Digital transformation is not optional—it drives impact at scale.

From 15–17 July 2026, the Abia NEWMAP–EIB SPIU participated in the FPMU–UNOPS WDAMS Roll-Out Training, working alongside colleagues across states to strengthen workflow management, documentation, and institutional knowledge systems.

Through hands-on sessions and peer exchange, we built capacity to standardize processes, improve compliance, and enable real-time information sharing.

This goes beyond a system upgrade—it marks a deliberate shift toward greater efficiency, transparency, and accountability in project delivery.

We will continue to leverage digital solutions to strengthen implementation and deliver measurable, sustainable outcomes for the communities we serve.

This is how we drive efficiency.
This is how we deepen transparency.
This is how we deliver results that matter.

Environmental Update: Amamba, Dodds Methodist & Atta Emede Ibeku

Following a distress call from the Amaewu Amamba Community in Uzuakoli, Bende LGA on 3 July 2026, the Abia State Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with Abia NEWMAP–EIB, undertook an immediate joint technical assessment on 6 July 2026.

The findings confirm a rapidly deteriorating situation at the Amamba erosion site. Subsequent assessments at Dodds Methodist (Uzuakoli) and Atta Emede Ibeku (Umuahia North LGA) indicate similarly severe conditions. Both Amamba and Atta Emede are now classified within a high-to-critical risk category.

Gully expansion is advancing aggressively toward homes and critical access roads. In several locations, roads have already been severed, and properties are facing imminent structural failure. With each rainfall event, the scale and speed of degradation intensify.

This situation demands urgent, coordinated intervention—not only to safeguard lives and property, but also to prevent significantly higher economic, environmental, and social costs in the near future.

Preliminary analysis points to a convergence of factors, including:

* Inadequate and poorly managed drainage systems
* Absence of effective stormwater control infrastructure
* Unregulated and climate-insensitive development patterns
* Increasing intensity of seasonal rainfall linked to climate variability

Abia NEWMAP–EIB remains fully committed to protecting vulnerable communities, strengthening infrastructure resilience, and advancing sustainable environmental management across the State.

Coordinated technical response efforts are already underway. Further updates will be provided as actions progress.

A Full Day of Climate Action: Abia NEWMAP–EIB Marks World Environment Day 2026

For Abia NEWMAP–EIB, June 5th, 2026, was far more than a ceremonial commemoration—it was a day of concurrent action, visible impact, and a clear statement of intent. The team deployed simultaneously across multiple fronts to ensure the message of sustainability was seen, heard, and felt state-wide.

🕢 7:30 AM — National Spotlight | NTA “Good Morning Nigeria”
The day opened on a national stage as the Project Coordinator, Dr. Nkiruka Chidia Maduekwe, featured live on NTA’s flagship programme, Good Morning Nigeria. The core message was clear and urgent: nature-based solutions are not optional—they are essential. Abia State’s climate adaptation efforts were brought to the forefront, reinforcing a shared national responsibility for action.

🕗 8:00 AM — On the Streets | Road Walk for Climate Action
Concurrently, the Abia NEWMAP–EIB Team partnered with the Abia State Ministry of Environment and the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Abia State Chapter, for a high-energy road walk.
Declared open by the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, and led by Permanent Secretary Mr. Ikechukwu Oriuwa, the walk translated policy into physical presence. It was a visible, collective stand by citizens and stakeholders for a cleaner, greener Abia.

🕚 11:00 AM — On the Airwaves | Deepening the Conversation
While the road walk engaged the streets, momentum continued across the airwaves with two simultaneous broadcasts:
* BCA “Good Governance”: The Project Coordinator, alongside the Project Engineer, Environmental Safeguards Specialist, and Natural Resource Management Specialist, unpacked the mechanics of climate action. They brought the technical work of erosion control and watershed management into clear, practical focus for the public.
* Family Love FM “Orientation Hour”: At the same time, the Project Social Livelihood Specialist delivered a compelling call for responsible and sustainable practices, reinforcing a simple truth: protecting our environment is a shared, everyday responsibility.

🕛 Afternoon — At the Grassroots | Agbama Town Hall
While media engagements ran parallel, climate action moved directly to the people at the Agbama Community Town Hall.
Here, conversation became commitment. Practical solutions—tree preservation, clean energy, climate-smart agriculture, and waste-to-wealth initiatives—were not just discussed, but actively embraced. Community voices were heard, concerns were acknowledged, and clear pathways for follow-up were established.
Then came a defining moment: A united, public pledge by the community to protect, rather than cut, trees. The session closed with the planting of Teak — a living symbol of community resilience and a greener future.

🕛 12:00 PM — In the Lecture Hall | MOUAU Keynote
Amidst these ongoing state-wide activities, the day reached another high point at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU). The Project Coordinator delivered an impactful keynote address on Urbanisation and Climate Action — expertly connecting policy, science, and practice to map out a strategy for sustainable urban growth.

From national media to community halls. From the streets to academia. ABIA NEWMAP–EIB showed up—fully, strategically, and impactfully.

Climate action is not a moment. It is a movement. And the time is now!

Happy World Environment Day 2026

Today, we pause — not just to reflect, but to feel the reality around us.

In Abia State, climate change is not abstract.
It is the gully that edges closer to a home after every rainfall.
It is the farmer watching fertile land disappear.
It is the family forced to move because floodwaters will not recede.
It is the quiet anxiety of communities wondering, “what happens next?”

This is not just an environmental issue.
It is about lives, livelihoods, and our shared future.

At Abia NEWMAP-EIB SPIU, this is why we act.

We are working to reduce erosion and flood risks, protect our watersheds, and build communities that can withstand the shocks of a changing climate — communities that are not left behind, but carried forward.

But we cannot do this alone.

This World Environment Day, we ask you to see what is at stake — and to act:
Plant a tree.
Reduce waste.
Conserve water.
Protect our drainage systems.
Speak up for the environment.

Because every small action is a line of defence.

Every choice is a vote for the future we want.

Our Climate. Our Future. Our Responsibility.

Let us act — now.

ABIA NEWMAP-EIB AT THE NATIONAL PLASTIC SUMMIT 2026

Today, ABIA NEWMAP-EIB participated virtually in the National Plastic Summit 2026, themed “Innovation, Inclusion and Investment for a Prosperous Circular Plastic Economy in Africa.”

Beyond the national statistics of over 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste generated annually, a critical issue highlighted — and one we experience directly in Abia State — is the use of erosion sites, drainage channels, and waterways as dumping grounds for plastic waste.

This practice significantly worsens erosion by:
Blocking natural water flow
Increasing surface runoff pressure
Accelerating gully expansion and infrastructure damage

The Summit reinforced that the challenge is not plastic itself, but how we manage it across its lifecycle.

For ABIA NEWMAP-EIB, the outcomes are directly applicable to our work. Strengthening recycling systems, promoting waste-to-wealth initiatives, and driving behavioural change at community level are essential to protecting erosion control investments and ensuring long-term watershed stability.

As we mark World Environment Day 2026, we reaffirm our commitment to integrating sustainable waste management into erosion control and climate resilience efforts.

Cleaner environments are not optional — they are foundational to preventing erosion and building resilient communities.

Together, we can change the narrative.
