A 2-DAY TRAINING ON NUTRITION COMMODITIES
The Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB) successfully organized a 2-Day Training on Nutrition Commodities aimed at strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers on essential nutrition interventions necessary for improving maternal, infant, and child health outcomes across Rivers State.
The training focused on key nutrition commodities and interventions including Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS), Vitamin A Supplementation, and the prevention, identification, and management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).
During the sessions, facilitators educated participants on the importance of MMS in improving maternal and child health. Participants learned that MMS contains essential vitamins and minerals such as iron, folic acid, zinc, iodine, and vitamins A, C, D, and E, which support fetal development, strengthen immunity, reduce anemia, improve pregnancy outcomes, and promote healthy growth and brain development in children.
The training also highlighted Vitamin A supplementation as a critical public health intervention for children under five years and other vulnerable groups. Facilitators emphasized its role in supporting healthy vision, boosting immunity, reducing the severity of infections, and preventing child morbidity and mortality.
A significant aspect of the training centered on Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), with healthcare workers receiving practical guidance on early detection using Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tapes, identification of danger signs, and appropriate treatment approaches. Participants were also trained on the management of uncomplicated SAM using Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) such as Plumpy’Nut, alongside routine medications and nutritional support.
Sessions further covered the management of complicated SAM cases requiring hospital-based care, including stabilization procedures, infection management, therapeutic feeding, and rehabilitation in line with World Health Organization treatment guidelines.
The training concluded with practical demonstrations and interactive sessions focused on early diagnosis, proper nutritional counseling, community sensitization, and strengthening access to nutrition commodities as part of ongoing efforts to combat malnutrition and improve public health outcomes across Rivers State.
