HON. SANDY UMOETTE COMMENDS GOV. UMO ENO'S GRASSROOTS IMPACT

The Supporters' Circle radio programme recently featured the Special Assistant to the Governor on Grassroots Mobilization, Hon. Sandy Umoette, on Comfort 95.1 FM.

The programme focused on "Assessing Governor Umo Eno's Impact at the Grassroots" and was powered by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Support Groups.

In his goodwill message, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Support Groups, Pastor Samuel Edet, PhD, encouraged supporters to embrace continuous learning.

"A wise supporter is always a learner. Every rally, every meeting, and every activity is an opportunity to improve. Growth comes when we remain humble and open to learning," he said.

Speaking during the programme, Hon. Umoette congratulated Governor Umo Eno on emerging as the Most Outstanding Governor in the South-South Region at the Daily Times Nigeria Centenary Heroes Awards.

He described Governor Umo Eno's administration as people-centred, noting that its policies are designed to improve the welfare of the people and have made a significant impact across Akwa Ibom State.

Assessing the Governor's impact on communities, Hon. Umoette said residents at the grassroots were enjoying the dividends of democracy through various government programmes and interventions.

He further stated that the administration had revitalized primary healthcare services, making quality healthcare more accessible to ordinary citizens.

According to him, the state's bulk-purchase food distribution programme has continued to bring relief to many families, while the construction of access roads in rural communities has boosted economic activities.

He commended the prevailing peace and stability in the state, noting that the administration's Back-to-Farm initiative has positively impacted grassroots communities.

Hon. Umoette disclosed that his office plans to introduce a programme that will explain the ARISE Agenda in the Ibibio language to enhance understanding among grassroots communities. He added that the initiative would also create more opportunities for interaction between government and the people.

He further disclosed that his office has provided a brand-new caravan and grinding machine to a visually impaired trader at Eket Market, offered financial assistance to small business owners, and awarded scholarships to 15 students.

Hon. Umoette also said his office organized the Mega Easter Children Party 2026, which attracted about 3,000 participants. According to him, the event featured the distribution of 250 pairs of shoes, food, drinks, clothing, and other gifts to children and their parents, alongside recreational activities.

"The Governor did not make a mistake in appointing aides at the grassroots because he cannot be everywhere at the same time," he said.

He described the grassroots as the foundation of society, explaining that governance flows from the federal level to the state, local government, ward, polling unit, family, and ultimately the individual.

According to him, Governor Umo Eno's administration has adopted a bottom-up approach to governance, giving greater attention to grassroots development than in previous years.

Speaking on developments in Eket Local Government Area, Hon. Umoette said political stakeholders were working together to advance the ARISE Agenda.

He disclosed that during the APC membership e-registration and voter registration exercises, stakeholders collaborated with village heads, youth leaders, market association leaders, and other community stakeholders, contributing to Eket's rise from 18th to 2nd position in the State.

Hon. Umoette urged critics to refrain from what he described as attempts to tarnish the image of Governor Umo Eno's administration. Instead, he encouraged citizens to participate actively in the democratic process.

"Get ready. Get involved in the campaign and participate in the election. Don't sit back at home. Let your vote count," he advised.

Hon. Umoette also urged community leaders and residents to share useful and credible information with people at the grassroots, stressing that government information should reach its intended beneficiaries promptly.

CLEANLINESS AS A CIVIC CULTURE: Preserving a Legacy, Protecting Our Future

Reputation is not built in a day. It is earned through years of consistency, protected by collective effort, and sustained by an unwavering commitment to shared values. Yet, like every worthwhile achievement, it can easily be diminished by complacency.

For years, Akwa Ibom State has proudly worn the badge of Nigeria's cleanest state, a distinction earned through visionary leadership, deliberate environmental policies, and the cooperation of its citizens. It is an accomplishment that extends beyond trophies and accolades. It reflects our collective identity as a people who value order, public health, and the dignity of our shared spaces.

But every reputation comes with a responsibility. As our towns expand, commercial activities increase, and urbanization gathers pace, we are increasingly confronted with a challenge that demands our collective attention; the recurring incidence of flooding in many settlements, often worsened by drainage channels obstructed by indiscriminate waste disposal. It is a sobering reminder that environmental excellence is not a destination we have reached, but a standard we must continually uphold.

The true measure of our commitment to a clean Akwa Ibom, therefore, lies not just in the awards we have received, but in our determination to preserve the legacy that earned them. Government can provide leadership, formulate policies, strengthen agencies, and invest in environmental infrastructure. However, the success of these efforts ultimately depends on the daily choices made by citizens.

Environmental responsibility begins with the simple decisions we make every day; disposing of waste responsibly, protecting drainage channels from obstruction, maintaining clean surroundings, and encouraging others to do the same. These actions may appear insignificant in isolation, but collectively they shape the quality of life within our communities and define the future we leave behind.

As the office charged with engaging and mobilizing support groups across Akwa Ibom State, we recognize that grassroots organizations possess enormous capacity to inspire positive behavioural change. Beyond their role in supporting government programmes, support groups have a unique opportunity to serve as ambassadors of civic responsibility, encouraging environmental consciousness within their various communities and demonstrating that development is sustained not only by government initiatives but also by active citizen participation.

The environmental vision of His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, is not merely about maintaining a monthly sanitation exercise or preserving an enviable reputation. It is about nurturing a culture where cleanliness becomes second nature, where public spaces are treated with the same care as our homes, and where every citizen sees environmental stewardship as an expression of love for Akwa Ibom State.

The responsibility before us is therefore both collective and personal. Every clean street, every unclogged drainage channel, every properly managed waste bin, and every neighbourhood that embraces environmental responsibility contributes to a safer, healthier, and more resilient State.

As proud custodians of a legacy built over many years, let us resolve not only to celebrate Akwa Ibom's reputation as Nigeria's cleanest state but also to preserve it. In doing so, we will not only protect our environment from preventable challenges such as flooding, but also bequeath to future generations a State that remains a model of excellence, responsibility, and shared prosperity.

SANITATION IS A SPIRITUAL AFFAIR: HOW GOVERNOR UMO ENO'S CLEANLINESS AGENDA IS BUILDING A FLOOD RESILIENT AKWA IBOM

There is a popular saying that "Cleanliness is next to Godliness." To me, sanitation is more than an Environmental responsibility, it is a Spiritual Affairs. A clean heart often produces clean habits, and clean habits create clean homes, clean communities, and ultimately a healthier society.

This perspective comes to mind whenever I reflect on the Leadership of His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD. His Administration has consistently placed Cleanliness, order, and Environmental responsibility high on its Agenda. From the desilting of drainages and evacuation of refuse to the activation of relevant Government agencies ahead of the peak rainy season, the Governor has demonstrated that flood prevention begins with preparation rather than reaction.

While floods have affected many States across Nigeria, Akwa Ibom has benefited from proactive interventions aimed at reducing the impact of heavy rainfall. These efforts did not happen by chance; they are the result of deliberate planning and timely action.

The recent statewide sanitation exercise, which encouraged families, churches, businesses, and communities to clean their surroundings, further reinforced the message that Environmental cleanliness is everyone's responsibility. Government can provide Leadership and coordinate action, but lasting success depends on the cooperation of every citizen.

Blocked drainages, indiscriminate waste disposal, and poor building practices remain major causes of flooding. No Government can station officials in front of every drainage channel. This is why every resident has a duty to protect the environment by disposing of waste properly, keeping gutters free of debris, and complying with approved building standards.

I therefore call on all Support Group Heads, Support Groups, community leaders, faith-based organisations, youth groups, and residents of Akwa Ibom State to join hands with the Government in sustaining a culture of environmental cleanliness. When we keep our surroundings clean, we are not only preventing floods, we are protecting lives, property, public health, and the future of our children.

A cleaner Akwa Ibom is a safer Akwa Ibom. Flood prevention is not the responsibility of Government alone; it is a shared commitment that begins with each one of us.
