DID YOU KNOW? — EVERY SOLDIER BELONGS TO A CORPS

When a person joins the Nigerian Army, they don't simply become a soldier without a professional identity. Personnel are assigned to different Corps, branches, or specialist areas within the Army.

So, what is a Corps?

A Corps is a professional branch of the Army made up of personnel with specialised roles, skills, and responsibilities that contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.

Some examples include:

🔹 Nigerian Army Infantry Corps
🔹 Nigerian Army Armoured Corps
🔹 Nigerian Army Artillery Corps
🔹 Nigerian Army Corps of Engineers
🔹 Nigerian Army Corps of Signals
🔹 Nigerian Army Medical Corps
🔹 Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps
🔹 Nigerian Army Finance Corps
🔹 Nigerian Army Military Police

Each Corps has its own professional responsibilities, training requirements and role in supporting the Army's mission. For example, the Nigerian Army Medical Corps provides medical services to personnel, while the Corps of Signals is associated with military communications.

STATEHOUSE PRESS RELEASE

President Tinubu approves salary increases for armed forces personnel

President Bola Tinubu has approved salary increases of between 30 and 80 per cent for Nigeria’s armed forces personnel.

About 250,000 personnel are to benefit from the new deal.

Under the new arrangement, which becomes effective from September 1, officers above the rank of colonel will enjoy a 30 per cent salary increase. This applies to Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals.

Personnel from colonel down to warrant officer will have a 50 per cent increase, while Private to Staff Sergeant will have an 80 per cent increase.

The pay package will increase the yearly salary bill for the country's armed forces personnel from N660 billion to N924 billion.

President Tinubu has always praised the courage and sacrifices of members of the armed forces as they confront the scourge of banditry, kidnapping and terrorism in some parts of the country.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation.

“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties.

“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians

“ I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation”.

It is intriguing to note that certain individuals attempt to scam government security agencies.

This year alone, the Nigerian Legion Unit 101 has received numerous attempts by scammers presenting fictitious contracts accompanied by demands.

However, most of these scammers are unaware that it is only through intelligence that we can sharpen our skills.

We possess counter-intelligence capabilities, and it is unfortunate that social media propaganda has led many to believe that Nigerian security agencies lack the training or capacity to protect their own organizations, let alone the country as a whole.

We advise against wasting time attempting to scam us, as Nigerian security agencies can only minimize crime, not eradicate it.

The enemies of Nigeria will continue to create bandits and terrorists to undermine our selfless service and pursue their own selfish political, religious, and tribal interests.

Contrary to the negative portrayal on social media, Nigeria is making progress, our economy & security are improving.

‎When a soldier falls in battle, Nigeria loses a hero. But the greatest burden is often carried by the wife who becomes a widow overnight and the children who must grow up without a father or mother.
‎These brave men and women did not die chasing wealth or comfort. They died protecting our communities from terrorists and bandits, standing between danger and millions of innocent Nigerians.

‎The medals, gun salutes, and burial ceremonies are honorable—but they are not enough.
‎
‎If a soldier makes the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation, the Federal Government should ensure that the family they leave behind is cared for for life. Their spouses should not have to struggle to feed their children, and their children should never have to abandon their dreams because the parent who died defending Nigeria is no longer there to provide.

‎Supporting the families of our fallen heroes is not charity—it is a national obligation. It sends a powerful message to every soldier on the front lines that if they make the ultimate sacrifice, their loved ones will never be forgotten.
‎A grateful nation does not stop honoring its heroes at the cemetery. It continues honoring them by protecting the families they left behind.

‎Our fallen heroes gave Nigeria everything. The least Nigeria can do is give their families a lifetime of dignity and security.

The Nigerian Legion is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament in 1964, amended by the Nigerian Legion Interim Management Decree 25 of 1977, and further amended by Nigerian Legion Decree No. 37 of 1988, as published in the Federal Republic of Nigeria Official Gazette No. 64 Vol. 75, dated 30th September, 1988. As an offshoot of the armed forces, comprising the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the Nigerian Legion was established to cater to the welfare of ex-service men who fought in wars that Nigeria has participated in, and to promote the spirit of comradeship among living ex-service and serving personnel in the military. The Decree that established the Nigerian Legion (Decree No. 37 of 1988) empowers it to establish an affair of the corps of commissionaire or any other organization to serve as an auxiliary arm of the Nigerian Legion. Consequently, the Nigerian Legion is a Federal Government security agency under the Veterans Affairs Division (VAD) of the Ministry of Defense, Abuja.

A Nation That Depends on Its Soldiers Must Also Stand by Them."
The call has grown louder.
Military veterans have met with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, demanding the immediate implementation of the ₦250,000 minimum salary they say was approved for serving soldiers. They argue that those defending Nigeria against terrorism, banditry, and other security threats deserve better welfare and that further delays could undermine morale among serving personnel. �

Every soldier leaves home not knowing if they will return. Their families also bear the burden of that sacrifice. Many Nigerians believe that improving soldiers' welfare is an investment in national security.
