Mobility as Governor Adeleke Commissions 10-Span Okefia Flyover in Osogbo

Governor Ademola Adeleke has commissioned the newly completed 10-span Okefia Flyover in Osogbo, describing the project as a major milestone in the transformation of urban transportation, public safety and economic activity in the Osun State capital.

The governor said the flyover offers a permanent solution to the long-standing traffic congestion that has for years plagued one of the busiest intersections in the Osogbo metropolis. Okefia Junction, he noted, serves as a strategic gateway linking Osogbo with Ilesa, Iwo, Ikirun and other parts of the state. Traders, students, workers and motorists had previously endured prolonged delays, frequent accidents and disruptions to commercial activities before the intervention of his administration.

Governor Adeleke, who spoke with visible satisfaction at the ceremony, stated that the project forms part of his administration’s five-point infrastructure development agenda and ranks among the most significant infrastructure investments executed in Osun in recent years.

He listed other completed projects within the Osogbo metropolis, including the Old Garage–Okefia–Lameco Dual Carriageway, the Lameco Flyover, the Osogbo–Ikirun Dual Carriageway and sections of the Oba Adesoji Aderemi East Bypass, in addition to more than 30 kilometres of intra-city roads across the state capital.

The governor expressed appreciation to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun, Larooye II, the Osogbo Traditional Council and residents of the state capital for their support and patience during construction. He then formally declared the 10-span Okefia Flyover open for public use.

Speaking on behalf of the Ataoja, the Asiwaju of Osogboland, Justice Kunle Ajeigbe (Rtd), expressed satisfaction with the completion of the project. He described it as a transformative development that would strengthen economic growth, improve connectivity and enhance the quality of life in Osogbo and beyond.

Oke-Fia remains a critical gateway connecting major markets, hospitals, schools and residential communities, he noted, and he commended the governor for combining infrastructure delivery with efforts to beautify Osogboland and preserve its cultural heritage.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, Hon. Akinwumi Odejobi, described the commissioning as a transition from vision to tangible results. He recalled that Okefia Roundabout had long been one of the most congested and accident-prone intersections in the Osogbo metropolis.

Presenting the project brief, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Bashir Bello, represented by Engr. Lekan Salami, Director of Research, Planning and Statistics, explained that the flyover was designed to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow along the State Secretariat–Abere corridor towards Government House and the Ilobu Road axis while reducing conflict points and improving safety.

The bridge was constructed under strict supervision in accordance with approved civil engineering standards and specifications. It has successfully passed all structural integrity tests and has been certified safe for use by all categories of vehicles without restriction.

Osun State commissions 6.2km dual carriageway in Ilesa to ease congestion and boost connectivity

The Osun State Government has commissioned a 6.2-kilometre dual carriageway linking Ereja Square through Imo and the Brewery area to the Ilesa/Akure Expressway, describing the project as a major boost to mobility, commerce and urban development in Ijesaland.

Governor Ademola Adeleke formally declared the road open during a ceremony in Ilesa. He said the corridor ranks among the busiest in Osun East Senatorial District, connecting major markets, schools, hospitals and neighbouring communities while providing direct access to the Ilesa/Akure Expressway. The route also carries cultural weight, beginning at the palace of the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland.

Adeleke praised the engineers, contractors and officials of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure for delivering a quality project that addresses long-standing problems of traffic congestion, flooding and poor road conditions in the heart of Ilesa.

He noted that the dualisation forms part of the administration’s broader Osun Infrastructure Agenda, which is being rolled out across Osogbo, Ede, Iwo, Ila-Orangun and Ilesa to ensure balanced development statewide.

In addition to the dual carriageway, the governor said his administration has completed more than 10 kilometres of intra-city roads within Ilesa to improve urban mobility and residents’ quality of life. He thanked the Owa Obokun, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup (Ajimoko III), the Ijesa Traditional Council and the people of Ijesaland for their support and patience during construction.

Oba Haastrup described the project as a significant milestone in the ongoing transformation of Ilesa and the wider Ijesaland. He said residents have already seen notable improvements in road infrastructure during the governor’s first term and expressed confidence that more projects would follow.

The monarch used the occasion to request the dualisation of the Osu–Osogbo corridor and upgrades to the road linking the Technical School to the Polytechnic axis, while reaffirming the traditional institution’s support for development regardless of political affiliation.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Regional Integration, Hon. Akinwumi Odejobi, welcomed guests and said the dualisation of the Owa Palace (Ereja Square)–Imo–Ilesa/Akure Expressway was designed to ease persistent congestion along the busy Brewery Road corridor and improve traffic flow onto the expressway.

He described the completed project as evidence of the administration’s commitment to closing infrastructure gaps and laying a foundation for economic growth.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Bashir Bello, represented by Director of Highways Engr. Moruf Ojebode, provided technical details. He said the 6.2km dual carriageway was executed in two phases—4km and 2.2km—and features 1.5-metre concrete walkways on both sides, a 1.2-metre median fitted with solar-powered streetlights, and reinforced concrete drainage channels measuring at least 1,000mm by 1,000mm.

The project, the first dual carriageway of its kind in the heart of Ilesa metropolis, followed Nigerian Highway Standards and modern engineering specifications, with soil investigations, traffic surveys and hydraulic studies conducted beforehand.

Engr. Bashir added that the ministry has completed at least ten other intra-city roads in Ilesa, including Ademoroti Street, Ogbon Titun–Anaye Road, Alhaji Olasupo/Bonke Road, Ita Ofa–Oromu–Araromi Road, Atakumosa Market Road–Obiteni–Omofe Road, Imose–Justice Onibokun Street, Oke Ese–Adenle Junction–Oke Yin–Bepo–Akata–Ayeso Road, Ajimoko–INEC Road and INEC Road–Osogbo/Ilesa Road. Work on Adeti–Idasa Road is still ongoing.

OSUN COMMISSIONS AKODA–BHS–OKE GADA DUAL CARRIAGEWAY AS ADELEKE REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO INFRASTRUCTURE RENEWAL

The Osun State Government has commissioned the 8.83-kilometre Akoda–Baptist High School–Oke Gada Dual Carriageway in Ede, hailing the project as a major milestone in the administration’s statewide infrastructure renewal programme.

The ceremony attracted government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, engineers, contractors and residents of Ede. The dual carriageway is expected to ease mobility, enhance road safety and boost economic activities in the town and neighbouring communities.

Governor Ademola Adeleke described the road as “a promise fulfilled and governance that touches the lives of the people.” He noted that the corridor links key residential areas, schools, markets and major routes connecting Ede to Osogbo and Ibadan, making it a vital transport artery for the town.

The governor said the dual carriageway would cut travel time, improve traffic safety, support commercial activities along the Akoda, Cottage and Oke Gada axis, and strengthen security through the installation of solar-powered streetlights. He emphasised that the project forms part of his administration’s broader commitment to delivering modern infrastructure across all zones of Osun State.

Governor Adeleke commended the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the contractors for meeting approved engineering standards. He also thanked the Timi of Ede, the Ede Traditional Council and residents for their patience and cooperation during construction before formally opening the road to the public.

The Timi of Ede, Oba Dr Munirudeen Adesola Lawal (Laminisa I), praised Governor Adeleke for the ongoing transformation of infrastructure across the state. The monarch urged residents to remain peaceful, law-abiding and committed to protecting public infrastructure for future generations.

Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Special Duties and Regional Integration, Dr Bashir Salami, the Special Adviser on Special Duties, Hon. Akinwumi Odejobi, said the project was designed to address traffic congestion, flooding and recurrent accidents along the corridor. He explained that the completed road now features modern drainage systems, solar street lighting, pedestrian walkways, bus bays and upgraded junctions to improve traffic flow and public safety.

Director of Highways, Engr. Morufu Ojebode, speaking on behalf of Engr. Bashir Bello, said the project was executed in two phases to tackle persistent congestion and flooding in the Ede metropolis. Phase One covers 5.4 kilometres from Akoda to Baptist High School, while Phase Two covers 3.6 kilometres from Baptist High School to Oke Gada. Both phases were awarded in November 2023 and completed by December 2024.

Engr. Ojebode stated that the dual carriageway comprises 9.3-metre carriageways on both sides, 1.5-metre pedestrian walkways and a 1.2-metre central median fitted with solar-powered streetlights. The design followed detailed geotechnical, traffic and hydraulic studies and conforms to both federal and Osun State highway standards to ensure durability and safety.

He appealed to residents to protect the infrastructure by avoiding refuse dumping in drainage channels and trading on pedestrian walkways, noting that proper maintenance would extend the road’s lifespan for decades. He confirmed that the Akoda–BHS–Oke Gada Dual Carriageway is 100 per cent complete, meets all engineering specifications and is fully ready for public use, describing it as further evidence of the Adeleke administration’s commitment to equitable infrastructure development across Osun State.
