As we concluded our startegic engagement courtesy visit to the Governor of Bayelsa State & project tour, I had the opportunity to share my reflections on the remarkable projects and institutions we visited. The experience highlighted the state’s commitment to infrastructure, innovation, human capital development, and effective governance.

Bayelsa is charting a bold path towards sustainable growth, and the South-South Development Commission looks forward to partnering with the State Government to expand opportunities, strengthen regional development, and improve the lives of our people.

Strengthening Governance Through Modern Infrastructure

Our regional development tour of Bayelsa State concluded with an inspection of the ongoing New State Secretariat, following our visit to the Glory Drive Road and Bridge project.

The New State Secretariat is more than an administrative complex—it is an investment in effective governance, institutional coordination, and improved public service delivery. Modern administrative infrastructure provides the environment for better policy formulation, efficient government operations, and faster service to citizens, all of which are essential for sustainable development.

Combined with strategic infrastructure such as the Glory Drive Road and Bridge, these projects demonstrate Bayelsa State’s commitment to building the institutional and physical foundations needed for long-term economic growth.

The South-South Development Commission looks forward to deepening collaboration with the Bayelsa State Government as we pursue innovative partnerships that will unlock new frontiers of development, strengthen institutions, and improve the quality of life across the South-South region.

Visit to the Bayelsa State ICT Village

As part of the South-South Development Commission’s regional engagement in Bayelsa State, the delegation visited the Bayelsa State ICT Village, a flagship digital innovation ecosystem established to drive technology, entrepreneurship, and human capital development.

During the tour, the delegation inspected state-of-the-art facilities, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) laboratories, Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres, robotics laboratories, drone technology training facilities, solar technology fabrication and renewable energy workshops, cybercrime and cybersecurity training centres, innovation hubs, and digital skills development centres. The ICT Village is designed to equip young people with future-ready skills while supporting startups, research, innovation, and technology-driven enterprises.

The Commission commended the visionary leadership of the Bayelsa State Government, under Governor Douye Diri, for investing in digital infrastructure that prepares the state’s youth for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Special recognition was also extended to NITDA for its strategic partnership and commitment to strengthening the facility through capacity building, digital innovation, cybersecurity awareness, and technical support.

The South-South Development Commission looks forward to fostering strategic collaborations with the Bayelsa State Government and NITDA to expand digital inclusion, advance Artificial Intelligence, strengthen cybersecurity and cybercrime prevention initiatives, promote innovation and technology-driven entrepreneurship, and create sustainable employment opportunities for young people across the South-South region.

Day 2: Exploring the Future at the Bayelsa ICT Village!

As part of our regional tour of Bayelsa State, we visited the impressive Bayelsa ICT Village—where innovation meets opportunity.

From Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, drone technology, cybercrime and cybersecurity training, Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres, to solar technology fabrication and digital skills development, the facility is empowering young people with the tools to thrive in the digital economy.

We commend the Bayelsa State Government, under the leadership of Governor Douye Diri, and NITDA for their visionary investment in technology, innovation, and human capital development.

The South-South Development Commission looks forward to building strategic partnerships that will expand digital inclusion, strengthen innovation, create jobs, and equip more youths across the South-South with future-ready skills.

The future is digital, and the South-South must lead it.

Day 2: SSDC/Bayesla State Government

As part of the South-South Development Commission’s regional tour in Bayelsa State, we visited Bayelsa Medical University and its Teaching Hospital, an emerging centre of excellence in medical education, research, and healthcare delivery.

The facility boasts modern healthcare infrastructure, including CT scan and dialysis units, blood banks, a fully equipped Accident and Emergency Centre, ambulance services, CPR and rapid response facilities, as well as an emergency control and monitoring system supporting healthcare response across both urban and rural communities.

We commend the Bayelsa State Government and the leadership of the University for their commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery. Investments such as these are vital to improving access to quality medical care, saving lives, and building healthier communities.

The South-South Development Commission looks forward to fostering strategic collaborations that will further improve access to quality healthcare services, strengthen emergency medical response systems, and advance medical education and research across the South-South.
