ABIA NEWMAP-EIB AT THE NATIONAL PLASTIC SUMMIT 2026

Today, ABIA NEWMAP-EIB participated virtually in the National Plastic Summit 2026, themed “Innovation, Inclusion and Investment for a Prosperous Circular Plastic Economy in Africa.”

Beyond the national statistics of over 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste generated annually, a critical issue highlighted — and one we experience directly in Abia State — is the use of erosion sites, drainage channels, and waterways as dumping grounds for plastic waste.

This practice significantly worsens erosion by:
Blocking natural water flow
Increasing surface runoff pressure
Accelerating gully expansion and infrastructure damage

The Summit reinforced that the challenge is not plastic itself, but how we manage it across its lifecycle.

For ABIA NEWMAP-EIB, the outcomes are directly applicable to our work. Strengthening recycling systems, promoting waste-to-wealth initiatives, and driving behavioural change at community level are essential to protecting erosion control investments and ensuring long-term watershed stability.

As we mark World Environment Day 2026, we reaffirm our commitment to integrating sustainable waste management into erosion control and climate resilience efforts.

Cleaner environments are not optional — they are foundational to preventing erosion and building resilient communities.

Celebrating 3 Years of Impactful Governance in Abia State!

Today, the Abia NEWMAP–EIB State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) participated in the Grand Finale—Special Anniversary Parade marking the third year in office of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, Executive Governor of Abia State.

Held at the Umuahia Township Stadium, the colourful parade brought together government officials, MDAs, security agencies, development partners, and key stakeholders in a shared celebration of purposeful leadership, community transformation, and measurable progress across the State.

The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the administration’s milestones over the past three years—underscoring a collective commitment to sustained development and improved service delivery for the people of Abia State.

ABIA NEWMAP–EIB SPIU joined dignitaries, senior government officials, academics, development experts, and stakeholders at the Abia State Anniversary Lecture held on 28 May 2026 at the International Conference Centre, themed “Three Years of Transformation: Impacting Lives, Shaping the Future.”

The high-level engagement, anchored on the lecture “Governance as Dignity: 3 Years of Impact and Shaping the Future of Abia State,” provided a strategic platform for reflecting on the State’s governance reforms, development milestones, and long-term vision for sustainable and inclusive growth.

Opening remarks by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, underscored the importance of accountability, visionary leadership, and citizen-centred governance. The keynote address by Professor Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, alongside contributions from distinguished discussants, further reinforced the role of institutional strengthening, innovation, and policy coherence in driving sustainable development outcomes.

Under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, Abia State continues to advance a reform-driven agenda anchored on transparency, infrastructure delivery, and measurable impact. The announcement of the commissioning of nine completed roads further signals sustained progress in public infrastructure and service delivery.

Held at the Event Centre, Okpara Square, Umuahia, the service was a reflective celebration of the administration's progressive journey, punctuated by prayers of gratitude for the immense structural and institutional milestones recorded over the past three years.

Day 3: Strategic Engagements & Project Site Inspections at the NEWMAP–EIB Workshop 🇳🇬*

Momentum continues to build in Asaba, Delta State, as high-level stakeholder engagements and field-based learning took center stage on Day 3 of the NEWMAP–EIB Project Implementation Readiness Workshop.

The day’s activities focused heavily on alignment, policy ex*****on, and peer learning:

🏛️ Strengthening Intergovernmental Collaboration
National Project Coordinator, Engr. Anda Ayuba Yalaks, alongside UNOPS Project Manager Donato Serena, the 23 States Project Coordinators, and FPMU specialists, paid a courtesy visit to the Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Honourable Commissioner Ejiro Jamani. This high-level meeting reinforced a shared regional commitment to advancing climate adaptation, erosion control, and sustainable watershed management.

🏗️ On-the-Ground Project Site Inspections
Moving from the boardroom to the field, the delegation proceeded to key project sites for physical inspections. These visits provided critical, firsthand insights into site-specific realities, helping to perfectly align project planning with practical ex*****on and environmental safeguards.
