𝗜 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵

I gave him my best years.
I gave him my body, my heart, my loyalty, my soul.
I gave him a home, a family, a love that never wavered.

I stayed through the hardest times, through the storms that should have broken us. I chose him every single day; even on the days he didn't choose me.

But in the end, I was never enough.

He still looked for love in places I never existed.
He still found warmth in arms that weren’t mine.
He still whispered words to another woman; the same words he once whispered to me.

And the worst part?
I saw it. I felt it. I knew it.
I just didn’t want to believe it.

I held on.
I begged, I cried, I fought.
I wanted to fix what was already shattered,
But how do you fix something when you’re the only one trying?

I lost myself trying to save someone who didn’t even want to be saved.
I lost my voice screaming for love that was already given to someone else.
I lost my worth convincing him that I was enough...when in his heart, I never was.

And now, I sit here, with tears falling down my face, wondering:
Was it my fault?
Was I too much?
Was I too little?
Did I love too hard?
Did I expect too much?
Did I hold on too long?

I don’t know the answers.
And maybe I never will.

But what I do know is this:
I may not have been enough for him,
But I will be enough for myself.

One day, the tears will dry.
One day, the pain will fade.
One day, I will wake up and not wonder if she makes him happier than I ever did.
One day, I will look in the mirror and see the woman he took for granted,
And I will love her again.

BLOOD CYCLE
Episode 5

The Chief Inspector showed up to check out how Akin was living out the case. He's been away to attend to other serious cases.

His large head nodded to each of his men as he hobbled through the passage created by the standing officers. His great hairy hands were buried deep in his grand trouser which could well accommodate two men. On seeing him, Akin sprang to his feet and paid him a salute!

He regarded me and asked Akin with raised eyebrows:
“How is it that he isn't taking a break?!”
Akin’s eyes shifted to me boyishly.

“Well, it's only right that I follow up on my only daughter's murder case.” I croaked. He exhaled heavily and made to say something offensive but was interrupted by Akin.

“Let’s just let him be Sir. It won't be long before the case is wrapped up.” He politely said. The Chief inspector gave him a hard look before asking what was the latest development on the case.

“Well Sir, I just couldn't rush things without your presence. I'll have it as you love.”

A wicked grin began to peel off the Chief inspector’s lips. He was still grinning when Akin said the culprit was already known. The Chief Inspector nodded, still grinning hard.

“Hurry up. I don't have much patience with news like this!” The chief inspector pressed.

“Well, ladies and gentlemen...” Akin moved up to the group of school Teachers who had been rooted to a spot.

“The murderer is you Mr Patrick!” he suddenly shot a finger at Linda's form master. The fella was taken unawares. His heart must've skipped a beat!

“How...how...what do you mean?!” he stuttered. Akin kept drawing close to him until he took a few steps back. He didn't stop looking straight into his eyes.
“Surprised how I got you?!” he grimaced.

Even I, was confused. That man didn't look like it at all. He was her form Teacher! I gazed at him in disbelief.

“Come on boy, let's entertain them a little!” Said the Chief inspector as he kicked a chair around and then parked his hefty body on it. He crossed his great leg of the other.

Akin came around and faced him.
“I already knew it's him the moment he testified. I was just giving him the long rope to cast himself out! I didn't just go through the time book but the time table. I have also interacted with the subject teachers individually and have gotten the much hints I needed. On the day he murdered his student, he took a sick permission but guess where he'd first headed to? The librarian's office. The librarian through his little window could see anyone going to the workshop. That's the only way to see anyone going in there. Now, the librarian also teachers Geography. My friend Patrick went straight to him knowing it was his time for Geography in the senior class time table. He even reminded the librarian that it was time for his class. He only had to make sure that the librarian left the library before making a way for not just himself but Linda too. Poor Linda was definitely under his cold threats and blackmail. He had artfully instilled great terror in her. From my findings, their infamous meetings happened every Wednesday at the same hour and place, for 3 times in two months. At least from my findings, Linda always left her class just a few minutes after he had taken his false permissions. The school security also hinted the time when Patrick usually left the school gate on these Wednesdays. On that very last day, Linda thought she could finally resist him but his guilt and fear of being exposed triggered him to silence her for good.

Moreover, Patrick claimed he doesn't often put on the leather shoes even when they've almost become his second feet. Even if he wears anything else on his feet, he still could be easily found out because he gives more weight to his left foot. All his shoes and sandals have been affected so – just like the one he's having on now. The funny thing is that he's the only guy I this big school who's got more weight on his left foot. His shoe size is 45 as are the prints in the workshop. The school security only keep to their leather boots...”

“How and when did you find all these out” was what escaped from Patrick's mouth as he sweated profusely.

BLOOD CYCLE
Episode 4

Officer Mira held out a bottle of chilled Soda. I caught hold of the drink with doubts. My throat had gone dry as nothing had passed through it since morning. The female officer had thought it wise to get me something to get by with. That was the much she could do as I refused going home. Hunger and thirst were now after my own life!

I couldn't even go to the school canteen myself. The social media guys were dotted everywhere!

Inspector Akin already sent for Johnson after going through the e letter he had dropped.
“You won't make it today but the very first human I want to see here tomorrow has to be him!” he told his men off.

After giving a few directions, he came out to me for what could be called a recess. A sly grin appeared on his face as he caught me planting my lips into the soda bottle.

“A cold drink for the throat eh? Lucky you.” He patted my shoulder and then parked himself beside me on the long bench. He rubbed his palms together and blew out a hot air.

I didn't say a word to him.

“This Johnson of a guy is all we need to hit the case home. And our Linda would finally get to rest in peace.” He said, taking a few glimpses of me as he hoped my face could produce a grin.

“He’d better given me a good reason for taking my only child's life.” I snapped.

“Yeah I wish to hear him sing too. It's been days I had a sleep. All thanks to the suspect. I can't wait to end this case. My wife's doctorate convocation ceremony is next week.”

“Lucky you.” I blurted out.

“You think so?” he scoffed and looked away. We kept chatting until his short break elapsed. He peered at his wristwatch before standing to his feet.

“It’s time for the last session before wrapping it up for the day.” He hushed and nodded to me.

He proceeded to call for the School Security guards...

Early the following day before I arrived at the School, Johnson was already at hand. The Police who escorted me refused letting me get any close to him.

“So, how was the love trip?” Akin questioned the suspect.

“I didn't go on any love trip. I was only on a sick leave officer.” he retorted with rounded eyes.

“That's at least what you told the school management in your letter. We the Police only go by what are see. An advice for you Johnson my friend: avoid the triangular kind of relationship. It's such a pain that Felicia is wedding her fiance next month!” Akin revealed.

“You say?!” Johnson's eyes went red. He glared at the inspector as if he had said the impossible. He couldn't believe that Akin knew as much as even his lady's secret wedding to another man. He had been with her all weekend and had heaped all his salary on her. They had even discussed marriage stuffs. Felicia had even promised birthing six fine children for him.

Johnson's teeth gritted noisily as he folded his palms.

“So, what about Linda?” Akin suddenly asked. Another shocker!

“Who is Linda and what have I got with her?” he flared up. He hadn't still recovered from the shock of Felicia's escapades.

“Easy. I'm doing the questioning.” Akin raised a hand.

“Well I don't know any Linda!” he said moving away his face angrily.

“At about 013 hours of Wednesday the 15th, a JSS2 female student of this college named James Linda went missing. Four days later, we found her dead and buried behind the old workshop... So, my friend what has it not to do with you?”

“Jesus Christ... I have no idea officer!” said a shocked Johnson.

“But you lied to the school management with a sick leave only to run off with your double-crossing woman, Felicia after doing such a horrible thing to Linda. How could you be so wicked man?”

“Officer... I swear to God. It's not me. I admit that I fooled the school authority with a false letter and I apologise for all that but believe me sir, I wouldn't have anything to do with poor innocent student!” Johnson cried out.

“Let’s see where playing hard to get leads you... Go on and take a break! I'll call for you soon.” Akin dismissed him.

“Even if you point a gun to my head, I won't admit commiting a crime I know nothing about!” Johnson said as an officer led him away.

BLOOD CYCLE
Episode 3

There was nothing much the School could do. The moment the news of my daughter's murder left the fore-walls, it went wide, like a wild fire!

Many facts had been woven out of the case: it was crystal clear what the motive of Linda's murder was.

Her murderer shoe size was 44. One of these leather sh*ts whose soles would never peter out. He had given the right sole more of his weight.

The whole incidence happened after the break period. At least that was when Linda was last seen.

Meanwhile, in the apartment off the school, the young fraudster who had the video clip was in the middle of an argument with his host. His host had advised him to turn himself in, with the video as the news of the school murder was already going viral.

“Bro, that's a Trump card you have out there! This strong evidence is capable of cleansing you of your crimes and you'll have your free life to live!” he said, running his fingers through his spiky hairs.

“It doesn't work that way Daniel. It doesn't. Having a high on demand evidence isn't enough to get one of the hook of the EFCC. The Police may settle the scores with you but what now happens to the EFCC.”

“Suit yourself bro. I'm tired of trying to drum senses into your head!” Daniel yelled.

“Now you're the sense-man? Socrates I greet you!” the fraudster retorted.

“See bro, no forget say na my house you dey o. If loose-guard I go cast your update!!” Daniel exploded.

The fraudster raised his two hands and quickly apologized. He knew better not to aggress his host...

Back to the School, it was already the second day of the murder case. The Director was already smelling out the bars. At a point in his chat with the Chief inspector, he had lost his cool and acted funny. The Police had been working themselves to ensure that mob action had no chance for success!

Social media influencers, activists, and the food-is-ready class of journalist had flocked the whole place making the work very difficult for the officers of the law. Police swam in like bees.

Akin at his own end had become a very busy man. The Police and some well meaning personalities had suggested that I went home to cook off at least. Cool off? Cooling off when my Linda was freezing in the Morgue? That had got to be the cruelest joke of the century! I was determined to stay and witness the wicked perpetrator being unveiled.

“May I have the time book, or has the school buried it too?” Akin requested.

“Oh, sure Sir!” the vice principal cackled and got her legs busy at once. Soon she reappeared with a big book.

“Does it comprise all the names of every staff working here?” he asked while snatching the book from her.

“No Sir. The school security and other members of the non-academic staff have their separate time boo...”

“Go fetch them. Hurry!” He snapped as he laid the fat book on a Table and began flipping the pages.

“Patrick Eze?!” he suddenly called out from the book.

“That would be me Sir!” Linda's form master marshalled out of the group of teachers who had all been summoned. Patrick stepped forward to answer the inspector whose eyes hadn't shifted from him.

“You didn't sign out on Linda's burial day? Explain.” Akin probed him.

“My bad Sir. I forgot to after taking a sick permission.” he replied.

“What's your infection?”

Other teachers giggled to themselves.

“Not infection Sir. I had acute malaria and typhoid Sir.” Patrick countered.

“When was the last time you treated it?”

“Pardon?”

“I asked, when was the last time you treated malaria and typhoid?!” Akin repeated.

“That very day Sir!”

“Any medical report?”

“No Sir!”

“Leather shoes are bad for malaria ND typhoid patients. Do you wear them often?”

“No Sir!”

“You love them?”

“Yes Sir!”

“Do you own one?”

“Yes Sir!”

“So, you self medicate?”

“Sometimes sir.”

“Do you all self medicate too?” he turned and asked the rest of the teachers. Some echoed ‘Yes’ while others cackled ‘No’

“That would be drug abuse!” the Health Science Teacher blurted out.

Just then, the vice principal Mrs Ukwu by name arrived with the other time books. Akin took them and began to have a look while ignoring Patrick.

“Where has Johnson being for the past seven days?” Akin probed.

“He took a sick leave on Wednesday last week.” Mrs Ukwu answered.

“Wednesday? The same day Linda disappeared?”

“Yes Sir.”

“How long is this leave going to last?”

“Two weeks Sir”

“Can I have his leave letter?”

“I’ll see to it Sir!”

“Thank you.” He closed the book and breathed heavily.

30/07/2024

My missing daughter was found dead some 100 yards away from the School old Workshop! I couldn't bring myself to believe that my only child was murdered in cold blood.

This was the worse thing I ever dreaded to happen! My face turned a stream of tears. I thought maybe the world was coming to an end.

For the Police, this had gone from a missing child case to murder case. Akin was putting a call across to the Station while his boys ran around to mark the vicinity for seal.

From close examination, Akin confirmed it was actually Linda's Shoe prints that were littered in the workshop. He realized it was high time he made use of his diary.

“This is a big one!” he hushed to one of his men as he hiked up to the Workshop. He had paused briefly and looked at me. A hard exhalation decided him.

“That Workshop holds a whole lot of this jam! Hey, hurry up and have the entire place sealed!” I heard him say, over my shoulder. Two officers stepped forward and took me by the arms. I tried breaking free but they weren't pap boys.

Soon, an Ambulance wailed in. More Policemen swam in too! An ununiformed man wearing the afro style after speaking to Akin came over to me and we spoke briefly. He said he was Chief Inspector Maurice.

The workshop had been thoroughly re-examined. More Shoe prints of the man were discovered. There were no more of Linda's.

“Hey Egghead, what do you make out of this?” The chief Inspector probed Akin in a low voice while pecking his curved-pointed nose.

“Smells like R**e and murder to me. A little resistance from poor Linda must have triggered her killer to turn violent.” Akin said.

“Sir?!” a Junior officer intoned, carrying a broken spade. Maurice turned his huge body around to face the man.

“What’s with the shovel, You love it?” Maurice joked.

“Take a look Sir” the officer proceeded you show him a blade of grass on the Spade's blade.

“This makes it more established a fact that she was truly murdered by a sex-maniac.” Maurice said to Akin. His great hands went over his waist.

“You should go have more conversation with your girlfriend's father, James. His stories would go a long way in unpuzzling this jam. He's all yours. I'll go have a chat with the School management while the boys get busy with the underground works.” Maurice directed Akin.

Akin asked if I had noticed anything strange about Linda before her disappearance. It was only then the guilt had caught up with me. Poor Linda had of course acted strangely!

A week to the ugly incidence, she had refused going to School. It took a manly effort to get her talking, not that she really revealed anything reasonable. She just kept requesting a change of School. I had promised seeing to that as soon as the term was over. However, I didn't understand how a good school like Heritage could've suddenly bored her. I only promised changing her school with the hope that she was going to get over whatever issues she had. She cried a lot in her room. She didn't eat much. Always kept to herself. I thought she was going to get over all of it! I burst into tears as I failed pulling myself together.

Akin scrawled a few lines into his pocket diary. He proceeded to interrogate her close friends who also stated that she used to keep to herself and wouldn't even share with them whatever it was that troubled her.

Her Form Master, Mr Patrick stated that she'd been acting weird too. She was no doubt, one of his brightest students. She was very respectful and humble.
“She was down to Earth!” he said.

“You noticed she was weird, yet didn't bother to talk to her as the Form Teacher?!” Akin probed.

“I... Was about doing that just before her disappearance. I haven't been too healthy myself to pay close attention to one out of many.” He has replied.

“When was the last time you saw her in the classroom?” Akin pressed.

“On same day she disappeared after taking the roll call.”

Akin closer his diary and nodded to him.

Away from the School, none of us could've known about the young fraudster who was on the run. He had found solace in his distant relative's apartment, located about 800 meters away from the workshop.

The workshop was however away from the school's attention. Worse still, it hid the little piece of land where Linda had been buried.

If only the runaway fraudster could be reached, he had the video of the infamous burial. He was checking out his new Samsung Galaxy when the idea of zooming the camera into the depths possessed him. Upon zooming the Camera, his eyes had almost dropped out of their sockets. He thought it wise to video what was going on at what seemed to be a School premises. Hit the LIKE button!

My 11 year old daughter went missing from School. It'd been three days and no one could trace even her footprints.

I never knew Heritage College to be this careless. How could a child who was entrusted to them have disappeared without a trace? They had better found my only child in 96 hours or face the music. I'd been trying to wear my best behavior from the very first day Linda went missing.

The so-called school Management had pleaded with me to not get the Police involved. So, it was okay to protect the school while Linda was missing?

For days, no food had paid mouth a visit. Every minute of the days that went by, I was occupied with the hope that she was going to be found. Life without her was useless! She was all that I had. She was all that kept me going after the severe tortures I'd had from life over the years. Her mother left us for a rich man when shes was just five. For six solid years, I'd been playing both the father and mother figure. My hustle had to be quadrupled just so I could give her a better life. So she could never regret having just me in her innocent life.

When wealth and luxury finally came my way, I decided that she was going to get the best in life, starting from food to Education and here was I, entangled in this web of misery.

The Sun rose on the fourth day without my knowledge. I had sat up all night, lost in my hurtful thoughts. Just as the early birds kept reminding me it was a new day, I heaved a sigh then moved my hand across the bed and took my phone.

“Hello, is this the Police?” I croaked over the phone. A metallic voice barked in response. I prayed my plight to him...

“Please, put yourself together and get over to the Station. Do you mind?” the voice said.

A whistled out a hot air before telling him I was coming over.

“Good.” the voice said then hung up.

I just couldn't take a any longer. In less than 1,800 seconds, the Police and I stormed the School. One inspector Akin was on the case. He had already assigned to two of men to go dig up all information about my enstranged wife. That included her current address and movements.

Akin had every conviction that she had a hand in this owing to get exclusive report I'd fed him with.

The School Director, Dr Benz looked at me with total disappointment when the Police swam in with me.

“Don’t blame me. It's been three days past!” I looked away from him. The School activities were already disrupted. Akin already cornered the Director for questioning.

Linda's close friends and classmates were all interrogated in turns. Even the School Security weren't left out. Her class form master too!

From the reports everyone gave, Akin was moved to intensify the search within the school premises. If this didn't yield any helpful result, then it was high time the Public got a notice!

After about an hour's combing, Akin was called over to the old workshop by one of his men. I ran after them. The junior officer led us to an open space in the workshop. It wasn't floored. Just an ordinary Earth.

However, there were shoeprints suggesting that a child and an adult had been to the place. The child's prints were that of a young girl where as the bigger shoe prints belonged to a man.

From a close approach, Inspector Akin hinted that the man probably had more weight in his left leg as the print was deeper at one end of his shoe sole. He knelt on one of his knees with one of his hands over the raised knee.

“What is Linda’s shoe size?” Akin lifted his great face.

“34!” I answered almost in slumber.

“Such a big girl” he scoffed as he further observed the smaller shoe prints. Just then, one of his men returned to report that there were no other shoe prints around the workshop.

“Of course, there should be none since it has rained lately. We're only able to find these ones because the ground here has a roof over it. It's only damp!” Akin heightened and gave him the officer a friendly pat on the shoulder.

“However, judging the direction of the prints, they must've headed outside. I have a hunch that these prints belong to your daughter, Mr James.” He turned to me.

“Sir!” another junior officer ran in, “Come take a look at this!!”

“Mr James, I suggest you stop following us around for the moment at least. You did to take a break already” he patted my shoulder as he went out with his men. I stood motionless, not sure if I could listen to him or not.

As they were taking a lot of time, I carefully followed the direction they had taken. I saw with my own eyes, a body in uniform being unearthed.

“Linda! Lindaaaaa!!!” I ran toward them.
