BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) TRAINING FOR NURSES

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency response capacity and improve patient outcomes, the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB) successfully organized a Basic Life Support (BLS) Training on 2nd June, 2026, at the RSPHCMB Conference Hall.

The training brought together nurses from various Local Government Areas across Rivers State for a comprehensive learning experience focused on lifesaving emergency care skills.

Participants received both theoretical and practical training on key BLS concepts, including the early recognition of medical emergencies, high-quality Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use, and the management of choking incidents.

A major component of the training was the hands-on practical session, where participants practiced essential lifesaving techniques using mannequins and AED trainers under the guidance of the facilitators. The interactive session provided an opportunity for participants to refine their skills, build confidence, and improve their preparedness to respond effectively during emergencies.

The training concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, allowing participants to discuss real-life experiences, clarify concerns, and gain practical insights applicable to their daily practice.

The programme further strengthened the capacity of nurses across the State, equipping them with critical skills needed to provide timely and effective emergency care while contributing to improved patient safety and improved health outcomes.

The meeting focused on enhancing the readiness of health facilities and frontline healthcare workers through improved surveillance, prompt case identification, infection prevention and control (IPC) measures and rapid response coordination.

Key action points highlighted during the meeting included:

A 2-DAY TRAINING ON NUTRITION COMMODITIES

The Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB) successfully organized a 2-Day Training on Nutrition Commodities aimed at strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers on essential nutrition interventions necessary for improving maternal, infant, and child health outcomes across Rivers State.

The training focused on key nutrition commodities and interventions including Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS), Vitamin A Supplementation, and the prevention, identification, and management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).

During the sessions, facilitators educated participants on the importance of MMS in improving maternal and child health. Participants learned that MMS contains essential vitamins and minerals such as iron, folic acid, zinc, iodine, and vitamins A, C, D, and E, which support fetal development, strengthen immunity, reduce anemia, improve pregnancy outcomes, and promote healthy growth and brain development in children.

The training also highlighted Vitamin A supplementation as a critical public health intervention for children under five years and other vulnerable groups. Facilitators emphasized its role in supporting healthy vision, boosting immunity, reducing the severity of infections, and preventing child morbidity and mortality.

A significant aspect of the training centered on Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), with healthcare workers receiving practical guidance on early detection using Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tapes, identification of danger signs, and appropriate treatment approaches. Participants were also trained on the management of uncomplicated SAM using Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) such as Plumpy’Nut, alongside routine medications and nutritional support.

Sessions further covered the management of complicated SAM cases requiring hospital-based care, including stabilization procedures, infection management, therapeutic feeding, and rehabilitation in line with World Health Organization treatment guidelines.

The training concluded with practical demonstrations and interactive sessions focused on early diagnosis, proper nutritional counseling, community sensitization, and strengthening access to nutrition commodities as part of ongoing efforts to combat malnutrition and improve public health outcomes across Rivers State.
