DEMOCRACY-DAY MESSAGE BY RT. HON. BARR. SUNDAY CYRIACUS UMEHA
Umunnem Ndi Ezeagu Na Udi,
I felicitate with us and Nigerians at large on the auspicious occasion of .
Today, we celebrate 26 years of an unbroken democratic journey - a testament to our growing international repute as Africa’s most robust democracy. It is a day that we commemorate the labours of our national heroes through whose sacrifices the government of the people, by the people and for the people, have cove to become a staple of our National life. Whilst we honour this historic feat, we also reflect on the outcomes of the experience of the past 26 years even as we project and anticipate the future that lie ahead with great sense of patriotism, determination and purpose.
Today’s event, aptly intersects with my midterm as your elected representative at the 10th National Assembly over the course of which period I have remained committed and unwavering in ensuring that the dividends of democracy cascade to every town, community and village across our Constituency within the limits of my capacity.
From improvement of our road infrastructure across various communities to the investment in the education of our youths through various scholarship schemes; from investment in the healthcare of women and children as well as the aged through numerous health outreaches to the improvement in our public utilities such as streetlights and transformers to lighten up our communities and other indeterminate social/humanitarian interventions through the Umeha Care and Empowerment Foundation, we have remained focused on delivering our Bold Legislative Agenda. Whilst we take pride in modest these efforts, we are hopeful and excited about the prospects of tomorrow.
My Dear Constituents, our democratic journey has not been without its challenges. Views remain sharply divided as to whether democracy, as a system of government, has delivered its promises to the Nigerian people. Today’s occasion is, however, not one to dwell much in such academic debates. Suffice to say that the challenges notwithstanding, we have made significant progress as a people and a Nation from where we were, 26 years ago, when this new banner of democracy was donned on the face of our Nation. In spite of our shared problems of nationhood, let us be optimistic that we shall emerge from them a truly united and formidable nation under God with a divine mandate to save the Black race.
It is in this wise, that I must use this opportunity to salute His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR – a man of great vision and conviction, a democrat extraordinaire for championing under the first two years of his presidency, the Bold Reforms upon which the success of tomorrow may come to rest, through the Renewed Hope Agenda. Under his masterful leadership, we have seen a decisive shift in governance – anchored on restoring trust, rebuilding institutions, and reigniting faith in the promise of Nigeria. It is altogether reassuring that these interventions are already yielding fruits at the macro level as corroborated by highly rated global financial and rating institutions such as the IMF, World Bank, etc.
From these early wins, we can draw hope that the dividends may soon begin to trickle in at the micro level where it’ll be felt in the dining tables of the Nation.
My Dear Constituents, as I conclude these remarks, I must not fail to remind us that Nation Building is not the exclusive preserve of elected representatives; it is rather, a collective effort of a people to enthrone and build a nation of shared aspiration. Thus, every Nigerian – young or old, male or female, rich or poor, has a role to play in shaping the future we aspire to.
May this renew and inspire us to this commitment as we continue to build a Nation that our forebears will be proud of.
God bless Ezeagu/Udi Federal Constituency
God bless State
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Signed:
Rt. Hon. Barr. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha
Member Representing Ezeagu/Udi Federal Constituency | Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Justice.
