*AKSG Ministry of Health Clarifies Viral Video on Ikot Ekpene General Hospital, Reaffirms Commitment to Quality Healthcare*
The Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Hospitals Management Board, has debunked allegations of negligence contained in a viral video recorded at the Accident and Emergency Unit of General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene.
Addressing journalists today in a Press briefing that held in the conference room of the ministry of health, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Patrick Eshiet, described the claims as contained in a video circulated on Saturday, September 27, 2025, by one Ms. Idongesit Edet that alleged that the hospital staff of General Hospital Ikot Ekpene failed to attend to her mother as misleading and unfounded.
Findings from a thorough investigation led by the Director of Medical Services, Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Boniface Effiong, however, revealed that the patient was promptly attended to at 7:45 a.m., diagnosed with a chronic condition, and placed on medication with regular reviews throughout the day. Records also showed that the patient was never in immediate clinical danger.
The investigation further revealed that Ms. Edet forcefully entered a consulting room without authorization and went on to record a video against the wishes of the doctor on duty, thereby breaching ethical and professional standards as well as the patient’s privacy.
Also speaking,Permanent Secretary of the Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Abraham Inyangudo, noted that the patient’s family has apologized, disowning Ms. Edet’s actions and expressing regret over what they termed an embarrassing and unnecessary exposure of their mother’s health condition.
Given the reputational damage caused, the Ministry disclosed that a formal complaint has been lodged with the Nigerian Police Force, while legal redress is being considered in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice. It also emphasized that under the National Health Act, healthcare providers reserve the right to decline treatment to abusive patients or relatives, except in psychiatric cases.
To further strengthen accountability, the Ministry of health has directed that within 72 hours, all health facilities in the state must display helplines of the Health Ombudsman and the Ministry of Health, to provide proper channels for lodging complaints.
In a Press release signed by Dr. Inyangudo, warned that hospitals must not be turned into stages for social media content, stressing that anyone who assaults healthcare workers or disrupts public peace will face prosecution.
A major highlight of the press briefing was the interactive session, during which journalists engaged the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board in a series of questions. The session provided an opportunity for clarification on key health sector issues and allowed the officials to give detailed explanations on government policies.
The press briefing, attended by journalists from both the print and broadcast media in the state, directors of the Ministry of Health, and directors of the Hospitals Management Board, concluded with a reaffirmation of the state government’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and quality healthcare delivery.
